    Mixed Feelings

I’ve stayed at this property multiple times. Trip started out poorly when I noticed the refundable rates for a privileged room had dropped significantly from our nonrefundable rates. I reached about a possible price adjustment and was told no—nonrefundable meant exactly that. I thought that unfair, particularly as every major hotel chain was offering refunds/price adjustments due to coronavirus scare and reduced occupancy. Also, despite notifying hotel of an early am arrival (and despite the hotel previously accommodating us on a previous stay) when we arrived we were told we needed to wait for a manager to show up and make the decision. This is where things turned ugly—the girl who showed up was possibly the rudest person I’ve ever encountered in the hospitality industry. We spent the am by the pool and our room when we finally checked in was a very nice updated room. Here is my take on the hotel—1) upgraded privileged rooms were extremely nicer than those on previous stays; 2) across the board, restaurant servers, maids, bartenders, landscapers go above and beyond (and we tipped accordingly); 3) upgraded/renovated pool is fabulous (now has a swim-up bar, clearly defined areas for different depths; and some chairs that sit almost in the water; 4) beach area for privileged members has changed with much more space dedicated to guests of the Catalonia Royal next door; 5) breakfast offerings no longer include made-to-order crepes, although the crepe stand on the beach remains; 6) wifi is vastly improved; and 7) the beach truly is lovely despite some erosion and great snorkeling thanks to the concrete balls sunk out by the ropes. Food at the buffets remains unremarkable although the servers and cooks remain their cheerful selves. Particularly loved the lunch pizzas at Sorrento. The setting of the beachside restaurant is superb and expanded, but the food is mediocre at best. Throughout the property are various upgrades (particularly spots for photos). Many paths, however, have been rerouted or no longer exist and those with mobility issues may find it difficult to navigate as shortcuts no longer exist. All in all, a lovely stay with the exception of the reception staff.

Beautiful peaceful resort with fantastic beach

We have been to this resort 3 times, loved the beach, always clear, calm and warm water, I mean the Sea ;) The service, food, entertainment are great, my kids loved the kids club as well. The standard rooms definately need upgrades, travel club and previleged rooms were amazing. VIP service is what you are looking for while being on vacation. So we signed up for a travel club, and it is worth it.

    Needs improvement

The checkin was stressful. We were privileged but were initially given regular bracelets. Being privileged, I thought our room would be close to the pool, beach and restaurants, but were close to the lobby and far from everything else! The lobby , unlike other resorts that had bars and entertainment had nothing at all.our room was nice but for the money we spent on privileged, it should have been closer to everything. The rooms that were really close catered to “exclusive” which were timeshare. The main buffet was mediocre and ran out of bacon, orange juice in the mornings. The omelette guy Raphael was friendly and excellent! The steakhouse and Italian ala cartes were excellent As privileged guests we ate and drank at The Terrace which was good. The one exception was the day before valentines when they shut the whole place down for a special dinner for some guests( three tables). They could have sectioned off part of the restaurant and kept it open. At the main bar La Merengere I think, there was a girl Juanita who served cappuccino and she very nice and friendly. The drinks were yummy and the banana mama was to die for. We were told that being privileged, we could order better drinks, and I watched the pool bartender pour a non Baileys liqueur into a glass when I asked for Baileys! As privileged guests we were entitled to Bali beds in a sectioned off area by the beach but we never saw any except for “exclusive” guests. The ocean was warm and very beautiful. When dining at the Italian a la carte one night there were young kids that were noisy and misbehaving at a separate table while their parents did nothing at a nearby table, which ruined our evening while the staff did nothing. The hotel is very Spanish and caters to Europeans. The extra money spent on privileged was definitely not worth it.Our housekeeper was outstanding!

Bring your own sun parasol if you need shade

Wow this is a first ! You have to upgrade to qualify for sun protection . Health of guests obviously not an option unless. You pay extra . Quite outrageous . Beware the privilege part of beach . We opted for this This is an area at the back of the beach no sea view . Yes a sun shade is provided but very misleading on website don’t bother with it . Staff just programmed to try and make more money out of you once you get there . Unlike the Catalonia Royal la romana adults only same group literally next to the standard part of beach but with beds and shades stretching from back to front of beach-which is what we exoected from the so called privileged part of beach . Shame on the Catalonia group Currently using rain umbrtells 👀

    Dominicana vacation

Not 100% satisfied, missing hot water in the evenings, while staying in the third floor, slow and not consistent internet access. Prob fixed when moved to ground floor after 7 days. Resort, food, place, beach and sea very nice and very good.
