I love Riu!
I’ve been living in Jamaica off and on for 12 years, and had never stayed at an all inclusive. This was amazing. They are doing a great job with Covid protocols, the staff was great, amazing room/porch view, awesome pools. I couldn’t have hoped for more in a hotel. I got a free covid test here and the nurse was fantastic. This place changed my view of all inclusive resorts, and the staff seemed genuinely happy at their workplace. Even though I initially booked this hotel due to the discount (because of covid) and it’s proximity to the airport, I was blown away with the service, facilities, and room.
I don’t normally leave reviews but i feel my experience should be shared. I felt completely misled when i booked..Riu you should update that covid changed a few things on your amenities section. Hotel itself is very lovely and clean. Staff is friendly! The entertainment crew top notch! Rollie pollie, chocolate and shampoo killed it! Waiters were great Micheal and Darren greeted us with our drinks every meal. Due to covid the cooks i guess have to serve you and are so miserable/rude that it’s uncomfortable. They give you hardly any food and then give you an attitude that you ask for a 3rd mussel. Food was just ok. Pepe was the best wish they were open for dinner. There is NO 24/7 room service, liquor in room is empty as well as mini fridge. Only thing they offer is to go to the sports bar for premade cheese sandwiches and on occasion beef patties and if you want to get water soda or beer to stick in ur fridge (i get it’s covid) We spoke with other guests who were just as unhappy sharing the same experiences. Another issue..is being told by the staff to tip them and how much they should get, very rude and unprofessional. Tips are a courtesy. The beach is nice but the seaweed attached to the floor very unpleasant. The nonstop harassment by the people on paddle boards asking you to buy their stuff caused us to stop going into the ocean. Also make sure you pack everything you need bc the giftshop is so over priced $18 for bug spray $5 for 1 mini bag of chips. Robbery. Loved Jamaica will return but not to the Riu. Nor staying at any Riu after this experience.
Worst resort I've visited
This is one of the worst experience I had at a resort. From the 1st day we checked in, there was no welcoming atmosphere. No one really greeted you and their face were all screwed up like you were bothering them. When we got to the room, there was a very strong mold scent that never went away for our entire stay. The thermostat was locked and we couldn't access it, so at times it would be extremely cold especially at night and if we turned it off it would be very hot. At least we had a decent view from our room. The swim up bar was really fun, the drinks were amazing. The drinks were the best part for me. As for the food, that was my worst part. The food choices and the food itself was terrible, bland, cold sometimes and hardly any Jamaican choices. The 1st time I had breakfast it was cold which was such a turn off. For dinner time they only had 2 choices, a restaurant you can dine in and a buffet. Food was just not flavorful. The jerk chicken spot definitely didn't taste like real jerk chicken, jerk chicken from NY taste much better. For my entire stay the staff was not polite, they did not greet you. They passed by and didn't say hello. They boldly asked for tips after rendering a service which I thought was so distasteful. I will never return to this resort, we could have done so much better and had a much better experience.
Tour guide Sasha was very rude and unprofessional
When I got to Jamaica airport I was introduced to Lynn who was very sweet and professional. When I got to RIU I was told that Sasha would be my person to go to if I had any questions or needed anything. Sachs tried to sell me tours around the island which I declined. When I declined the tours Sasha then walked away and became very rude. The alcohol was watered down, I was expecting authentic Jamaican food but instead I got American food which was not good.
Just my experience
First, the obvious: Good location, close to Sangster airport, updated property. I highly recommend downloading their app before you show up there. The bad: I am not a nitpicking type, however the food options and buffet server manners really need to be discussed by the mid management. Riu has several restaurants. Asian, Italian, a steakhouse, a culinary, poolside grill and of course a buffet. I’ve only visited the buffet and the steakhouse restaurants. Steakhouse claims that they offer a ribeye steak among other items. By far it was the most tasteless ribeye I’ve ever had. I didn’t think it actually was a ribeye. I questioned some other visitors and they agreed on that. Buffet is a whole another story. RIU really needs to upgrade their food vendors. As only P of food was tasty. Let me elaborate on server manners at the buffet. Pre Covid times we could pick our food from trays as much as we wanted. But after Covid, patrons can not serve themselves and have to ask the servers who stand by the food trays. They are STINGY. As if they were told to give one slice of tomato at a time. I had to ask 4 times to get 4 thin slices of tomato. One slice at a time. Also most wouldn’t even crack a smile while asking for food. Now this is true only for buffet servers that stand by the trays NOT table servers. The table servers were excellent. Great at their jobs, making us feel welcomed and very fast. They were on point bringing drinks and refills. I would also point out if you forgot to bring sun protection, get ready to pay $34 US. I understand all hotels charge more than outside vendors but that is a scam. A bottle of sunscreen for 34 US dollars? I won’t say it here, but if you need something like that, you could get it 1/3 of that price. Look around. Another thing that was weird to me was we couldn’t visit RIU Palace(literally next door) yet if you stay at Palace, you could visit Riu Montego Bay. A big advertisement loss on Riu for a minimal or no monetary consequence. The good: Hotel property is extremely clean, and well kept. Rooms are clean and housekeeping on point. We never had to wait for housekeeping. Also the App has requests option. We had a small issue in our room, I requested maintenance through the app around 7pm and a very polite employee showed up in less than 10 minutes and took care of our problem. The best: Entertainment crew. Amazing people. Especially the two lead ladies. They passed every single vibe check. Male entertainers were also great. But I have to say lady chocolate and rollie pollie were the best. As far as entertainment, we saw an amazing dance show, a good reggae band, and karaoke night was awesome. Entertainment crew never stopped working and were attentive to every single customer. Good job employing these ladies and gentlemen RIU. Final thought: One last thing. Although this is an adult only property, a lot of 20 and 30 year old children. So don’t expect a quiet stay especially around pools.
