    Lovely good value

The Barcelo Bavaro property is made up of two hotels, Barcelo Palace (Family) and Barcelo Beach (Adults), as well as a convention centre, golf course, and other family amenities. The massive compound is accessed through a main security gate and long, winding tree-lined road. The beach is (obviously) shared by both hotels and is accessible to adjacent hotels, but there are no vendors or hagglers. You can walk from one hotel to the other either on the beach beach (10 mins) or main road via a lovely covered walkway. Or, you can wait 15 mins and take the trolley. Adults guests can access the Palace, but Family (w/kids) cannot access the Adults hotel beyond the beach. The Adults hotel is entirely open-air/open-concept style, including the theatre, with lots of outdoor seating (covered and non) with both dining/buffets mostly facing the ocean. Dining rooms VERY nice. I loved the dark, natural woods and stone flooring that covered most of the hotel, thatched palapa roofing, and massive palm trees that were everywhere, including IN the pool. A beautiful tropical beach hotel. The Adults pool was one of the nicest I’ve ever seen. Irregular shaped and shallow all around, with a very shallow section to lay in for sunning. Some jetted areas and covered in dazzling blue mosaic tiles and sparkling clean. The gym is inside the spa at the Palace. The space is very nice, big, cool, bright, but the weight machines are in need of an upgrade. The treadmill/elliptical equipment seemed perfectly decent. I never did the group classes. I enjoyed walking there daily for a workout. It was never busy after 12 noon. A nice vibe overall. Bracelets opened and closed doors. My terracotta tiled room was bright and spacious, with a large mirrored closet with shelves, separate entry area, separate toilet and blackout curtains that actually close. I loved my ground floor room with my patio and patch of grass. Bed was firm and comfortable, real cotton linens were great, pillows were real pillows not those useless flaccid things I see too often. The A/C worked well, and could be set from the lowest low to highest high, plus there’s a ceiling fan. Shower water pressure was A+ but the bathroom is in dire need of an update. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a shower gel-shampoo-conditioner dispenser on the wall, however, all three products were good. Room was regularly stocked with bottled water coffee, drinks, beer, and kept immaculately clean. Safe worked well. Beach was very nice but often covered in seaweed, which grounds keepers worked in vain every morning to remove. Weather (in Jan-Feb) is very windy and the churn and waves made for an often yellow-green ocean that was unsightly on bad days but gorgeous on good days. The golden white sand was A+ perfect, the right combo of fluff and fine, and well packed for walking (and never hot). If you are a beach walker as I am, this is your beach. There are TONS of gorgeous palm trees lining the beach, and always more than enough loungers. Staff was very polite and friendly, often greeting you as they passed. Cleaning staff kept the hotel spotless. Towels never ran out, lounger chairs were comfortable, functional and plentiful. There are no bugs (almost strangely so) or local wildlife roaming around as you often see on vacation. Not even a stray cat. Some unremarkable birds, and brown pelicans diving for fish. I once saw a turtle in the water. Food was perfectly good and I always found something to eat. It’s not Club Med or The Royalton, but still a decent variety to suit most eaters. Favourites included: lamb, calamari, okra, and pumpkin mash. The desserts were not great. Since they don’t work with real dairy or chocolate (must be too expensive), everything is egg white or oil based, and lots of gelatine, mousses and custards. Yogourt was sweetened in a cup. They had ice cream but I didn’t try it. Too much sugary, syrupy, candied foods that looked unappetizing. They offered some dry cookies, which were all good, especially the walnut clusters. Here are my complaints: -ONE omelette station meant waiting almost 30 mins for eggs. I never had an omelette. Suggestion: offer a few types of scrambled eggs in the buffet. -NO English. Not the grounds keepers, cleaning staff or wait staff. Not even the lifeguards or beach security. NOT GOOD. -GYM. Would be amazing if there was a small gym on the Adults property with safer, newer machinery. Machinery at Palace was dated. -COFFEE. Automated machines dispensed very little coffee and often caused confusion and long line ups. Suggestion: Serve brewed carafe coffee at lunch as they do at breakfast. -BATHROOMS. Need updating. The price of this vacation was unbeatable and my stay was very good. Sleep quality was excellent. Overall 8/10. Gracias.

    Average

Adequate unless you are looking for evening entertainment. The food was average and sometimes cold. Service was excellent. Rooms were clean. Staff was very friendly. As par for the course, if you want a chair by the pool you need to claim a chair by 8:00 AM.

    6th Friends Vacay

Would have written sooner but sure enough upon returning a week ago Montazumas Revenge came on. I though I was very careful so for those with any type of digestive issues - you are forewarned. Having said that the 10 days our group of 7 had was even BETTER than I had anticipated. Personally my husband I and I have been vacationing in the Caribbean and Mexico over 30 years. Last year our group was at the Barcelo Maya Riviera (didn't get sick) and enjoyed that too. Highlights - Yuberkis and Mayra our two outstanding breakfast and lunch servers. We were drawn to Yuberkis first because of her GREAT smile. Then to top it off she was there to make the whole dining experience just nice. Most staff just seemed unhappy but what I noticed if you greeted them, thanked them, and treated them kindly they warmed up quickly. Mayra had our table for 7 ready with our drinks and knew what we wanted and when we wanted our coffee. She is an extremely hard worker and very efficient leader. Maria was another fun and hard working server in another part of the dining area. We truly appreciated all they did. My main concern from reading reviews was the food. I've been to the Dominican Republic 2 other times and from those times we always consider anything beef related - mystery meat. I honestly expected that this time. But to my pleasant surprise the beef was very very good. We went to the steak house twice and had fantastic cuts of beef as we did at other restaurants. The only restaurant where we had subpar food and service was The French - La Commedie. What an utter disappointment and waste of money. Couldn't get out of there fast enough. All the other restaurants were excellent. The Room - We decided that we really didn't care about the room this trip so booked the Superior Room for Adults Only side. Upon Arrival Joe at the desk said he was upgrading all 4 of our rooms to the Palace side but building one which is the one right next door to the adult section. I was a bit nervous because I had read horror stories of being "upgraded" only to find out they put you in a room complete with loads of issues. I told my new friend Joe that I would not hear the end of it if my group of friends were led down the wrong path in deciding to "upgrade". To our delight the room was very nice. For people really wanting an "Adults only " experience this might not be what you want because sure enough the first morning as I sat on my balcony drinking my coffee looking at the ocean a baby was up crying, then another screaming. It was a huge deal breaker for the rest of the group but as much as I love kids (have 9 grandkids that are a joy) on vacation I treasure those early morning coffee on the balcony start to the day. It wasn't every morning but something I couldn't not include in the review. The room itself was fine - served the purpose - Yes, if you don't make some effort (I put my wet bathing suit at the entrance of the shower, then the bathmat outside, the water goes all over the floor. Never found it necessary to put a ton of towels on the floor but yes, a slider to the shower would have made for a much better experience. The soaking tub on the balcony is wonderful - takes no time to fill and plenty of hot water. My one HUGE complaint. Why oh Why are there automatic lights that are triggered when you step into the sink are to walk down to the toliet area. SOOOOOOOO ANNOYING . I'm a very light sleeper so any movement to get anything in the bathroom lit up the entire room even though it was only the lights in the front hallway. Even if i just turned on the bathroom light would have made a difference. People in our group are early risers and walkers (as I sit and drink my early morning coffee) and put towels with clips (bring clips - people will take towels - it happened to us) so we always had lounge chairs but some days I saw people walking around late morning looking for chairs and ended up on the ground at the beach. The pool lounge chairs seemed to get snatched up in the morning too. Very thankful to the early risers in our group. We are not drinkers so can't comment on that but be aware that "virgin drinks" may come with alcohol and if this is an issue I would recommend a taste tester. One of the VERY frustrating issues at the French Restaurant where after asking for Virgin drinks brought two virgin and two non virgin and was "oh just try it". Not funny and the tip was given accordingly. Tips - We saw VERY little tipping. We are all big tippers in our group. We realize the word load these people endure to have a job and why people can't just be generous will always be a question in my head. The Beach - I read that Bavaro Beach was top 10? Really? I have been to A LOT of nicer beaches. This was fine but I wouldn't say top 10. Maybe of the island???? It is a walkable beach so if you are a beach walker you will enjoy that. Northing to really find on the beach in regards to shells etc. if you like to do that. Snorkeling - people were doing it but not sue they were seeing anything more than the rest of us just standing in the water looking down at the fish that would occasionally swim into you. Every other day they do water exercises in the ocean - that was fun. We did the Escape Room and ALMOST made it through. Something different - only takes an hour. Plenty of places to go shopping that makes it convenient. We had done the Dune buggy adventure trip the last time we had all been to the DR and this time nothing really jumped out at us. We didn't go to any of the evening shows - this is a group of 60 and 70 year olds - we are tired at night. The place is very clean and the grounds are beautiful. On departure flight was later in the evening so we didn't have to leave the grounds until 3:00 pm Fortunately there is a shower/blow dryer room to use as check out time is noon. I REALLY appreciate when resorts offer this . The airport is a 20 minute drive depending on traffic that makes it a good choise when you just want to basically get off the plane and get to the resort. All in all I was very pleasantly surprised with our trip to the Barcelo Bavaro Beach Resort and definitely would recommend. Unfortunately my stomach can't handle the water situation. Note - my last 3 days I did the pasta at lunch (the garlic oil was amazing) - the pasta is warmed in warm water in the sink and I'm wondering if that was it (we were there for 10 days) because I had eaten the salad the entire week, that they say is rinsed in water and that didn't seem to affect me. So ignore the negative Nancies and go enjoy!!!!

Something for everyone at this resort!

I travel extensively and this is my honest opinion. I'm just back from a week at Barcelo Bavaro Beach. We were a group of 50 who attended a destination wedding at this hotel. The wedding itself was absolutely beautiful. The bride and groom were very happy with their choice. This is a very large hotel which is not my personal preference. I stayed on the adults only side of the resort. You will need to wait for a train to bring you to and from some of the amenities ie: disco, casino, shopping, theatre. Rooms: Very dated, bathrooms and furnishings need an update. The beds are very comfortable. If you upgrade to Premium the room service is included and was quite good for coffee every morning. Beach: Beautiful, you can walk for miles. Getting chairs before 9 am is not an issue Food/Restaurants: The food at the resort is not terrible but I found it repetitive. There is a vegan area for you vegetarians which I thought was great. I ate at the Gourmet and Mexican restaurants and found them to be reasonably good. The drinks were top notch! They don't skimp on the alcohol which was a nice change at an all-inclusive Staff: This is where this hotel excels! Everyone there was friendly and intent on making my stay a wonderful one! Luisa in the Premium lounge went above and beyond to make my stay special. I cannot thank her enoujgh! Shows/activities: If you like to keep busy or stay out late having a great time, this really is the place for you. The shows at the main theatre were fantastic and the casino and disco were lots of fun as well. If you prefer a quiet, laid back vacation, the adults only side definitely provided that. There really is something for everyone here!
