Review of Unit 140 in Oahu Building via 3rd Party Option

For the record we have not rented directly with the hotel but via AirBnB with the actual owner of this unit - I can see how some units thus can be a hit or miss or how our unit can be completely different from the hotel ones but overall I can tell you that I didn't know that this particular Unit 104 in Oahu Building is inside Aston Islander until we got there - funny enough I would have never considered Aston based on the images/review here and yet the actual unit caught my attention - in the retrospective this was an amazing "resort" and I would totally return as the location is perfect! Location: you about 15 minutes super easy and partially scenic ride north form the LIH airport, facing east for some super nice sunrises (got 2 if not 3), next to the Coconut Market with many restaurants and souvenirs stores within easy and short walk, safe, clean - right on the beachfront, what else one would want? Oh if you plan to explore the island it's probably the best area to do so as we didn't care for the Poipu area, and while Hanalei/Princeville looked very inviting it's far from everything else on the island and here in Kapa'a you are somewhat "centrally" located Grounds: this is a resort with a check in lobby by the parking lot (the owners of the unit ask you to ask for the parking pass that is included in the cost of your stay directly with the hotel lobby/check in team despite "not really staying with the resort" which was a great added bonus as we didn't pay the "resort fees"), the actual buildings have their own names and ours was Oahu, with a partial ocean view and more of a swimming pool view - there is bar there that's probably the only additional portion of the resort other than nicely organized grounds full of plants and cemented pathways for nice morning or evening walks, and yes chickens all roaming around the grounds... they have them on all islands here which is super cool like Caribbean style :) though keep in mind = early wake up calls haha (for the record we had them even in Waikiki in Oahu...) Room: the Unit 140 in Oahu Building is a ground unit with the patio looking towards the swimming pool - we had some meals there and enjoyed it a lot. Inside the A/C was good, modern and not loud, safe included, WiFi great, small fridge, and sink/microwave, the bathroom pretty spacious though the ventilation could have been better and the wet towels started to small pretty fast Beach/pool: we didn't use the pool (there are some bbq/grills for public use as well) but I did spend a few evenings/mornings on the beach taking in the nature, and I actually got to water twice - it's not the most peaceful ocean conditions but you can definitely refresh and for that it worked out perfectly (we didn't go to Hawaii for beaches...) - the fact it was an absolute beachfront and facing east created great conditions for sunrise :) it was cool to see other people there too - with the 5h difference from Chicago time it "didn't take a lot" to wake up early without an alarm to experience a sunrise so consider the time difference while you are traveling as that can work to your benefit here Food options: there is plenttttttttty walking distance, there is also a restaurant right next door beachfront (we didn't try) and hotel itself has a bar by the pool (didn't try either). You can just come here without a car and have a variety of good or great food from various cuisines all within walking distance + the grocery store inside the Coconut Market + many others Thins to do: Smith Family Luau for starters is 5 minutes easy drive, the Kaui Coffee Farm about 45 m drive and a few minutes extra and you are at Port Allen Marina Center where all (well you can do one from Hanalei too though most go from the south) the Na Pali boat tours take off, and of course if you do another 30m you will end up at Waimea Canyon. A day trip to Hanalei area is also recommended - that's probably the nicest/laid back and scenic part of the "touristy Kauai" - the drive to Poipu beach is pretty easy but after visiting once I wasn't blown away by the beach as it wasn't that much less rough as it was here on the Coconut Coast. This is a super easy location to explore the island so take advantage of that. Overall: like I said at the beginning, I have come across Aston Islander here and the pictures didn't catch my heart and perhaps the prices scared me off on top of that, but considering we spend under $200 a night at this place and got what I show on the pictures and what we were able to experience/make out of it I really really enjoyed it and I could see myself return one day to Kauai and still choose this exactly same place - in short it's a great place base to explore the island but also a nice and cozy grounds/area that you can rest and chill doing nothing

    Beautiful View

The resort is lovely...beautiful setting, pool, lots of amenities, plenty of shopping for gifts and groceries within walking distance as well as several restaurants all on the property. There were lounge chairs by the ocean for anyone to use and the pool was lovely even though we did not use it. We had easy access to our room and plenty of free parking available. There were books (free) and DVDs to borrow also. Our room (#232) was oceanfront and the view was breathtaking. we awoke each morning to a beautiful sunrise and roosters crowing. Our room was nicely furnished and very comfortable. We had everything we needed including beach chairs and towels. One drawback to this resort is that some units are owned privately and some are resort owned. If you are staying in a privately owned unit as we did, the front desk is of no help. We had to call our property manager Kevin (who was very helpful and friendly) who had to come from his home to the unit to unlock a special closet to get us a bar of soap. Another reason I did not give a higher rating is because we had to pay a cleaning fee. I think it was $140 but I'm not really sure any longer and the unit was not clean. The important things like the bathroom and kitchen area were clean as were the bedding and towels but it did look like the place has ever been dusted. The baseboards were thick with dust and the grout in the tile floors was very dirty. There were dusty doors and just a feeling that only the essentials were attended too but never a thorough cleaning and dusting. I wouldn't have minded if we hadn't had to pay a cleaning fee but I wonder what the fee was for if the unit isn't cleaned.

    Decent accomodations

Decent place to stay. A little dated but still very comfortable. Our room was ocean front so you couldn't beat the price. Very close to coconut marketplace. Plenty of places to eat there, some shopping & a grocery store. Our room had a kitchenette so we ate breakfast in the room every day. Would definitely stay here again.

    Great place on the ocean

our room was ocean front and it was wonderful. Nice clean room but not huge but that was ok with us. staff were very nice & helpful! Just wish the hot tub was bigger or that there were 2 of them because it was almost always full and we'd have to wait to use it.

    Mediocre hotel at great location

This hotel has rooms that are privately owned and managed by the hotel. It's a strange set up and all rooms are different, for better or for worse. The location of the hotel is it's greatest attribute as it's a beachfront hotel and a short walk to the Coconut Marketplace. When I was there (October 2022) about half of the businesses were open.
