Hotel advisories

Advisory The Dominican Republic imposes various restrictions each year for Easter. They usually begin the Thursday prior to Good Friday and run a few days past Easter Sunday. The following regulations may be enforced: -Motorized water sports may be banned -Non-motorized water sports may be limited or banned -Alcohol consumption may be restricted (most resorts get a permit enabling them to serve alcohol to nonnative people during the ban) -Music may be limited or silenced
Advisory The hotel will renovate 288 rooms with modern designs and high-quality furnishings, enhancing guest comfort. Construction (April 21–Nov 30, 2025) will relocate guests to villas to avoid disruption. Upgrades include pools, restaurants (buffet, Japanese, Grill), lobby, bar, theater, and gym. Affected services will temporarily shift: pools remain open, reception moves to Bouganville, and dining/theater/gym access is redirected. New areas debut Dec 1, with fencing to reduce visual impact.

Honest service from Jose Gilberto , no 182 on the beach

We received excellent services from Jose Gilberto , no 182 for trip over Saona Island. The actual beach at the hotal was bad with alot of seaweeds this season though.

    Avoid at all cost

This hotel is awful. From the staff being unfriendly and only helping if you give a tip, to the food being less than mediocre to the rooms and grounds falling apart . Very disappointed with our entire stay. We voiced our issues and disappointments but the front desk didn't want to hear it. Only offered an upgrade for a substantial fee.

VERY UNPLEASANT FIRST ALL INCLUSIVE FAMILY TRIP

The Bahia Principe Grand - our experience here was okay. WmThis was our first all inclusive and based on what we saw on YouTube we were expecting a very good relaxed stress free experience. To all the guests who had a great time, good for you. What iam going to share here is our experience and we can only speak to what we experienced and how we felt. 1) Our check in took more than an hour. Why? Because the staff at the counter were overwhelmed with a 21 member English only speaking group. Everybody's attention was on this group. The language was a huge problem because the check in staff is not very good in english They speak spanish. Due the difficulty with language, check in was made even worse when it came to checking in the huge group and this is also the reason why most of the staff's attention was on them trying to figure things out. So, we asked another front desk staff who was not part of the staff helping this group if she could help us check in. She reluctantly agreed and we realized that she has only been on this job for four days. Therefore she was extremely slow and robotic in her responses to us. While she was trying to figure things out, i asked another staff why there is so much delay. He looked at us and said, " you are part of the big group , thats why". I said, no we are not, we are a separate family. He said, " You have broken the line, thats why". I was so perplexed as to why this guy just generalized us and responded unjustly. Because of the delay we ended up cancelling our reservation at the ala carte restaurant which we were sooo looking forward to. We said to the person who was helping us check in that we don't have time now to go to the restaurant. Either she understood us or compketey did not understand what we said. Either way, she simply looked at us and said okay. Nothing was done from their side to see if they could help us with the reservation. The check in staff will also hold back information such as access to morning and lunch buffets at two different locations at the resort. The main buffet at the lobby ( smelly place, bad vibes) and there is another buffet right beside the beach ( very very good, friendly staff). 2) OMG - had we known this info, we would have never booked this resort. The staff at check in speaks OK English. They can help with basic check in questions but if we are trying to explain certain situations to them to get help, they are lost or pretend to not know much English. Other than the check in staff none of the other staff at the resort speaks English. They all speak Spanish ONLY. It was soooooo difficult to get around even with basic questions. The staff will immediately say, NO ENGLISH. The language barrier really bothered us because if you are advertising as a resort catering to the world, then you should ensure that the staff soeak atleast basic english so that communication is easy. We were using sign language all the time. 3) Like I said before, the resort is catered mostly towards Latin Americans and if you know a bit of Spanish I guess it will help you. Us being English speakers felt completely out of place when it came to communication. 4) PRIVILEGE CLUB TRAP - There are staff that are part of the privilege club in the lobby who will trick you into going for a two hour presentation during when they will try everything possible to get you to sign up and spend thousands of dollars. My husband was not agreeing to any of their terms and one of the privilege club staff who is the supervisor or something was disrespectful towards us because my husband would not agree no matter what. Very very unpleasant experience for us and we lost precious time. 5) FOOD - Food is not good at all. Tried breakfast, lunch and dinner buffet. Did not enjoy any of them. The only buffet that was good was at the location beside the beach where we had breakfast on the last day before check out. If you are okay with food that is not very flavorful and just want to get by then you will like the buffet. The two ala carte restaurants were not bad. ( Brazilian and indian) compared to the buffet food. I hope you understand. 6) BEACH - Covered in seaweed and a strong fishy smell. Not pleasant at all to spend time at the beach with our kids. 7)ROOM - My jaw dropped when we entered our room not because of how beautiful it was but because of the bad condition of the room. The bedsheets had a stain, the bed base was rusted, the room had a bad smell, the ac made lound thumping sounds all night and we were given a thin sheet as a blanket. We were soo exhausted from our trip, the heat and the long wait at check in that all we could think about was going and eating something. The loud sound from the ac all night and not having a proper blanket really ruined our sleep. The next day, we went to the lobby at 6 am and requested for a room change. The staff told us to come back at 9. We went back again and this time we asked why we were given a room in such bad condition. The staff its because we chose JUNIOR SUITE SUPERIOR as if to say that if we book superior rooms then we should have known that they are all bad. The staff was oretty much saying, its our fault. The truth is that while we were booking, the image of the room that they show on the hotel website is actually JUNIOR SUITE PREMIUM, and NOT SUPERIOR. So we believed what we saw and booked only to lnow later when we arrived that the room that we were going to be given was an outdated bad room. Anyways, after a long we got our room upgraded to premium at 7 pm. 9) POOL PARTY - Again this is all in Spanish. 10) ASKING FOR HELP - This is a huge resort and it is not easy to go to the lobby everytime you have a query. We did try the phone service in our room but it was all in vain. They will say something over the phone only to not follow up and we simply ebded up waiting to gear back from them. So we always went to the lobby whenever we had any questions. 10) PROS - Buffet at the beach, amstar excursions - Amstar staff speaks good English, white party, entertainment shows at night and kids club. This was our first all inclusive trip with our children (4 yrs and 7 yrs) and to be given a room in such a bad condition is absolutely not fair, to not be able to get help from anyone or anywhere other than the lobby is absolutely not acceptable. Our kids were exhaused by the time they reached the room. It was soo hot and humid in the lobby because its an open lobby. We needed rest and relaxation which we did not get the first two days and we were there only for 4 days. This was for sure an experience and a learning curve.

    Problems from checkin forward.

Bahia Principe Grand Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. Vacation in Punta Cana DR, note that mosquitoes are a big problem so you must apply repellent repeatedly. The door was an easy access point due to the separations in the door plus the threshold. When the sun shines into the hallway it really highlights the cracks in the wooden door. The last 3 visits I had an upgraded checking in an air conditioned room where I was greeted with a drink. This time, no drink offered and even thought preregistered I waited in the very slow lines as there seemed to be a lot of confusion about the bookings. While this was my 6th visit to this resort, the staff said there was no record of my staying there in the past so i was not given an upgraded armband. Sent to a room with a king size bed, returned to line to be given another room which was already occupies, assigned another room where the the wristband would not open the door so return once again to have it reprogrammed to be meet with another king bed where I returned to line to request a bed be brought to the room. We had arrived a little after 3pm it was now close to 9pm and we had not eaten and the buffet closed at 10pm. Forgot to mention that they line you up to get into the large carts with guests for 6 or more rooms so it takes a while for this to play out, so you see where the 6 hours passes quickly. Initially the ac fan motor was failing along with the ceiling fan not working and even the fan motor control on the thermostat was also faulty. While initial complaints were ignored with the employees laughing at us, a woman filling in customer service called a maintenance supervisor who contacted worker to repair all the problems noted in just a few hours time frame after 8 days of misery. The supervisor who oversaw the repairs requested a crew of 4 to do a complete cleaning of the room to include replacement of a shear on the patio door that had a hole in it. Physically, the room had many defects to include exposed wires on lighting, damaged tiles, large holes in curtains, tv signal would not display most channels, coffee maker was overflowing at first and then quit, the bathroom was dirty with caulking on every surface, the soap tray coating was eroded away, The dispensers for soap and shampoo did not work, the best way to describe the place was grimy. At least on the 8th day the room was acceptable to the normal standards. Second day, the beach was covered with 3 feet of seaweed blocking access to the beach with a foul order which is an abnormal event rectified somewhat on the third day. Since they tried to put us in an occupied room on the first day, my early check in and dinner reservations were changed requiring me to argue with customer service to reschedule. A La Carte dinner at the Fish House where I expected to have a good variety of seafood, problem was they charged you for any fish. Ordered the chicken breast as I felt ripped off and it was served burnt along with the vegetables, so back to the buffet to get some free fish. The lobby in our building flooded twice overflowing the threshold to enter our room over a 2-day period so returned to the main desk to get the floors mopped. They had already cleaned up the lobby but did not bother to even check the rooms. If you are going to this resort, then be sure to take lots of deet for the mosquitoes and a net so you can sleep and not wake up with bites all over your body. Once you arrive you have no other option but to put up with the misery, or the very expensive option of moving to another resort. It looks like they did not want to go to the expense of spraying or fogging to control insects, After 8 visits to the DR, this is worst problem with bug bites by far. Something else I noticed was the very large amount of locals staying here at the resort, wondering if the word about the conditions has spread and maybe they are discounting to the residents to help fill up the rooms. The locals in large groups would cut in line at the bars and dinners with the servers catering to them. I had done my due diligence before traveling and noticed some similar complaints but thought they were just over exaggerating. The Bahia has its own forum for each site which you would be well advised to review before booking. Note: the 5 stars where you will see 3 ratings in a row which seem surreal Almost forgot to mention the construction adjacent to where we stayed, while very noisy it quieted down after dark. Buffet will not serve coffee at lunch or dinner which was another big surprise to me, so you have to exit to the lobby to access the coffee machines if so inclined. I had to push myself to give this resort a 2 rating where it was always a 4 or 5 in the past. I did not want to forget the buffet breakfast, where my cousin had picked bacon which when she cut it, out pops a chicken bone that the meat had been eaten off then dumped into the tray. We reported this through a waiter and 3 managers show up who talked amongst their self's and with no comment quietly strolled away. This had to have come from the kitchen as no chicken was being served at the time.

The best trip to celebrate my sons graduation.

Everything was on point. We had the best service. Carlos and Ariel were very helpful. The food was great. Our room was very nice. We didn’t spend much time in our room as there was so much to do. We had such a great time that we are going back in Aug.
