Good time not a great time
We are currently here. A family of 5; kids are 13, 9 and 5. We only got here yesterday and I never end up writing a review when I get home so I wanted to just give my opinion. Now keep in mind everyone's standards are different and what makes a great vacation for me may be different for you. I've stayed at well over a dozen all inclusive resorts and I guess this one is making me realize what I do want...because it's not here. #1 most of the staff don't seem very happy. So I can only assume it's a management issue but unless they are working you for a tip not too many smiling faces or warm welcomes. They do not serve you in order at the bar, I've been looked right through like I'm invisible multiple times and so far I've seen no poolside or beach service. For a 5 star resort that would be nice. #2 I think the pools kinda suck. I love Mexico for their winding connecting pools with fountains, jets or those shower sprays. This resort has a bunch of basic pools with super strict life guards. I think they rely on the waterpark for the kids which is so off to the side and not even like the kids area is attached to a nice big family pool. #3 the ease of getting food. I've got children and would love to have my quick options and more of them. The buffet is huge and great but always packed and since we need a 5 top we need to sit 300 feet away. We've gone to the sports bar and they had gross snacks that were cold, and all picked over. Pepe's was alright but we waited 30 mins for a burger....again I have 3 kids that's not fun. So long story short I wish I could just grab some fries and grilled cheese a little easier. I wish the staff would be more pleasant and helpful considering they are working at bar and I'm just asking for 2 drinks. And it would be awesome if the pools were a bit more lively or the grounds had more for the kids like a playground or lawn bowling, horseshoes, chess. I could be way off but most people seem to be content just chilling in the lobby with a coffee but this is a lot more boring then many other resorts we've been too. The pros so far is the beach is awesome, lots of loungers and super close to walk to. The grounds are beautifully maintained but omg be careful the tiles are sooo slippery...no wonder there are so many pylons to walk around. The drinks are tasty and well made, the food overall is decent, the room is recently updated, clean and the minibar is great. Overall it's not bad at all but for the money we've paid to be here.... I'm wishing we would have done more research. You won't have a bad time here but it's not 5 star and depending on what your looking for maybe keep looking.

A pleasant enough stay, but not 5* Star
Just returned from a 7 night stay at the Riu Ocho Rios. I have gone with an average rating of this resort as it was neither the best nor the worst that I have stayed in. The resort is large with plenty of amenities. There are a number of different pools including swim up bars and the hotel owns a lovely stretch of beach that is kept clean and has a plentiful supply of sun loungers. If you want a drink or something to eat on the beach, you have to go and get it yourself, which was a con for me as for a five star resort I would have hoped to be able to get beach side service. The staff for the most part, are lovely and know their craft, everything runs like a well oiled machine, from room services to buffet and restaurants. The only negative encounter with staff was when we first arrived ( which was a shame as the first impression was then negative). When you arrive you are offered a fruit punch; either strawberry or tropical. I asked the lady serving them wether or not they contained alcohol as I had my 4 year old with me and wanted to know if I could offer her the drink and the lady just looked in my face and shouted “red one is fruit and blue is tropical” as if I was deaf and had not heard her the first time, and then just walked off, without answering the question. It was so rude. However, other than her, every other member of the team we encountered was lovely, aside from some chefs who pretended they didn’t hear you when saying the food was cold! The rooms are spacious, look recently refurbished and nice and clean, although I did have marked/unclean sheets put on the bed on one occasion but it was rectified quickly when I raised it. The mini bar is complimentary and is well stocked with soft drinks, water, rums and tonics. The main restaurant, St Ann, serves a buffet for breakfast, lunch and dinner and then there are a number of bookable restaurants of various cuisines. One annoying thing about booking the restaurants is that you can only book for your room and only via the App, so if you’re in a group, each room has to book separately and then tell them you want to sit together. I don’t really understand why as it’s just unnecessarily complicated to coordinate all the rooms together. The food at the buffet was only ever lukewarm at best and at times, it was stone cold. The chefs didn’t seem bothered when you told them the food was cold, literally they shrugged their shoulders. You can see that they prepare and set it up long before they open for the food sittings and even with the hot lamps, the food is not warm by time service opens. Whilst they do try to add some variety day by day, by the end of the trip it does all start to feel a bit samey. The quality wasn’t always the best and at times we found cutlery and plates that were dirty which was off putting. We also tried the steak restaurant and the italian. At the steak house they ask you how you want your steak but it doesn’t really matter what you say as you only end up with a well done steak. Our party asked for various different levels of cooked but they all came well done. It was very chewy and dry, not nice at all. The Italian was even worse, every dish was just laced with salt to the extent that it was inedible. We stuck to the buffet after these 2 disappointing experiences with the restaurants. The drinks selection and service is great. They are generous with the alcohol measures! The Bob Marley ( a red, yellow and green rum slushy) was my drink highlight, I drunk gallons! There’s lots for kids, a splash pool with slides, a soft play area and kids club. The evening entertainment was also fun and lively, including the White Party hosted on the weekend. All in all, a nice resort but I wouldn’t say it is five star worthy. I will probably try another resort on my next visit as Riu is not a ‘must return’ in my view.

Definitely not 4/5* hotel. Will not recommend to anyone.
After previously staying twice in the Riu Tropical Palace Negril we had high expectations as the hotel in Ocho Rios is advertised as 4/5*.We were very disappointed from the start. Check in was lacking in welcome, no porter available. Initially the room appeared ok but not 4/5*, after a couple of days there was a musty smell and clothes felt damp. On closer inspection it was shabby. Food in the buffet was poor, often cold, very repetitive, it felt like a school refectory. A la carte is seriously underwhelming, in the Italian restaurant the food was actually worse than the buffet. Staff were often surly and rude, although a few were very pleasant and helpful. Cleaning staff were very good. The hotel was very busy, noisy and bustling more like an airport or train station. No where to escape to a quiet peaceful space. The beach was ok but sunbeds often in poor condition, no nice long tranquil walk along the beach. Check out was poor, again no pleasantries. I will not be recommending this hotel to anyone.

Great spot!
What a beautiful resort with lots to do. It was a long drive but worth it. We found out you could take a private transport so did that on the way back. Lots of food options, even for those that are plant based. Had a great time and would highly recommend this resort.
