    Won’t be going back

First the good news: Positives: Exterior property beautiful, very pretty and well appointed. Many of the staff very pleasant and eager to please. Special shout out to Anna, possibly concierge or part of administration/management. Also shout out to Ezekiel who worked at the food truck and Bloved restaurant. Excellent service-always smiling willing to please and go the extra mile. Thalassa food and ambience very good - esp dinners outside on the patio Now the problems: Resort really deteriorated over time. Been there 8-10 times over past few years. WONT BE GOING BACK -Long wait for warm water during peak times - 15 minutes at least - especially late afternoon, early evening. It was either ice cold or scalding hot. Adjustments did not work. Dribbly shower head - low low pressure. And we were in a top- of - the - line room -Toilet flush pressure very low. Took 2 flushes each time. And then some paper would often remain. Pretty disappointing for a presumably high end resort -Room service problematic. Room service menu was supposed to be online but the link lead to a 404 error. Another link, sent by customer service, lead to a 401 unauthorized code error. Room service menu finally cut and pasted by customer service. Very limited menu. And no room service for wine AC keypad didn’t adjust temperature -Frig door broken - no arms on door -outdoor shower on deck not working. Handle just spun - Golf Free Golf has always been one of the big attractions about this resort. But Golf course maintenance has deteriorated significantly since the last time we were there. “Free golf” is actually $60 usd for cart rental (used to be $25 - with course much better maintained then) WE WONT BE GOING BACK!

The duplex suite with the private plunge pool made this the best and most relaxing vacation we’ve ever taken.

We spent 7 days at Catalonia Royal Bavaro at the end of January. Overall, staying in the duplex suite with the private plunge pool made a world of difference compared to past stays at other resorts in Punta Cana. For us, it will be a significant factor we consider in planning future trips. To provide some context for this review, we are the types of travelers who prefer to relax on vacation and are not particularly social. We are also more inclined to be in the water (either the ocean or the pool) rather than lay on the beach. Not having to fight for chairs, or sit out in the hot pool was 100% worth the room price in our opinion. There was always some shade covering some part of the pool, and always sun on another part so you could be as comfortable as you wanted to be. The room is spacious and very comfortable. The bed mattress is in the firmer-side, and there are many pillows. I believe they also have a pillow menu, though we were fine with the pillows provided. The flooring is adequately anti-slip for the amount of water that gets on there from the pool. Both the loft and living room area have AC controls and can be adjusted. I wouldn’t turn them off entirely - they have to work to hard when you turn them back on and that can cause them to leak water on the stairs to the loft. The mini fridge is stocked with beer, pop/soda (mix) and water. There are also snacks that are replaced daily (Oreos and peanuts) and coffee. The beach is more weedy by the water than others we’ve been to - but there are clear spots, particularly when the tide is up, they work to keep the beach clean, and we saw lots of fish - there were people snorkeling every day. Water shoes are great if you’re going in the water. The “privileged exclusive” beach area had beach beds and chairs packed in close to each other near the beach bar - and they had towels on them pretty much all day. As I mentioned in the beginning, we aren’t “lay on the beach” people for the most part, so we didn’t actually use this area at all. The beach and the pools were closed in the evenings, which was another bonus to having the private plunge pool - a night swim followed by a warm shower before bed = Zzzzzzz Staying in the duplex suites, you should get a welcome gift on arrival or next day - it consists of 3 x bottles of alcohol and a fruit bowl. Unfortunately, we received ours after dinner the last night we were there… it would have been nice to have throughout the week, but we were within sight of the bar by the infinity pool so it wasn’t missed. That said, if you should be receiving the welcome gift and don’t, call the desk and ask for it. We felt very safe on the resort - no issues in that regard at all. One day I accidentally left a bag out with some tip money it by mistake and though the room had been cleaned, the bag and money was untouched when we returned. The room next to ours by way of the entry courtyard was under renovation, so there were maintenance personnel there during the days - but they were by and large out of the way and didn’t make much noise. We suspect they are in the process of upgrading or uplifting these rooms - but don’t know for sure. The little shop on the Royal side, and several of the shops on the family side have souvenirs and things like floaties and water shoes. There is also a drug store, but they didn’t carry bandaids, which was why I’d gone there (blisters) - so you probably want to make sure you bring everything you might need in that regard. The entertainment on the Royal side was smaller and more intimate than what I’d seen at other resorts. The family side had a stage for entertainment but we didn’t go to that side as we preferred the smaller “venue.” They did have to move into the piano bar whenever there was rain though. We didn’t go to the Casino/disco or the beach club as that’s not really our thing, so I can’t comment on those. We paid for roaming on our home plans with our cellphones. This is a more expensive option than a local SIM or eSIM, but we never had connectivity issues and service was pretty much the same as at home and our own phone numbers still worked, so for us not worrying about that was worth the extra $. Food: We ate at the buffet, several a la cartes, the food truck, and ordered room service. We did not get sick from any of them. The a la carts - Most of the food was excellent, most of the time, but when it wasn’t, it was completely disappointing. As an example - 2 BBQ beef dishes at the same restaurant: The NY strip at BLoved was a small, tough, fast-fry steak that was delivered overcooked. The grilled picanha however, also at BLoved, was a large portion, perfectly cooked, and amazing. That said, if you’re unhappy with something you should be able to send it back. The Buffet - these were pretty good for breakfast. There was an egg/omelet station and a variety of other items, fresh fruit, pastries, and a mimosa station. We did order room service once and it was pretty good and delivered very quickly (within 30 min!), but we ordered before the restaurants started dinner service so that probably helped. The pizza was surprisingly good. The food trucks on the beach are fantastic for lunch. The servers there keep track of a lot of orders amidst the rush of people and would check in if our order was long to let us know we’d not been forgotten. There is a juice bar by the food trucks that was very popular but we didn’t try it. One restaurant was closed while we were there (Italian, I think). General Tips: - Room AC tips - if you find that you’ve lost power to the lower AC controls and the AC isn’t running, the breaker panel is behind a slide-up panel beside the door - flip the breaker back on and you should be good to go. - if it rains really hard, the AC may leak in the stairs to the loft - this only happened once when we were there following 10 min of torrential rain. - there’s an umbrella in the closet by the door for when it rains - the Royal and the family side have different guest websites. When you check in, if you’re on the Royal side, ask for the QR codes for both sides (the code for the family side should be on the back of the Royal code). You can see the other restaurant and entertainment info on the second site. The same login works for both. - when we booked dinners at the a la cartes, it sent an email but didn’t show up in the site. If you want to confirm a booking, the 2 people at the desk beside the front desk can do that for you. *these two folks are SUPER helpful - go see them for anything you need and they will help you out. - check the entertainment listings for food-related things on the beach most days in the afternoon (BBQ, coconut drinks, etc). - you will see “Exclusive” sections and rooms throughout the resort as well - this is a sort of time-shared travel club that Catalonia offers. If you want info on this, you can attend the “VIP Breakfast” that someone will invite you to, usually when you first arrive or the next morning. - hotel wifi is spotty, and it’s Huawei (if that matters to you).

    Nice Stay, and good food

We travelled from Jan 18-25. After getting engaged on the plane ride down to Dominican, and both of us turning 50 years old the week we stayed at the Cat~Royal. Our vacation was already looking to be a great week. And it was. My review will probably jump all over the place with last minute thoughts about the trip. I apologize in advance. Our room: it was nice. But I’ve stayed in better, I think it could use an update. We booked a swim up room and used the pool every day. It was nice to just lounge by your own pool in the afternoon if you had enough of the beach/reg.pool. The pools on the inside of the resort where the main pools are get more sun, then the ones on the other side of our building. I found the shower too small for 2 people. Yes, there were 2 sinks but on a very small countertop. Kinda made for a lot going on when we were getting ready to go out. There’s a very big soaker tub outside of the bathroom, near the bed. We never used it. I think they should blow those out, and make the bathrooms twice the size. I can honestly say, we never went without hot water. At times, the water was too hot. Our maid was great. We left her $5.00 US a day. She didn’t speak much English, but she had a great smile. Our bed was ok. A little soft. We slept good every night. The air conditioning worked well. We did have safe problems, as it wouldn’t open one day,…and another day, it wouldn’t close using the code. Food: I must say, we never had a bad meal. Everything was great. The servers were awesome. We really liked John in the Thalassa restaurant. He took care of us almost every time we ate there. Sorrento has great pizza for lunch, and we also loved the cheese garlic sticks. We ate at Tao -Cat. This one was probably our least favorite. It just wasn’t what we thought it would be. Beloved was also good. We ate there the first night we got there. Believe it or not, I got chicken fingers in a steak house, and I loved them. The drinks are also very good. We had expresso martini’s every night at the piano bar. The house wines are also good. And love Presidente Beer. We probably spent $150.00 US on tips during the week, weather it was at meals, or drinks. We don’t mind tipping. The Beach: the sand was nice, but the water in front was the most disappointing. The only time we went in the water was to walk out to the sandbar. We did a day trip to downtown PC and went to a public beach (20 minutes away) and spent the afternoon in the ocean. Overall, our week was fantastic. The weather was beautiful, and we had such a great time. I don’t think I would come back to this resort in particular, but I would definitely stay at another Catalonia again.
