This was our second trip to the island of Kauai in couple of years. We stayed at the Poipu area last time. Lihue is the main town closest to the airport. We enjoyed the hotel as it had every amenities that you’re looking for. Fantastic pool area and just walk few steps and you’re on the beach. What we like the most is that there are so many great restaurants that are local favorites, not necessarily catered to tourists. You’re 20-30 minute drive to most parts of the island attraction. If you’re a golfer you can enjoy the ocean course at Hokuala which is on the property. Also, 10 minutes away, there is Pukakea golf course, which is a better value but no oceanside holes. Great view of the mountains. 20 minutes away there is Wailua golf, which is Kauai’s municipal course. For me Lihue is a better location as I am not constantly among so many tourists and get more feel of the local culture.
Close to the airport in a nice secluded cove. On the beach property with a large pool and several hot tubs. Well groomed landscaping. Rooms were basic. Rooms in back of property (away from beach front) has windows that do not open.
Others Protesteth Too Much
After reviewing a number of recent reviews claiming “outdated,” “worn and dirty,” etc. we had some misgivings about our scheduled visit to this resort. Fears about the Coronavirus didn’t help. However, our experience at this lovely resort was anything but negative. Our partial-ocean view room was clean,in very good shape and well appointed. The king bed was very soft and comfortable. The daily towel service was prompt and as soft and fluffy as our experiences at dozens of other top-rated hotels and resorts around the world. In fact, I asked managers if, by chance, our room in the Ha’upu Tower had already been renovated. Nope. Although we have talked to a number of contractors busy studying and measuring for the big renovation planned later this year. Granted, the breakfast buffet is several levels below the $31 per person charge, but this is Hawaii. However, one of the best bargains in the Kukui’s restaurant is the $8 fruit and granola bowl, which was delicious. Most everyone compliments the friendly staff and we are echoing their comments. Young Bryan at the check-in desk on our late arrival was a perfect example. We asked if an upgrade was available. He showed us our room location and said the upgraded rooms (at $50 a night) were not really any better. He was also incredibly welcoming for the two of us who had just finished 8 hours travel to get here. Maids have been efficient, personable and very helpful. Our room is cleaned early each day. Other staffers are just as friendly. We did take a lead from one reviewer and drove into LiHue for breakfast at Dani’s. Our ham and cheese omelets and hash browns were just great, and reasonable. However, the staff breakfast suggestion about TipTop cafe and motel should be quickly discarded. The very quick service did not make up for the canned pineapple and packaged reheated hash browns. A rental car is very handy for getting around. Costco gas is 50-cents below others and the amazing, fantastic SHAKA GPS tour guides to four different areas of the island are simply unbelievable. We travel a lot. We submit reviews a lot. We do submit negative reviews if they can be helpful to others. But I thought some of the reviews posted for this resort were unfair. Hopefully our observations will be helpful for those planning to visit Kauai.
40th honeymoon trip
We came here as we had come to Kauai for our original honeymoon. This hotel was recommended however we are not happy. We arrived and were told we had to take all our suitcases down an escalator. This was very difficult but we managed. We then had to take them down five stairs. Not fun. When we finally got to check in they were more interested in upgrading us for a fee. Not impressed. We got to our room and then went for dinner. When we got back we went out on the balcony all we could hear were kids screaming. They had given two older people a room in front of the kids pool. We went to change rooms and they only wanted to give us an upgrade for a fee. We finally got another room but with two queen beds not a king. They did not explain that there was a parking lot close to our room. And guess what there is an elevator we could have used to get to the front desk. Would not stay here again.
Needs updating now
The pool is beautiful and large. The staff is friendly and helpful. There is never nowhere to park, you have to circle waiting for someone to leave. I wouldn’t sit on the couch in our room, it was the same couch from years ago, and was gross looking. Room smelled moldy, especially when air ran, no screens on balcony door, so you are stuck with odor. Paid for the breakfast buffet ahead of time, it was could, and the same food everyday. Not sure I would stay here again, even after remodel. The hotel needs updating now, not in August.
