    Wonderful stay

Very nice rooms at Outrigger Reef. Housekeeping was excellent. Mary was so very friendly and attentive making sure everything was just right for us. Would certainly come again to this hotel for the quality rooms and service as well as the perfect location to the beach, shops and restaurants.

A Farewell to Aloha: A Heartfelt Reflection on a Beloved Destination

Writing this review feels bittersweet, as it’s not easy to critique a place that once felt like a home away from home. For years, this hotel was my haven—an oasis where hospitality, charm, and the beauty of the beach intertwined seamlessly. I returned year after year, even switching mid-vacation from other properties that couldn't hold a candle to this one. It’s a place I’ve cherished in my heart for decades, but my recent visit left me questioning if it’s the same magical destination I once knew. When I decided to introduce my young family to this cherished slice of paradise, my expectations were high. After all, this was where I’d made countless memories of warm hospitality, the iconic Shorebird restaurant, and the easy access to a pristine beach that felt like stepping into a postcard. But what greeted me on this trip was a shadow of its former self, seemingly overtaken by a management philosophy that prizes profit over experience. The changes were impossible to ignore. Breakfast inclusions—a hallmark of the experience—are now a paid “club” that only makes sense for larger families. The staff’s legendary warmth has dwindled to near nonexistence. And most heartbreakingly, the beach that defined this property is now just a memory, lost not only to natural erosion but also to the lack of proactive sand-pumping efforts. The beach, the soul of this destination, feels neglected—an oversight that speaks volumes about a shift in priorities. The Shorebird, a treasured icon for decades, is gone too. Its relaxed, family-friendly vibe and generous portions have been replaced by a generic restaurant with an uninspired menu, tiny portions, and little flexibility. Even the staff seemed disheartened when reminiscing about the Shorebird’s golden days—a sentiment I shared. A low point of our stay was an uncomfortable encounter at the front desk. I approached to inquire about free kids’ meal inclusions that I’d noticed on our itinerary. The initial response was dismissive, with the staff insisting it wasn’t included. Even after I produced proof, their reluctance to help was palpable. While the issue was eventually resolved, the experience was emblematic of a broader issue: a lack of care that permeated much of the property. Housekeeping was the saving grace of our stay—friendly, polite, and reminiscent of the service this hotel was once known for. But the overall atmosphere left much to be desired. The warm, welcoming lobby has been replaced with a sterile, modern aesthetic that feels more Miami than Hawaiian. It’s a glaring departure from the charm and personality this place once embodied. It’s clear there’s been a significant shift in management and focus, and while I understand the pressures of running a business, that focus should never overshadow the guest experience. This visit left me feeling like just another number, and for the first time in over 30 years of travelling to Hawaii, I’m unsure if I’ll return. Hawaii has always held a special place in my heart, but perhaps its incredible success has dulled the warmth and gratitude that made it so special. With friendlier, more affordable options in the South Pacific, it’s hard to justify coming back when the magic is fading. This hotel was once a place of aloha, but now, it feels like just another business. To the property owner, I hope you see this as a heartfelt plea, not just a critique. This hotel has the bones of greatness, and with a renewed focus on hospitality and the guest experience, it could regain its former glory. I’d love nothing more than to see that happen—and to come back one day to find the place I once loved, thriving once again. Lastly, I wish I had known just how much the beach had disappeared before I booked. It feels misleading to see photos that no longer reflect the reality of the property. Updating these images would be a simple yet meaningful step for management to set honest expectations for future guests. Transparency goes a long way, and I hope this feedback inspires some thoughtful updates.

Be sure to request change if you are not happy with the room assignment

I have been to this hotel multiple times because of the convenient location for beach access and actions in Waikiki. But I wish the overall experience could be better. I found they always assigned you to a "worst of that category" room unless you asked to switch. I booked the Pacific Tower ocean view and they gave me a room with the least ocean view (see photos - honestly I think that room should be partial ocean view), room number 44 - worst of all ocean view. There are also some "machine" noises from the hotel across which is annoying and disrupts my sleep. Luckily, they are willing to switch me to another room after the first night. My overall experience would be excellent if they gave me a better room to begin with. This is the third time I experienced this kind of treatment at the hotel. Perhaps I should call and specifically ask for a better room next time I go.

    A grand vacation.

Everything was great except for the cockroaches in the bathroom. Great location and service. Bonie took great care of us:-)We really enjoyed having the beach near by. Monkey Pod was delicious and convenient. The live music nightly was very charming and enchanting.
