Hotel overview

Set amidst Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve, this 249-room luxury San Diego resort captures the elegance and comfort of an old-world Mediterranean estate with an enviable Southern California locale. Its design honors the indelible style of visionary architect Addison Mizner (1872 – 1933) who drew his inspiration from Spain’s palaces, France’s sun-washed coastal retreats and Florence’s decorative arts to define the revered communities of Palm Beach and Boca Raton.

    Grande Del Mar Golf trip

The Grande exceeded our expectations in every way. The golf was fantastic. The property is beautiful. The staff was exceptional. What separates the Grande Del Marr from other luxury properties we have visited is the staff going a step further, consistently, to exceed our expectations.

High Tea - lovely, but SOOO overpriced

Three of us had high tea on a Saturday afternoon. We sat in the library and were served by a wonderful waiter who was attentive but who did not hover. We each ordered a different type of tea so were able to have exactly what we wanted. We declined the offer of champagne. The tea consisted of three courses. We each had 3 small finger sandwiches of different types, then 2 types of scones, then 4-5 tiny petits fours type pastries. They were all delicious. All in all it was a lovely afternoon, except when the bill came. A pot of tea and 9-10 small food items came at a price of $65 per person, plus a mandatory tip (and I think we were taxed on the mandatory tip). There are other lovely places in San Diego that offer high tea for a more reasonable price, so we won't go back to the Farimont Grand.

It is one of few triple five star properties in the world for a reason

To say that this hotel surpassed all our expectations is to say nothing! Before this stay I did not know much about triple five star properties in the world and I could not even imagine what is includes. We stayed two nights with Fairmont Grand Del Mar and these were two best night in my life. Starting with the greetings from security at the resort entrance and up to the nicest ladies at the reception. Their concierge service is also excellent and we easily booked a table at their Amaya restaurant. Our waitress was so knowledgeable of the menu and gave us the best recommendations. My special love goes to scallops with beetroot risotto. I guess I would run out of characters to describe how great all the staff at Fairmont was! We were treated like real royalties! Definitely staying here again once back to San Diego.
