Disappointing Stay at the Renaissance Portsmouth

My recent experience at the Renaissance Portsmouth Hotel was unfortunately quite disappointing, falling significantly short of the standards typically expected from a Renaissance property. The staff lacked adequate training, and we were overcharged for our stay. Customer service was notably lacking. When I called the manager, Marcus, he was rude and abruptly hung up during our conversation, which is an unacceptable level of customer service. Adding to these issues, the hotel's kitchen was undergoing renovations during breakfast hours. Furthermore, the bed in our room was uncomfortably firm. Given these issues, I would strongly recommend exploring other Marriott properties in the area, such as a Fairfield Inn. This Renaissance location did not live up to expectations.

Tony makes the best omelets in the morning

During my stay at the Renaissance Hotel, Tony Black at the omelet station was truly the highlight of my mornings—and honestly, my entire trip. His warm energy, attention to detail, and incredible omelet-making skills made breakfast feel like a personalized experience every day. No matter how early it was, Tony greeted guests with a smile and conversation that made you feel like a regular. I can confidently say that I’ll be choosing this hotel again solely because of Tony and his unforgettable omelets. He’s a gem and the kind of hospitality every hotel should be proud of.

Decent spot to stay at the Portsmouth waterfront

It's nice enough for a place to rest, but nothing really special, except the view. The staff was friendly, so a lot of the minor complaints were not really under their control. First, the layout is bad. The "front" desk is not in the front, but down a long walkway. Then the elevators are another long walk away from the front desk. There was not a room service menu in the room or even a QR code, you have to have the Bonvoy app, or look at a menu down in the restaurant. And the bathroom door is an odd farmhouse door or whatever it's called. It doesn't shut, it more hangs down from a rod somewhat near the doorway, sliding back and forth. It worked out all right for just my wife and I. But I imagine it would be super weird for an entire family or business trips with colleagues. I appreciated the microwave in the same spot as the ice machine. It's a little bit better than not having one at all, since they've decided this is one of those places too fancy to have a microwave in your actual room.

Excellent customer support from Rosanna Colon!

I worked with Rosanna Colon in reserving a conference room for two days and she was absolutely great in dealing with the multiple questions and requests I had. Working for my organization entails a dynamic environment with constant change. Rosanna understood the importance, challenges with my requests, and consistently kept me updated. I received numerous emails and follow up calls, to ensure I fully understood what options were available. Her professionalism and understanding would make me a return client. If there’s any planning and reservations needed from Renaissance Portsmouth-Norfolk Water Front Hotel, be sure to ask for Rosanna Colon. Thank, you Rosanna and your staff for your professionalism and outstanding customer service!

    Could be better

The hotel has been renovated and the furnishings are in good condition. The beds are not great but comfortable enough. Unfortunately house keeping, or the lack of, is awful. Over the course of 7 days housekeeping came once for a full service. Oddly, it was after the first night and not needed. I ran out of coffee on day three and despite stopping at the front desk daily and asking for coffee and towels it was never delivered. House keeping came to the room on day 4 and made up the bed but did not leave coffee or fresh towels. In fact, my dirty towels were picked up off the floor and hung up. The shower was full of mold. And the doors, by design, slam shut which is very loud especially at night when you are trying to sleep.
