Good family resort
Riu Dunamar is a family resort just north of Cancun in Costa Mujeres. There are 5 pools, with two swim up bars and a dedicated large water slide pool. There are plenty of adjustable awnings to provide shade around the pools, and the beach is clean with rows of palm trees providing good shade. Unlike most areas in Cancun, seaweed is minimal and you can really enjoy the water. The resort is very clean, the food is decent, but not spectacular. Evening shows are good but finish at ~9:30, and due to COVID, the nightclub is closed.
Very Nice Hotel
We really enjoyed our stay at this hotel. At first we were not sure about the location. However, once we figured out how to get to Indian Rocks, Indian Shores, Madeira Beach, St. Pete's Beach and Clearwater, we came to prefer this location rather than all of the hustle and bustle in the other areas. You can get there in about 5-10 minutes. I originally booked a room in Indian Shores but decided to give this hotel a try because of the MUCH lower price for a much bigger room. It did not disappoint. We stayed in a 1-bedroom suite for 9 nights. The rooms were very clean and included a full size refrigerator, dishwasher (that's where the dishes are stored) and microwave. The bedroom is VERY LARGE and has a king size bed and tv. The living room has a foldout bed in the couch. The staff was very friendly. The free hot breakfast was perfect! We stopped at Walmart a few times during our trip to pick up some beer, wine (drank them while sitting outside by the outdoor fireplace) and evening snacks. There are many restaurants by as well.
Would not return
We love the Riu brand and typically stay at the palace level. I didn’t understand what my travel agent meant by the food not being as good but he was right. We did not enjoy the buffet and items were not labeled or were labeled incorrectly. Steak house was good. I also found the drinks to have an odd flavor. Nothing was smooth to the point I stopped drinking any liquor by day 3. The worst part of our trip was how busy the resort was. We heard that discounts were provided to residents to come in for the day. So it just ended up to be very busy and hard to enjoy the pools. Too many screaming kids. Between Covid and the time of year we were shocked that we had issues finding pool chairs. Many days there were none available. At the beach it was beautiful but again the chairs were always taken. The one great thing was how well they handled a hurricane while we were there. Staff was amazing and we felt totally safe. We would not return to this location and wished we would have stuck with the palace closer to Cancun.
Vacay 2021 Costa Mujeres
My wife and I recently visited Costa Mujeres and stayed at the RIU Dunamar. We chose this location because it was nestled away from the hustle and crowds of Cancun and we are no strangers to the RIU name. Now this isn’t your typical situation with Covid so we took that into consideration. With that said, the accommodations, grounds and pools were that of any RIU resort, clean, taken care of and for the most part up to date. The food was probably the biggest disappoint for us, as it wasn’t even close to our last stay at RIU Palace in Cabo. It was bland, boring and felt like a repeat of a bad dream every day we were there. We tried every restaurant they had and the food was all at best mediocre . The wait staff was very attentive and covid precautions were taken seriously. Thank you to Sunney, she was very sweet and was full of energy making sure we had our hand sanitizer before getting food! The room was clean but also bland and bring your own soap, shampoo and conditioner, the one they provide smells horrible and my wife complained of no conditioner at all. The fridge in the room was stocked with Dos XX’s and water with some soda, no liquor in the rooms but not a deal breaker. House keeping did a great job everyday, so kudos for that. Onto the best part of our stay, the pool and swim up bar! So for whatever reason the mixed drinks did not taste very good, we couldn’t put our finger on it but the taste was just off. Into our lives steps Gerardo, a genuine and super attentive bartender/drink guru! Gerardo was a magician with our drinks, after trying almost all we could think of, this man made a delicious “Bushwacker and Banana Monkey”. Never had them before so it was a treat and was our go to. Gerardo was on top of his game, always making sure everyone’s drinks were full and poolside needs met. When I say this guy made our vacation and stay at RIU Dunamar worth while, he was a head above all the rest and did it all with a smile that the face mask couldn’t hide. Thank you so much Gerardo, we look forward to seeing you again! Also we would like to say stop by the gift shop and see Maria, she was so nice, helpful and patient that my wife and I bought 2 pairs of high end sunglasses from her and neither of us really needed them! All in all, if you want a resort that’s secluded with great views, a great staff and a place to relax, this is the spot! One final note, we opted for a late check out at 1pm vs 11am based on our flight departure. When I asked if we could extend our check out they wanted to charge me an additional 840 pesos, roughly 40 bucks. When I questioned the desk clerk about the extra charge, he then said he could do it for 50% off and would give me the 2 extra hours for 420 pesos, roughly 20 bucks. Although I felt I shouldn’t have had to pay as most hotels will gladly do this as a courtesy, I see this RIU must be trying to make up for lost revenue. Either way I paid it and my wife and I weren’t rushed out the door. Hope this helps and I hope you have a great vacation.
was here june 2029 clean, had some issues with cabs/ very un-orginized with check in and check out. The pools are very hot and no circulation of cool water. You can imagine all the people at bar pool peeing and so very hot, all 3 or 4 pools they had very hot. that was probably my biggest thing.
