UK Traveler 2 Adults 1 Teen

**Long review** Travelled from the UK with TUI to 2 Adults and one 13 year old boy. Having been back in the UK and having had time to reflect I wanted to leave an honest review to try and alleviate anyone’s concerns that has booked the Fives or is contemplating coming to the fives. We nearly changed our holiday based on some of the reviews. I'm not going to discount any of the negative reviews as they are people’s opinions or experiences. What I will do in this reviews is write our experiences and work arounds for some of the concerns raised in other reviews. Accommodation Having booked a 1 bedroom suite and put into Villa 4 we found the location to be perfect, between the Plaza and beach. The room itself was great, very spacious and perfect for what we wanted. The décor was a little tired, but didn’t really bother us as it met our expectation. We read many times about how the hot water worked, turning the tap the right and even we got it wrong, which the maintenance staff quickly resolved after a phone call to the reception. Check the tap is on the right way. The cleaning staff and fridge stocker were great. Restaurants We had read lots of reviews around not being able to get tables at the al a carte restaurant and the standard of the food. Our experience was that if you got there for 17:30-18:30 you could pretty much guarantee a table, on one occasion we went later for our evening meal, we ended up having to get a buzzer for the Thai restaurant, our teen was hungry, so while we waited just went and got him some chips and nuggets in a take away bag from Flavours and then sat in the plaza for a drink. Seated within 45 minutes. Not an unpleasant experience as we just had a drink whilst we waited. Food The standard of food was generally quite high. If you want bacon for breakfast at La Brasserie ask the staff and they will get you some. Our highlight was the Italian which was a great experience and food was exceptional. If you are all inclusive make sure you ask for glasses of house wine as bottles are chargeable. One thing to go and try was the goat’s cheese and corn soup from the La Brasserie at lunch, it was amazing. Our experience of Flavours wasn’t great, food was bland and dry, but was convenient if you didn’t want to wait for a table or wanted to get snacks whilst having drinks. The huts down by the beach are a great spot for lunch if you don’t want to got to any of the restaurants. Tacos at Humo Y Vino in The Plaza are amazing. You will not go hungry, there is pretty much food always available through the day. Humo Y Vino opens around 10:30 for hot snacks, which was great after all the drinks! Pools and beds If you turn up later in the morning you will still be able to get a bed but probably not where you want or enough for everyone in your group. If you are willing to put a shift and get down there for 08:30ish you will probably get a poolside bed together. Queues for the drinks are generally quite long circa 10-15 minutes, but if you don’t mind tipping you can get the amazing staff to bring them to you. The Bali beds, although quite expensive, are a great experience which will allow you to leave and come back throughout the day and for the price you get a bottle of plonk (Wine or Cava) and a cheese and meat platter along with constant service for extra drinks. The infinity pools were great and full of fun and people enjoying themselves. The pools at the back of the villas, although a lot quieter is a welcome respite from the high energy that can sometimes be seen at the infinity pools. Beach The beach is stunning but the seaweed scenario depends on the weather. The staff are pretty much on it and try to clear it up as quick as possible. Going in to the sea is a little more difficult as there are quite a few rocks and if it’s been windy, you cannot generally see where they are. The pier is great and an easy way to see the blue waters and fish if you don’t want to go for a swim. Staff The staff are amazing and will always go the extra mile to help. Tipping is very much appreciated by them. We left the following tips: Cleaner: 200 Pesos every other day, Fridge Stocker: 100 Pesos for re-filling with soft drinks and beer Breakfast: 100 Pesos Lunch in restaurant: 100 Pesos Lunch at snack bars: 50 Pesos Evening meal: 200-300 Pesos Drinks at the bar: 20 Pesos Drinks at table: 20-50 Pesos Evening Entertainment The main evening show was ok, didn’t really watch it. We enjoyed the live music played in The Plaza throughout the evening, very nice to chill to whilst drinking. It can be hard to get a seat in The Plaza, suggest getting one as soon as you finish your evening meals. All in all, such a beautiful place with amazing wildlife (Monkeys, Coatis and birds). An overall amazing holiday. Would definitely visit The Fives again.

Go somewhere else if you want service

I’m staying at this hotel right now and sadly I still have a couple of days left and my friends are arriving tomorrow. DO NOT COME HERE Save your money and spend it somewhere else . There is 0 customer services here , I waited over 30 mins with a crying baby who had a fever over 40 just to check in . They gave me an outdated room on the 3rd floor when I emailed ahead to request ground floor . The elevator is so small it barely fit our stroller . Our safe was broken so we cannot put anything in it and the toilet was making dripping sounds . I had a sick baby and had to wait over 3 hours for a crib and called over 7 times which I also emailed and requested a head of time . After a nightmarish first night I was moved to the ground floor , the washroom and shower had a window with no cover or curtain, people up stairs can literally look into your shower and bathroom mind you I have a young child . I asked front desk to get it covered up , I emailed , called and went to the front desk to no avail. No one at the front desk cares so don’t waste your time standing in line . The hotel is a joke , I regret asking my friends to come along , it’s expensive and not worth it , definitely not a five star ! The doctor here cost 200 usd to check a baby with fever and if you want a cabana or beach bed it’s an extra 150 or 200 usd a day . please save yourself the trouble go somewhere you feel welcomed and appreciated , your paying for it so don’t waste it here .

Not all inclusive, would swerve! Pay a little more to get an all inclusive elsewhere.

Sadly this hotel is not all inclusive. You can’t get into the a la carte restaurants and you can’t even get a front row sunbed on the beach! We’re big foodies and always pick a hotel with a la carte restaurants as we’re not fans of buffets. In 14 nights we only managed to eat in 6 a la carte restaurants (one visit in each). Sadly this was with a 2 hour plus wait each time as you can’t reserve any restaurant. When you have a 5 year old this isn’t easy. However, when you eventually get into the restaurants the food is delicious, especially the sushi, Italian and Thai. Our last night we couldn’t get into any of the restaurants at all, this may be due to 2 of them (sushi and French) being closed. I asked in the Thai why they were closed and she said the French was a prestige dinner and the sushi she didn’t know. So as a Paying guest in a hotel we couldn’t even eat!! I didn’t want to spend my last night eating in a buffet which to mention was bright and cold and gross!! I love an ice/coffee late afternoon but you can’t get one anywhere!! Unless you pay of course. Marley coffee is all chargeable and not included in AI. Same with the ice cream Shop. The Sorbets and nice ice cream is all chargeable. The free ice cream Flavours changes day to day. Another reason I’d not recommend or return is down to this hotel being a residence. I thought it was just the name of the hotel but no the hotel has residence who are their priority and VIP. They get all the treatment including making reservations for restaurants or walk in without waiting. You feel like a second class citizen even though we have paid so much money to visit. The pool/beach beds… if you want a front row beach seat, not happening unless you want to pay! I understood the Bali beds were chargeable (again, wrong in an all inclusive) however my family and I got normal plastic sunbeds at the front next to the Bali bed, we sat on them for an hour and then someone came and kicked us off to say these beds come with the Bali bed so unless we pay we can’t sit there. By this time all the beds around the beach and pool were gone so we were then bedless! Absolutely unacceptable! It’s the same at the main pool, most of the front pool area is taken over by Bali beds which all have to be paid for. The bar at the main bar opens at 10am which causes a huge line! Only one person serving at this tome so it takes a very long time to even get a drink. We travelled to this hotel for my husband’s 40th birthday, aunts 50th birthday and a big family holiday which some family have saved years for. In total there were 27 of us. They couldn’t even arrange one dinner for us all to sit together for my husband’s 40th birthday. The restaurants are more than big enough and we were happy to go at a time they suggested but nobody cared and didn’t want to help. This caused a lot of stress and upset as you can imagine however one of the lovely managers of Flavours (Diana) managed to arrange 2 tables for my Family and I to celebrate and I’m so grateful for that. Thank you Diana you’re the best. Most of the waiters in the restaurants were really unhappy and didn’t want to be there. There were only a handful I could praise. The burgers and pizzas are AMAZING and loved them! Another thing I really disliked was around the square you’re given the same plastic cups as the pool. How can I enjoy a nice glass of wine in a plastic cup? Not even shaped like a wine glass. Again I was seeing people with lovely martini glasses and wine glasses in the square. (These must be residents yet again being looked after more than a holiday maker) So many points that I could keep going on about but I’d be here forever. There are some good bits about this hotel. The grounds are lovely and well kept, monkeys and Possums to keep you entertained. I enjoyed the food (when you can get it) I wouldn’t recommend this hotel to anyone and I’d never return. You can spend extra on your holiday and find a hotel that really is all inclusive.

    Great stay!

Do not believe the bad reviews! This was a wonderful resort. I was worried after reading recent reviews before we turned up however this hotel was beautiful, surrounded by jungle and lots of wildlife. We have not ever been to a big resort like this before and tend to book smaller hotels so had different expectations to usual. With bringing a 17 year old with us, thought having a wide range of pools and areas and activities would be good for her and us. When we booked this hotel after The Fives being rewarded Travellers choice award we were excited to visit Mexico for the first time. In January 2024 I checked trip advisor and worried we had made a mistake due to recent 'bad' reviews. However, our experience was lovely. The food was incredible, the staff were so friendly and could not do enough for you. We took plenty of pesos with us as friends had visited Mexico before and advised of the tipping. As this resort is so big of course it is busy and there are lots of people especially in peak season in April but we did not find this to hinder our stay. If you are looking for something more exclusive you need to book a smaller resort or adults only as this may not be for you. We saw this as a positive due to the amount of options for lunch from the taco station and pizza station near the beach and the amount of restaurants to chose from for lunch and dinner. There was constant maintenance going on within the resort during our stay which I find a positive that they are making an effort to keep the hotel and grounds up to scratch. The only negative I would give is that there needs to be a better booking system for dinner service, in the day it was never really a problem getting a table but the evenings get so busy at the restaurants, I think they would benefit from having an app and a way you can book without having to go down to the restaurant as most waits were an hour. We didn't mind this as we visited the gin bar most nights before dinner so would grab a buzzer from the restaurant of that night and wait with a drink. There were quite a few events throughout our stay and they do sometimes section off parts of the beach but there are plenty of pools to chose from on these occasions. All in all we had a lovely stay and can not fault it.

    Not all inclusive!

The resort was nice, the room was beautiful but there are many things that are not all inclusive! The biggest thing that got me was the Marley coffee! When we booked, the booking included the Marley coffee. You actually have to pay for that. Certain flavors of icecream and Gelato you also have to pay for. So the whole trip we were left wondering and asking if we had to pay for things when we expected an ALL INCLUSIVE trip. The buffet is small so there was a line alot of the time unless you ate after 8 and the restaurants were nearly 2-3:hour waits. The resort reserves spots for the residents and the guests didn’t have to make a reservation but just show up. The resort didn't really have any shows! Well at least we didn't know about. Nothing was posted anywhere. There was music every night in the square which was nice but the kids didnt really like sitting around. The beach and pool areas had a lot of cabanas that took up most of the area, but again, you had to pay for those, 178$US. The next thing that really sucked was when we booked an excursions to Xel-ha which was a water park with zip lines, dolphins, cenotes. We were told at the resort that everything was included. It was not. First off, we payed almost 700$ just to go there, expecting all the activities were included. They are not. Dolphins were 200$ us for a family of 5, zip biking through the jungle was also 200$. Scuba helmets were about the same but a little more. So we decided to see what didn't cost money. We were able to snorkel but all their snorkel masks didn't work and you couldn't see the cool fish that were swimming around. The nice thing that was free was the lazy river. That was cool to just float through some cool looking vine things and just relax. Along the way there were 2 little cliffs to jump from and the food and drink was also included. Over all, I would not pay 123$ to go there again and I would not come back to this resort.
