    TRIFLING

THIS PLACE IS TRIFLING! It has a terrible pissy, moldy smell. The lobby and parties are ok, the food is NASTY! Th drinks were ok. The ceiling fan doesn’t go off.. it’s freezing in my room, but if I turn it off the floor becomes wet with condensation. The bed was damp from the condensation as well. I changed my room three times…. Bc it was NASTY! AVOID AT ALL COST! I hope I reach someone and go elsewhere!

Disappointed by Riu Republica – Not Worth the 5-Star Rating

I’ve stayed at other Riu hotels before and have always been impressed, so I had high expectations for Riu Republica. Unfortunately, this property fell short in several key areas, and I would not recommend it. To start, the key cards deactivated themselves five times during our stay. On two occasions, this happened after a long day out, forcing us to trek all the way back to reception to get them reprogrammed — not exactly what you want when you’re exhausted and just hoping to relax. The elevators were another major issue. They frequently broke down, and on one occasion, I was actually stuck inside one. It was a frightening experience made worse by the slow response from staff. As for the rooms, they were underwhelming. While functional, they were not up to 5-star standards — worn down, with visible stains and poor maintenance. We ended up requesting a room change due to the condition, and it appeared we weren’t the only ones. There was even a dedicated line for guests requesting new rooms, which says a lot. The food was one of the few positives — tasty and varied — but the quality was inconsistent. Some meals were excellent, others felt rushed or poorly prepared. Service was hit-or-miss. A few staff members were friendly and professional, but others came across as indifferent or even rude, which impacted the overall atmosphere. In summary, while we enjoyed our time in the Dominican Republic, Riu Republica did not meet expectations. We will definitely return to the country, but not to this resort — and we wouldn’t recommend it to others.

It was good just had an issue with little white bugs and roaches. I think it needs to be more top shelf alcohol

Far from 5-Star – Would Not Stay Again

I stayed at the Riu in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic from May 30 to June 14, and unfortunately, the experience was far below expectations. I’m honestly shocked that this is rated as a five-star hotel—it did not reflect five-star standards in cleanliness, maintenance, food quality, or overall service. Cons: There were multiple issues during my stay that seriously impacted my comfort and enjoyment. One night, I was served sour rice at dinner—it had clearly gone off and I had to spit it out. The Sports Bar food was awful, with dry, overcooked burgers and rock-hard nachos. Much of the buffet food seemed to be reheated or recycled, and dinner was almost always cold. On top of that, the cups used for drinks were often not properly cleaned and had a strange smell. I had no hot water on two days and was forced to take cold showers. My room was dirty when I arrived, with a rusty shower and dusty surfaces—I had to wipe down the desk and bedside tables myself. The fridge was broken and extremely noisy, and despite reporting it several times, no one fixed it. There were also leaks coming from the walls. Worse still, I saw human feces in the corridor one day—completely unacceptable. The maid knocked on my door asking for a tip, even though she didn’t change the pillowcases or sheets when I requested it. Getting a pool towel was nearly impossible, and when I finally did, it smelled musty and needed to be returned. The beach area directly in front of the hotel was full of plastic waste and even chicken bones—clearly neglected and not properly cleaned. Pros: There were a few redeeming points. The pools are nice and there’s a good variety of them. The buffet and bar staff were consistently friendly and helpful, and the entertainment staff work incredibly hard and bring good energy to the resort. The steakhouse and Chinese restaurants (reservation-only) had decent food and were a step up from the buffet. Overall: I’m truly disappointed and still can’t believe this place is marketed as a five-star resort. While some of the staff were genuinely kind and hardworking, the overall quality, hygiene, and upkeep of this hotel were unacceptable. I would not stay at this Riu again and this experience has made me hesitant to trust the Riu brand at other locations. I love the Dominican Republic and would definitely return—but not to this hotel.

    Average Resort. Above Average Vibes!

This is not the best or the worst resort I have been to. It is pretty average. I am giving it 4/5 just because I had a great time with my group on my vacation. The rooms and elevators could definitely benefit from some TLC. However, the common areas and property grounds are in decent shape. The staff are not trained in hospitality but they are nice to you if you are nice to them. My suite was pretty good but I saw a few double occupancy rooms that I would have been very dissatisfied with. Be sure to manage your expectations. If you are looking for 5-star property and treatment then this is NOT the resort for you. If you want decent food and an excellent, upbeat atmosphere, then this is the resort for you! If you are particular about room accommodations or expect rock star treatment from the staff then you should probably go somewhere else. This is a fun/good time resort. Leave your attitude and bad travel companions at home and you will have a great time! Go with a fun group of people, respect the staff, and use your room for sleeping and showering. Do these things and you will have an excellent time (unless you are just miserable in general). The jerk chicken at the beach is amazing! PRO TIP - stop at the duty free shop in the airport if you want a particular brand of alcohol. The resort has unlimited WELL liquors but nothing "top shelf". A regular bottle of "top shelf" liquor is $100+ dollars at the gift shop on property. The white wine on property is decent.
