I love it here!! We always stay here when we go to Maui. It’s close to a lovely beach, and we loved our suite with an oversized balcony and direct ocean views! My grand parents are from the islands and when we visit them we always stay at this lovely, aloha filled place.
Wonderful Stay at Aston Kaanapali Shores AGAIN!
Thoroughly enjoyed another stay at our favorite Maui hotel in Kaanapali! The staff is representative of the Aloha State and the hotel is so beautiful and well-kept. Kudos to the staff and management at Kaanapali Shores. It's wonderful to be in a hotel that everyone greets you with aloha and is so friendly. We will return very soon! Thank you for another great stay in paradise!
I am writing this review while still on the beautiful Aston Kaanapali Shores property, overlooking the ocean, gardens, waterfalls and pools from our room’s balcony. The grounds and facilities are in pristine shape, measures to prevent Covid contamination are clearly defined and maintained, and the staff is outstanding. We watched the sun set from the resort beach last night and then walked over to the food truck area a few paces down from the property and ate some awesome Thai food. We feel blessed to be here during these challenging times, especially thanks to the warm welcome of Bryan and the management team at the front desk. We were surprised to be given a large box of delicious chocolate covered macadamia nuts in recognition of our anniversary. We were also honored by an upgrade to a spacious 1 bedroom condo with this sweet view. There aren’t many guests here now, due to Covid, but I can feel the vibe of the many special gatherings and events that have occurred here over the years and will continue to take place once tourism has fully returned. Mahalo AKS staff for helping us make our anniversary one to remember.
Old, Run-Down and Overpriced
With the COVID-19 restrictions in-place in Hawai'i, after a 14 day quarantine you can easily move around the islands without restriction. And with almost no tourists here, it's been an opportunity to see and stay in places that normally would be unappealing when jammed with tourists. So we spent several days at two properties on the island of Maui. This was one of them, an aging managed resort filled with 460+ individually owned units. This property was built in 1979-1980 and looks like it. If this were a hotel, it would have had a full rebuild 10 years ago. Some of the problems include: Junk for fit out an fixtures. • Our unit had a bed long past its use-by date; too soft with a valley in the center. • Two unusable electrical outlets in the unit (and very few compared to modern hotels). • Bathroom shower plumbed backwards (fun with the kiddies!) • Bathroom sink tap broken cold water • Bathtub not level • Kitchen tap plumbed backwards (really?) • Wires run on top of the walls instead of inside (apparently trying to get cable-tv and telephone into the units • No plug-ins for USB charging ANYWHERE! • Lamps had 40w bulbs making them unusable for anything but night lights • Only partial set of dishes • 40 year old furniture tired • "Crunchy" carpeting - yuck! • 40 year old balcony door and screens should have been replaced decades ago! • Balcony furniture - no thanks Unit seems mostly dirty from years of marginal maintenance as done much of the property. Elevators seem slow and unsafe. Stairs and tiled floors slippery. The Kaanapali/Lahaina area of Maui is filled with these 1980's units, with owners more interested in trying to break even instead of hoteliers interested in a quality experience. I have stayed away from this kind of accommodation after getting burned like this years ago. I only agreed to this because the REGULAR hotels (Hyatt, Hilton, Marriott) were closed due to the pandemic. These separate-owner hotels also skirt past a loophole and don't offer any rooms for disabled or special-needs guests. This is a shortcoming that needs to be rectified. When things open up again, I'd give places like this a pass. It's expensive to go on vacation and places like this are poor value for anyone.
Christmas in Maui
Great location and amazing views of the ocean. The resort restaurants had great food options and service. They also provided pool side entertainment, mainly live music. The spa services were excellent and the staff were very friendly!
