Last minute trip
We usually do a fair amount of research before booking any trip. We were planning to go to FL 9/24-10/1 but those plans were derailed by Hurricane Ian. We booked this replacement trip on 9/23 for departure 9/25. Therefore we didn't really research the way we usually do. We traveled as 2 adults and 1 child (3yo). Arrival was status quo, took a while to check in but our room was ready. Bellman available to take luggage quickly. There are no elevators at this resort so be prepared for stairs. Our room was excellent. No complaints. We were in building #25. We had a family suite which was a king bed and a bunk bed with a partition between. TVs in both areas. Certainly not sound or light proof but it was a nice separation. Everything was clean and in working order. Minimal plugs, might want to bring a power strip if you have lots of things to plug in. Shower only in the bathroom, no tub. Balcony was nice, overlooking the pool. I'd say the only things lacking were a small table/chairs in the room (we just used the balcony table), a microwave would have been great and a larger minifridge. The pools were clean and big and warm. No complaints again. Plenty of chairs as it was low season. Sometimes had to hunt for clean towels at the pool near our room. Water park was fun. Lots of slides for little kids and adults. Lots of lifeguards on duty. Staff was excellent, friendly and kind. Most spoke excellent english which was a bonus since we speak VERY minimal spanish. The beach was nice. Definitely had some erosion from Hurricane Fiona but the sand was soft and water warm. The vendors actually took no, thank you for an answer which was a first for us in the DR or Mexico. No, I am not interested in a $15 photo with your monkey. Now to the bad.... The food is horrible. Not all the restaurants and buffets are open during all meals, so make sure you check before arriving at your desired place. We mostly stuck to the buffets. We did a sit down lunch at the italian restaurant and it took over 1.5 hours to get our very basic food. Buffets are only open during certain hours. This posed a challenge for us due to having a child with us who is used to eating on the earlier side. Lunch opens only at 1230 and dinner at 6. The food was very meh. They did omelets in the morning which were good. Otherwise, plan to maintain or lose weight, haha. Room service is 24 hours and not any better. Long wait times despite ordering ahead for a scheduled time. On our last full day, we ordered lunch for 1145 and did not receive it until 115. Drinks were decent at all the bars. My husband enjoyed the martinis at the Martini Mix at the Royalton. This is a very large property. Plan to do a lot of walking or a lot of waiting for the trolley. Remember to plug your nose as you drive from Splash to Royalton as there is a definite sewage problem in that area. Kids club was OK. Not good, not bad. Playground was nice. Indoor area could be better kept up. My daughter loved the Mickey bounce house they had out on Friday. Staff excellent - especially down at their beach station. My daughter was able to play with the giant Connect 4, the "playground" and had some fun painting coconuts and getting her face painted. Checkout was simple. A quite week as it was low season. They do have some sort of locals special and the place got pretty busy come Friday afternoon/Saturday morning. Overall we had a good time, but the food was a real deal breaker for us. Feel free to PM me with any questions.
Would never again
I’ve stayed at 3 star resorts in Mexico that was better than this. We are here currently and it’s been a horrible experience! The beach is great but everything else is sub par. I’m stuck here without anymore cash because the atm has been broken for days now. The rooms have been decent although the cleaning service has forgot the odd thing like restocking items here and there but that’s not a big deal. The food has been horrible, hard pancakes and such. We often have to get up to get water from the servers, plates have piled up on our tables. We are from Canada and I have been a hospitality manager at ski resorts and high end hotels… this is shameful! When we got here we were told we could eat at the sister resort and a number of times we’ve been turned away and then we go where we were told we could eat only to be turned away there too. My suggestion is the gm get his staffed better versed in their resort policies. This resort puts shame to the royalton name.
I have gone on many vacations and can honestly say I’ve stayed at nicer 3 stars. They took advantage of us with prices of taxis, beach vendors and excursions. The rooms themselves are a 4 star, the beach is beautiful I’d say 4.5 stars for the beach. The food was horrible!!! Hard French toast and pancakes to the point you could smack it on the table. Burger Pattie’s were good tasting but you would need 3-4 to fill out the size of a bun. The food was bland and cheap. The staff were all great. The atm was broken and every time I asked when it would be fixed no one had an answer for me so we were stuck without money. I wouldn’t have booked this trip if I had foreseen what it would be like. The excursion we paid for was horrible.. the “grotto” we booked was a man made hole in a market that they ship you off to and surround you with vendors to over charge you on beaded bracelets, they tell you it’s to pay for the village but based on the prices and the amount of ppl we were there with, they should have a school built and nice houses because without counting in the money spent on vendors the tour had made around 10,000$ US doing simple math based on what we paid. I was throwing food to the children as we drove by. All around a disappointing vacation and I wouldn’t suggest anyone go for the money spent.
