    Tired old hotel that nickel and dimes you to death

    From the time I arrived to the time an employee arrived at the front desk to check in the non Elite guests was over an hour. One manager said it was beneath her to check people in (I understand from another employee this is a union thing and not nearly as rude as it sounds), another manager came by offering bottles of water as if that was somehow going to get my hour back. Lack of staff was the explanation. The room is tired and scuffed and smelled like cigarette smoke. The refrigerator looked like it had served a couple of decades as a dorm fridge. The water pressure in the shower was a trickle. Then there's the additional $30 resort fee per night which you can use to buy food or beverages in one of the three restaurants. You know how far $30 goes at the Sheraton? One tiny piece of cheesecake and two soft drinks. The final indignity was the $5 charge per bag to leave the bags on the day of departure. On the plus side, the local is good, the subway to/from LGA and JFK just steps away. Compared with our terrific stays last year at the Cloud One and the Hilton Garden Inn Times Square, this was a real dud.

    Could Use Some Updates

    I stayed at this Sheraton location while attending a conference in NYC. Bottom line: the high price for the rooms in this hotel are because of its location in the heart of Midtown. That’s one of the biggest draws of this hotel: easy walking distance to all of Broadway, Times Square, Rockefeller Center, Radio City Music Hall, and so many other iconic NYC landmarks. So most of the hotel clientele are tourists seeking those activities. Inside my room, the mattress could have stood to be replaced, as the spring were clearly giving out. The shower definitely could be re-grouted (years of stains), the tub drain didn’t fully seal (leaving it spraying and loud), and the toilet barely flushed. What I will say is that housekeeping came in daily to make the bed, refresh and towels, and tidy up. Overall, if you’re looking for a hotel right in the heart of the action of Manhattan and don’t mind paying exorbitantly for what you’re actually getting, give this midtown Sheraton a try.

    How badly can they disappoint in less than five hours?

    Currently at this property for several nights. Switched rooms because the first one had broken air conditioning and the second smelled like an ashtray. I then asked guest services for pillows and was given a hard time. Pillows cost the hotel literally nothing. At least the bell staff are pleasant and helpful. Stay literally anywhere else.

    Poor but better than feared

    We arrived with trepidation having read other reviews and, perhaps because our expectations were so low, we were pleasantly surprised that it wasn’t as bad as we feared. However, it is far from perfect. Good things: Location Bed was comfortable (though the frame looked like it had seen better days and could collapse at any time) Room was just about clean enough Staff were friendly Fitness center is well equipped Poor things: The decor is very old. Some people we were travelling with said it hasn’t changed since they were last there over 20 years ago. Beyond decor, the whole place need a lot of TLC and revamp. Lots of peeling paint. The curtains were half hanging off. The blinds were clunky. The ridiculous $30 per night pre-charge for extras is a rip off as it forces you to buy something at their over-inflated prices ($30 gets you 2 beers in the bar). The housekeeping staff left a bag of towels blocking the fire escape opposite our room. I moved it to the side and informed reception, who said they would get it moved immediately. 24 hours later it was still there. 36 hours later another bag had joined it and was blocking the fire escape again. So I dragged them up the corridor and left them prominently by the lift. That did the trick and by the following morning they were gone, so clearly the hotel cares about public image more than public safety. Very noisy outside even on 17th floor. The sound insulation is poor. Overall this hotel trades on its brand name and location. It is poor value for money and I’m sure there are better alternatives nearby.

    Decent experience

    I was supposed to be in NYC for a work meeting, but I extended the trip and brought my family. I stood in the Bonvoy Elite line for twice as long as the regular line - hopped out and switched lines when I realized the situation. The room was acceptable, but my 9yo, who is weirdly used to nice hotel rooms due to my Marriott status, walked in and said, "This room is sooo small!" I think it was fine for NYC standards and the view was nice toward Central Park. The blinds chain didn't work properly and the toilet was running constantly due to a broken flapper. No fridge in the room. It was impossible to get breakfast in the hotel with my "free breakfast" on Sunday as the line was over an hour long. No lounge for Bonvoy Elite members. No bell service. They charged to hold our luggage on the day of check out! The building has an efficient elevator system.
