Cold Staff, Unwelcoming Stay — Not What I Expected in Hawaii
From the moment we arrived, the front desk staff set the tone—and it wasn’t a good one. The woman who checked us in didn’t greet us warmly, didn’t smile once, and looked absolutely miserable to be there. She handed us a map and highlighted where we are staying. When I asked if she could recommend a beach and highlight it, she mentions a beach and she literally dropped the highlighter in front of me and clearly expected me to figure it out myself. Throughout our one-day stay, we had multiple interactions with different front desk staff, and *none* of them were friendly or helpful. It was genuinely uncomfortable. The one saving grace was the kind older gentleman by the pool who handled the towels—he was the only person who made us feel welcome and showed any sense of hospitality. Honestly, if it weren’t for him, we would’ve left early. Hawaii is known for its warm and friendly spirit, but this resort didn’t live up to that at all. I expected better.

Relaxing stay at the Royal Kona
We had a wonderful relaxing stay at the Royal Kona. While it is an older hotel, it is clean and the staff were very friendly and accommodating. Jamalia and Jenny in the restaurant for breakfast were great and provided excellent service. Next time we come to Kona, we will be staying here.

Royal Kona Oceanfront Room - Magical!
My husband and I just spent the last two nights of a two-week trip to the Big Island at the Royal Kona. We had an oceanfront King room on the top (6th) floor in the Ali’i Tower and it was magical. We had no neighbors on either side of us, making our balcony space especially private. We never heard any noise from renovations and the sound of the waves directly below us lulled us to sleep. I have never stayed in a hotel room so close to the ocean; the view and sunsets were amazing. All staff were warm, welcoming and helpful. The hotel’s Don the Beachcomber bar is a happening spot at happy hour, where we enjoyed our complimentary mai tai’s and chatting with other guests. We recommend Island Lava Java, just a short walk down the road, at which we had an excellent breakfast one morning. Don’t hesitate to book a stay at the Royal Kona.

Great vacation stay
This resort is a little old, but definitely not run down and full of nostalgia. Our room was clean and comfortable with breathtaking views. They are working to update the facility, but that never interfered with any part of our stay. The onsite bar and grill was great and right on the ocean where the sunsets were phenomenal. Everyone at the resort was so courteous and helpful, we always felt welcome and appreciated. The Luau onsite was also wonderful with great food, never ending drinks and superb performances. The resort is just a short walk to the Kona village with plenty of shopping and local restaurants. I would highly recommend this resort and will stay there again when we return.

Great Resort with Exceptional Staff
Great resort with exceptional Staff! I woke up on our travel day back to the mainland with an epic migraine and had to reschedule travel for next day. I called the resort and they let us check in early. The resort was built in late 1960s, is very charming and nicely updated. Great location in the heart of Kailua. Unit was very clean with comfy bed, great pillows and beautiful view. Huggos on the Rocks next door is one of our favorite places!
