Not a good stay
My stay at this all-inclusive hotel was incredibly disappointing and certainly not reflective of the 5-star rating it claims to have. Upon arrival, I quickly noticed a lack of clean towels, and the mini fridge in my room was never restocked, despite repeated requests. The staff's response was unfriendly and unhelpful, simply stating they were out of stock. The toiletries provided were hardly replenished, which was frustrating. I also paid for the premium alcohol package, expecting a higher quality experience, but it fell short. They were out of Prosecco and continuously promised to deliver it, yet it never arrived. The pool area was not well-maintained, and the food offered was mediocre at best. There was no entertainment to speak of, and all dining options closed by 10 PM, leaving no late-night alternatives. The cleanliness of the beds was questionable, and housekeeping visits were infrequent. The customer service throughout my stay was a huge letdown, with staff often displaying a poor attitude. The additional $25 per night for premium bar access was certainly not justified. Overall, this hotel failed to meet even basic expectations and does not deserve its 5-star promotion.

First experience in CR
We’ve always wanted to visit Costa Rica, but the cost was a hurdle. This time, we chose this hotel because it was nearly half the price! The reviews were generally positive, and the few negative ones seemed to be isolated incidents that can occur anywhere. Having only been to Cuba, I was eager to experience the food and accommodations in a new setting. To be honest, though, the buffet was a bit disappointing—there were limited options, likely due to the low occupancy. I imagine it’s better during peak season, but it was a letdown. The best meals were definitely outside the hotel; the local restaurants serve incredible food, though they can be pricey. As for the accommodations, they felt on par with a decent resort in Cuba, but I’ve stayed in places that were cleaner and better maintained. There were no beers in the mini-fridge, but we bought groceries nearby. I also noticed a lack of room service menus. And the stairs—wow, there are a ton! We quickly figured out to use the roads behind the resort to avoid them. The beach was small, but with so few people around, it was quite enjoyable and felt more private. The staff were generally nice, but the lobby team seemed a bit off. The women there didn’t appear very happy, which was surprising. We chatted with other guests, and they noticed the same thing. The highlight of our stay was definitely José Soto from “On the Beach Tour.” He was always cheerful, eager to chat, and incredibly helpful with tours, dining, and cultural insights. Would I recommend this resort? I have mixed feelings. I can’t compare it to other places in Costa Rica, but I’m not sure I would recommend it. Sometimes, even a fantastic staff isn’t enough to make up for other shortcomings.

2 weeks at the Occidental Papayago
My wife and I spent two weeks at the Occidental Papayago in Sep 2024. Our room was spotless and refreshed daily – The cleaning staff was doing an excellent job. The hotel ground was very well maintained; so were the common areas and the two pools. Early on during the holiday, we experienced a problem with the AC unit and ‘Sandy’ at the front desk was instrumental in having the problem fixed; Thanks Sandy! There was a marked improvement in daily entertainment activities between weeks one and two of our holiday – good job folks! Being out and about during the day, we only watched one evening show – but what a show! The Saturday evening saxophone-lady is incredible. A must watch. The ‘à la carte’ restaurants (Italian and Oriental) were quite good and the serving staff were diligent. The beach about one-km long and its width varies with the tides. Although the buffet staff is excellent, what this resort needs to become a 5/5 is, in my opinion, to improve the quality, variety and presentation of the food served at the evening buffet.

Costa Rica
This resort is overall a pleasant resort to stay at the staff for all very friendly and helpful. The food at the restaurants were very good food at buffet at the snack bar could use a little help. They have a disco that goes seven nights a week that has a DJ. Also two lounges to sit at and have drinks. The rooms could use a little updating and the showers had low water pressure and the couch need to be replaced, but overall there was minor issues. We had a pleasant stay.
