Resort with everything to be great, but.... very very far from being great!!!
We stayed from the 3rd to the 10th of October at the Catalonia Grand Dominicus, I can now say that it was the worst experience in many years of travel to the Dominican Republic. Resort privileges the service to Dominicans and not to other tourists, when the amount paid for the stay at the Resort is very different! Some of the reasons: - Buffet closed during the week. This means that all the lunches were in a small buffet made in the pizzeria, and the food wasn’t simply good, everyone, literally everyone, was complaining!! (the dinner was always great at the restaurants) - During the week days at the breakfast we always had to ask for butter, because it didn't exist, there wasn't any type of cake, croissants, and when they appeared, all was from the day before, they were never fresh!!! and this applies also to the bread. - Lunches was with dozens of birds eating directly from the small buffet. The birds were also standing and eating in the ingredients to be used in making pizzas. - Covid?? During the weekend, with the resort almost full, or apparently full, the buffet was open and filled but the tables were simply not disinfected. These are just some (there were a lot more) of the reasons for pointing this out as a bad experience, and it is a shame as the resort has everything to be excellent. We even asked to speak to the manager, who was arrogant until I showed her a photo of the breakfast with the “boleria” cake station simply empty, without any croissant, cake, butter ... etc ... then she took a photo of my photo, apologized ,and simply turned her back and left leaving both of us standing in front of the reception. very very bad experience!!!
Beautiful Beach, Beach Restaurant & Great Wifi - Privilege Price was not worth the upgrade
The rooms were recently modernized and were comfortable but small. The crepes on the beach was a nice touch. Beautiful beach but no Bali beds in the Privilege section and the music from the pool was loud and could be heard on the beach. Service at the restaurants was good but hard for gluten free and vegans. Dairy free milk was only at the buffet. The front desk check in was over an hour on Sat. there were alot of Dominican locals checking in for the weekend so we didn't stay Sat/Sun & sought other accommodations for these 2 days. Social distancing was adhered to and all staff wore face masks. Buffet was available with sanitation and plastic disposable gloves upon entry. If I didn't pay for the privilege services that were not available this rating would be higher - No beach towels, robes or slippers in room, no beer in mini bar until the 4th day, no 24 hr rm service (you had to ask for the menu and it took 2 days to get) with some very stringent ordering restrictions and hard to get ahold of - what is listed on the menu is sometimes not what you get, no welcome cocktail or gift basket, no water services at spa, no turndown service and no special restaurant for Privilege. Our fridge was broken and we asked for replacement but it was never done the scale didn't work but was replaced the next day. The grounds were well maintained and the pool was nice but music was too loud. The beach is definitely the selling point at this resort.
Very poor experience, bad food even worse customer service
This property is not near any of the other properties in Punta Cana it is in Bayahibe. The location of the property and the price makes it attractive to locals more than international travelers. They do not speak English at the property, so don't expect anyone to understand you if you cant speak Spanish. The beach at the hotel is a small roped off affair so again don't expect anything "traditional Punta Cana" here. The food was bad except Friday and Saturday night which was acceptable, don't expect more than edible. The drinks were cheap off brands except Brugal (which is a decent Rum) the mixers were a sugary affair. The person i was with left early and even though i paid for two people for the entire stay any additional guest was charged at $70 a day! My credit card number were compromised, and I needed to use the hotel phone to call the credit card company since mine never did work despite the international plan. No help with reporting anything to the police and when I checked out they charged me for the phone call at $1 a minute.. So much for customer service... Be aware that travel to the hotel is not included either way and its $80 each way and about 45 mins to Punta Cana International airport. This is not a 4 star hotel or even a 3 star, I would give it 2 stars and advise anyone thinking of going here to pay the additional money and find a mainstream hotel.
The hotel is very beautiful and the garden makes it feel like your not in a tropical beach resort. Overall we enjoyed our stay and the staff was friendly and welcoming. Check in and check out was super easy and fast. We were giving two updated double beds garden rooms that were clean and ready for our on arrival. There are a few things that could be approved and yes we understand we are there during a pandemic. But let start with the buffet we never waited more than 5-10 minutes to be seated with a group of 5 and staff made sure we sanitize our hands, checked our temperature, and was giving gloves to use at the Buffet. But 75% of the time food was lukewarm or cold and selection not so great! Also be prepared to sweat it out because the building is an open area and they never turn on the fans to circulate the air in the building. Next the bar staff are friendly but can get overwhelmed with everyone trying to get drinks and it can take a wait to place a order and there’s only one beer selection and that’s the national Presidente! The pool area is nice and with a lot ppl we never felt it was overly crowded. The beach area is beautiful and the blue clear water makes up for a lot and beach chairs and umbrellas were easy to get and enjoy. Well housekeeper only came once during our stay and we thought water bottle would be replenished on an daily basis but that wasn’t the case. Next time we know to call and request a housekeeper because after a day at the beach the room can get very sandy and makes for a uncomfortable night! But overall we would be back to visit next year and give it a second try!

Disrespect by security we are not white so we have no voice ALL lives Matter no matter how cheap your resort is. Hotel is not worth price and its almost free............................... they treat you like you have no worth if you are not white american or from europe...
