    Good place to stay

Clean rooms & reasonably priced. Beautiful view of the beach. The staff were very friendly. The only draw back was the $35 per day parking fee. The ice cream shop had the most amazing "Hawaiian vanilla" ice cream.

Econolodge Quality at Luxury Resort Price

The Royal Lahaina Resort is located on the beach in the Kaanapali planned vacation community. The overall property is in a great location and the resort grounds are very well kept. However, Kaanapali Ocean Inn is an extremely worn and dated hotel (built in the 1960's??) that is located on the Royal Lahaina resort property. This building is a different world than the resort. The room smelled of mildew every time you walked into the room. The cheap wood doors and moldings showed significant splitting and rotting from water damage. The bathroom was worse than the cheapest Econolodge I've ever experienced with a stand up 4'x4' shower of very old and dated ceramic tiles with moldy grout and the bottom of the sliding door rotting with bloated/cracked/water damaged wood. We paid extra to get an oceanfront room which was a blessing as anything but an oceanfront room has no view whatsoever. However, with the supplement for the oceanfront room, we essentially got a tiny deck looking directly at the ocean with views partially blocked by the vegetation that had grown up (halfway through the week the gardeners mercifully trimmed the vegetation at my request). On this trip we stayed at resorts on the Big Island, Kauai, and this resort on Maui. With the resort fees to be on the Royal Lahaina resort, this was the MOST EXPENSIVE room on our trip and certainly the worst quality of the three. Basically an Econolodge in Paradise. Should have paid about 25% of what we did! If you stay at this resort, stay at the high rise Royal Lahaina building which looked very nice with nice amenities. Don't confuse the Kaanapali Ocean Inn with the Kaanapali Beach Hotel which is a beautiful resort in the same planned vacation community!

return to the Royal Lahaina Resort

Location is very nice and quiet part of Lahaina area. We stayed in an upper bungalow with a full kitchen. Full kitchen was a bit exaggerated. It lacked a lot of items to be called a full kitchen. The resort was purchased by a corporation last year and in need of major upgrades. We like our location, but the carpets were filthy and many other things not to our standard of paying $650plus a night.

    Royal? Not so much.

The Royal Lahaina sounds regal doesn’t it? Don’t be fooled by the name. When we first entered the hotel it felt like a typical tropical hotel; open and airy lobby, attentive staff, tropical flowers. We were taken to our room by a very friendly bellhop who opened the door and stepped aside for us to enter. The “royal” feeling came crashing down. My husband summed it up nicely “this place is a dump”. The room had many mahogany accents which were unfortunately covered in an inch of dust including the three slatted doors going out to the lanai. There were several broken handles on drawers, a nightstand drawer that didn’t stay closed, a bathroom sink that did not drain, the teeny tiny bathroom with a single low watt bulb. The hallway often smelled like weed, urine or skunk, not sure which one maybe all three. You are charged $40 per day as a resort fee which gives the privilege of using two towels with the option to pay $150 A DAY for two beach chairs and an umbrella. Tip: stop at Costco and buy a chair for $30 or better yet research as to where you can rent Beach chairs for $3 per day. Not sure how much the cabanas were to rent but nobody was renting any of the beach accessories. There were plenty of lounge chairs around the two lame pools but no shade or umbrellas. There are some redeeming attributes. The easy access to the beach was nice and the restaurant/bar was easy to get seated. The food was expensive but tasted ok. Drinks and bartenders were great. We have heard that there is a scheduled overhaul of the hotel and bungalows in the near future. If this takes place we would consider returning because of the laid back and relaxed atmosphere and perfect location. Otherwise, spend your money elsewhere. I am still waiting for an itemized bill (even though our credit card has been charged) after three requests. Maui is ruggedly beautiful but I would prefer my hotel not to be.

    Unclean and run down room

I paid $4,500 for a five night stay at this hotel, then had to pay $35 for my vehicle a night, and then $75. per person per night on top of the original $4,500. The room was outdated with very stained carpeting, broken drawer in the bathrooms, no windows (only glass louvers with missing pieces). Showers had only hot water and didn't drain so took shower in inches of water. Tub stopper wasn't attached to the wall. Tried to open a screen of a window and it fell on top of me. Two of the chairs at the table were broken and not suitable to sit in. I will be bring anyone back to this hotel or stay here again, when I can have outstanding accommodations at a more modern resort with working hot tubs and pools.
