The Good, the OK and the Bad
The good: Staff was very friendly. Transportation to and from the airport and around the property was amazing. The grounds are well kept, and the pools were clean. We got a couples massage at the spa which I highly recommend. The pools always had enough lounge chairs for everyone. We spent the most time at the pool with the swim up bar which was lovely, and the bartenders are pretty funny. The OK: Rooms were fine, a little outdated but hey, you're in Costa Rica. The grounds are pretty spread out, but we were always able to catch a ride anywhere on the property, so it really wasn't a big deal. Food was passable, nothing extraordinary but also nothing that got us sick. We did get a couple of tiny crabs in our shower at some point. We didn't mind them, but others might find that uncomfortable. The bad: For whatever reason, our room wasn't ready for check-in until 2 hours past check in time. They also did not have the bay room view available that we registered for. They suggested moving to the bay room view when it became available the second day we were there, but it seemed like a waste of time to move at that point. While we were there, a man was attacked by an iguana (he didn't see it coming, wasn't messing with it) where the iguana clamped onto his fingers. This required stitches and a tetanus shot. Seemed like a freak situation but you need to watch out for the wild animals. We also heard that someone got stung by a scorpion in their room while we were there. Overall, decent stay. This isn't the most expensive resort, so you really just get what you paid for. Not sure if I would go here again, but I don't have any strong feelings against it.

Birthday Trip
We had a wonderful stay at the Occidental Papagayo. The location was perfect for but if your looking to explore city life. That’s and 30min uber drive in town. The staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating. My room was spotless, with a comfortable bed and great views. I especially enjoyed the delicious breakfast buffet and the relaxing pool area. Check-in took awhile though but we had plenty to do on the resort until our rooms were ready.

Incompetent
My husband and I booked our stay as it was closer to the airport for us to fly out. The resort itself was amazing. Although we did not have any hot water in our room. I did leave my expensive prescription glasses & Sunglasses in the room when we checked out. I called the hotel (long distance) the day we arrived back in Canada. The gentleman that I spoke to assured me that they were there and to email pictures of the glasses to verify they were mine. This was completed - No response back from the hotel. I emailed several times. I spoke to several people who then stated that my prescription glasses and sun glasses are not there and could not be found. The original gentleman that I spoke to said he was going to check the cameras because the hard covered case was missing - again no response. I had arranged to have a driver from Samara be able to pick them up for me and drop them off with my friends that are still in CR. I am pretty upset that one person can tell me YES they are there and then when I call to give the hotel the name of the driver that will be picking them up they are now not to be seen. We paid way more then we should have to stay there for one night because it was more convenient then travelling 2.5 hours to the airport at 3am. I found that the staff had no communication amongst each other. I was transferred to several people who had no clue what was happening and having to explain over and over my situation was pretty frustrating. I also at one point was hung up on because they had guests in front of them. Note to everyone - double check your room before you leave! (Which I usually triple check) as you won't get a straight answer from anyone at this hotel. They are not very helpful and they have no communication amongst each other.

WORST resort I have ever been to
This was the worst vacation experience I have ever had! On our first evening, I pulled open a glass door to go into a hallway and the door shattered all over me, cutting me in several places. A staff member took me to the front desk and sat me down in the lobby and had to go teach for supplies to bandage my injuries. A fellow guest helped me clean up the blood that was all over my hands and legs so that I could see how badly I was hurt. No staff member apologized or offered any other assistance. I went to the manager the next day to request supplies to rebandage my cuts as they were still bleeding. We waited 30 minutes for the first aid person to come in and rebandage me. In addition, the food is terrible! We went to the specialty restaurant called the Grill, which is a steakhouse. My husband's steak was so tough, he couldn't cut it with a sharp knife. The buffet selections are minimal and not quality. There are also raccoons everywhere! While we were eating in the Grill, about 6 raccoons came into the restaurant and got up on an empty table and started eating from the plates people had just vacated. No staff chased them off. Our rooms was never really clean - the coffee cups actually had something on them - visibly dirty. We never had washcloths - only sometimes getting more than 2 towels. We will NEVER visit this resort again.
