Birthday Celebration!
My boyfriend and I traveled to RIU for his birthday. We had an awesome time. The staff in the buffet area showed us so much hospitality. They even set up a nice decorated table for his birthday and provided a cake. Such a nice experience. We’d definitely stay again. Thanks RIU Republica :)

Horrible
Upon checking in, there was no AC in our room. The walls was damaged. The bathroom had rusty faucets and the water pressure was very very low. The temperature of the water was lukewarm the shower was dirty. The sink did not drain. The elevators did not work on the 4000 side And this was the luxury ocean view room. The electricity went out on our side of the hotel twice The food was disgusting. We couldn’t even enjoy ourselves. Because it was so hott… We was drinking and by the time we got to the room we was sober. The only positive thing about the hotel was the pink party and that’s because we had a travel to the main RIU hotel. That was the only thing positive.. I would not recommend anybody to stay at that hotel: RIU Republic: the worst of the worst…

Resort is overwhelmed by loud music and partiers
Preamble ========= 1) This is absolutely not a 5 star, which we knew coming in, nonetheless I hope Riu will be more honest about this. It’s a 4 star at best (and barely during spring break) 2) This is a party resort (25 and under type parties) which we did not know at booking, shame on us. If you want to re-live your college years, by all means, otherwise you will not get much peace and quiet here. We came in early March and met the college spring break mob (The Mob) head on. They are loud, obnoxious, rude and show little respect for other guests. The only quiet period is 5-10am and that’s when the sprinklers run, staff are frantically cleaning the mess The Mob left the previous day. So not totally relaxing. The resort caters to The Mob, loud music all day in all areas of the resort, leaving little space to relax. So if you are not in The Mob, you are a second class citizen here. The good ========= Food choice and quality is decent - lots of options. Not amazing, but decent. Many themed restaurants. Most require no reservations and are simply buffet style with themed twists. The grounds are very nice and well kept despite The Mob who throw garbage all over. The resort is quite large, if you’re towards the back, plan to get your steps in to go back and forth to the beach. The beach is also beautiful, lots of shade in the palms, and plenty of (well worn) lounge chairs. The grounds and the beach you’ll likely get at most resorts in Punta Cana so I don’t afford this Riu anything special here The neural ========== Some staff are nice, friendly and work hard (~15-20% of them). The rest seem some level of disinterested, lazy or just dislike their jobs. Possibly due to The Mob who I’m sure are not great tippers nor fun to serve. Entertainment is ok, not nearly as good as Riu Negril which we went to last year. They had a lot of duets singing starting around 830, then usually a themed show at 930. Not a high budget production, think local community college level (sound like a 5* yet?). Maybe all the budget goes to booze here. Drinks- borderline ok. Beer is standard el presidente, you can get some name brand liquors if you ask but most are unknown watered down brands (I know, screams 5* right?!). Some staff put effort into making the drinks right, others don’t really listen and mix at will. Ordering in Spanish seemed to have a bit more success. There is liquor in the rooms. I stopped drinking it once I noticed that there seemed to be food colouring in the scotch, it was unusually dark when I put some in the glass and then when I poured that down the sink there was an odd separation where some black residue came out of the main liquid. Maybe they mix in water then food colouring to keep it from looking too light. The rooms are a decent size with nice balconies. If you get one facing towards the outside of the resort you may have more luck with noise. That said everything in the room feels warn out. The couch, the bed, the noisy fridge, the bathroom (with its rusty shower), rough old towels, the safe which hardly worked, etc, etc. barely a neural. The bad ======== There is non-stop noise in the resort from 10am to 4-5am as people stumble back to their rooms yelling and banging on random doors. The Mob rules here and the resort supports that with non-stop party music and booze. If you must come here and don’t intend to party, bring top quality earplugs. The furniture and state of parts of the facility feel really worn, like they have had too much Mob. The beach and pool chairs are very old and dirty looking. The rooms as mentioned need a big freshening up and the style feels like a Miami Vice episode, but like the one where Crocket finds drunks barfing all over. Again not a 5* Water bottles are tough to come by. They aren’t refilled frequently enough nor are enough left. You cannot drink the tap water in the rooms. It’s very sunny and hot here, we need water! (Not a 5* as mentioned!) Generally note to management: ============================== 1) be honest up front about the state of the resort and the Mob issues 2) Keep the front 2/3rds of the resort as the loud area and leave the back 1/3 as quieter so non Mobsters can have somewhere to relax and not feel threatened by the Mob 3) Require Midnight to 9am to be quiet time in the rooms sections of the resort and have sufficient security do rounds to enforce this. People don't need to hear yelling, screaming and music from their rooms all night.

Great Sta
Rosie at the buffet was 100/10. Entertainment was always wonderful, Staff were lovely, desti at the front desk is amazing. We had such a good trip. The music could cater a little more to English speaking guest though.

Mediocre except when wanting tips
Upon arrival, there are queues at reception, quite lengthy ones. The receptionist gives you the very basic information but not much else after all....they have to serve all the people waiting behind you. Big room but sofa etc all covered in sticky plasticky plastic! The king bed was comfy enough, the wifi worked well, the air-conditioning was good, fridge was cool and the cheap spirits in the room were like some sort of tacky add-on for people to talk about. Drinks were not filled up daily, instead one had to phone and ask for the drinks to be replaced. Bathroom was adequate but again, the washing liquid was not filled up unless one asked. Towels looked like they were years old and been put through a washing process one thousand times. Corridors dark and damp. The lifts sometimes worked. The grounds look beautiful during the day, but first thing in the morning were strewn with empty beer cans, bottles, cigarette butts etc. The staff seemed to have a hard time keeping up with cleaning; although in all fairness if guests were more respectful it wouldn't be like that. Ate at the buffet restaurant. Plenty choice if you like food that sits underneath a light bulb to keep it warm. The food was edible but can't really say more than that. The coffee machine was broken and not fixed whilst I was there. Even the fruit juice machine was in a sorry state. Biggest bugbear were the waiters. Continually seeking out tips. The Indian restaurant was full of men wearing English football tops which just about says it all. Food edible and maybe up to the standard of a cheap takeaway in the UK but not much better. The staff behind the Macao bar were excellent. Happy, obliging and prompt. However the staff at the bar at the rear of the hotel presumably consisted of Mr. Grumpy and his relatives. Sour-faced unless getting tipped. However the waitresses were great. Happy to receive a tip but not in your face seeking one. In the evenings there is entertainment, some fairly good some not so. At the rear stage they had karaoke which presumably means low cost for the hotel as the guests are doing their own entertainment! The pools are OK, the beach is nice. The hotel shop is expensive but what was expected......given that the resort purports to be 5 star. I say purports because it is anything but. I got the impression that it is a tacky, run down, party hotel full of American college kids who can't handle their alcohol, staff who don't care unless getting heavily tipped. Many USA guests, a lot of Canadians, some Brits and others from Central/South America. Would I return? That's a no.
