    Good but not great

This being an all adult resort and at the highest level, I was expecting a bit more. I chose Iberostar Grand Bavaro, because I wanted to experience a child free, beach-front property with less people and good food. Let me break it down. Overview: grounds of the resort are immaculate, manicured, lots of plants and birds. Decor is a bit outdated for overall resort including rooms. Restaurants, and a few common areas, including our rooms have a musty and moldy smell, but all areas are very clean. Food overall was good but we found some things were missing. Beach was clean and combed. We experienced high winds during our stay and the sand would pile up around the loungers which made it hard to find an even surface to enjoy sunshine. Service at restaurants, room, overall throughout the hotel was excellent, and sometimes not. Good ecological initiative with removal of 1 time use plastics, 5 step water filtration, coral lab, less food waste. HOWEVER, having a water hogging golf resort attached and covering most resorts ground and golf course with foreign grasses that need watering completely destroys any green initiatives just due to water waste. Resort decor: lobby is not cohesively decorated. Some sections look like doctor’s wait rooms and other areas have very outdated furniture. Food: Breakfast is probably the best. Most variety and fresh juice. Italian restaurant - not even close to Italian. French restaurant - bisque tasted like salt water, but the duck was super! Also French restaurant has the strongest mold smell of all places I visited. All restaurants had dishes that were either over-salted, unseasoned or very tasty. Not consistent. Desserts were good sometimes and other times too sweet and not good. Best restaurants were Caribbean restaurant by the beach and the main buffet. Room: comfortable bed, pillows, sheets and blankets. Musty and moldy odor present and we had a problem with our A/C unit which was resolved, but took 4 hours out of my afternoon because I physically had to be present in the room. Rooms were cleaned well and restocked daily with fresh towels and water. I would have liked to have a blue tooth speaker in the room to play music and attachments for hair dryer. Entertainment: excellent, the people in entertainment are great performers. Service: we received excellent service everywhere, restaurants, upon check-in, room service, beach service. If you treat people as people and not your “help” they will go above and beyond. Beach: very clean, comfortable loungers. And finally: there are areas on premises that are not highlighted enough and most people who work here dont even know about them: bee area, garden and green area plant propagation, Coral Lab especially!! Shout out to Greg who was on premises at Coral Lab! You are a wealth of information! I wish the hotel group would post more signs to make the lab easier to find on premises and tells guests about it. Iberostar, please promote your green initiatives better! If I have not walked all of the resort, I would have never found the bee area, bird watching area, garden with birds, or the coral lab. One last thing, I do not feel that the value I received matched the amount I spent to stay here. Used the gym facilities once, it was ok, did not use the spa services, but tried to use the spa facilities unfortunately all saunas were shut down due to maintenance issues. Tip: Weekends gets very busy, tip those who provide good/excellent service. Activities that are advertised on premises and website are almost non existent. for those between 20-50 years of age, you will have to look for fun things to do outside the resort. Here people mainly come to sleep, suntan, drink and eat.

    Wish we were still there!

We loved this place!!! We are very sad to be home and not still at the Grand Bavaro! The staff was very friendly and hospitable! Everyone smiles and says “hola!” They were almost too attentive wanting to ensure that you enjoyed your stay. Most know a few words in English, but Spanish is the primary language of the DR. The front clerks and the floor supervisor all speak English well. The food was delicious. We went to 4 of the 5 restaurants. The duck at the French restaurant was amazing! I’d also recommend trying the Dominican restaurant. We totally missed having fresh fruit, an omelette or crepe made to order, and fruit water waiting for us for breakfast this morning. We were spoiled having someone make your breakfast (and lunch, snacks, dinner, and drinks) for you. The beach was gorgeous! We walked a half mile in either direction each day. There were plenty of cushion lounge chairs under huts. The pool had very nice cabanas or lounge chairs, a few were in the pool. There was also a swim up bar. The grounds were beautiful and well groomed! They also have CATS!!!! We counted 9 in total. Three of them let us pet them. Let me say, we love cats so this was a big bonus for us as we had lost our cat in November. The rooms are quite nice. It’s worth the money for the lake or ocean view. We did spend one night in a room with 2 “twin” beds. They are really more a full sized bed and can sleep 2 comfortably, but then we were able to move to a room with a king sized bed. The tubs are whirlpool and surrounded by windows. Luckily there are blinds, unless you want to let folks walking on the paths see you in the bathroom. My husband enjoyed a cup of coffee on the balcony every morning. There’s a well stocked, free, mini bar. Drinks are included but the “top-tier” alcohol does cost a bit extra. We went on an excursion to do whale watching, then a horseback ride to the top of a 275 “staircase” cut into the side of the hill, to a gorgeous waterfall. We really enjoyed it but you should know that we also spent 6 hours on the bus - 3 getting to the boat and 3 on the way back, plus another ~1.5-2 hours on another transport to get to the place with the horses. It was still worth it but it was a 13 hour day that started with a 6 am pick up as the Iberostar was the first and last stop. This did mean we got up at 5 am. We ordered from the 24 hour room service and they provided us a with a good breakfast. As it was spring break, we were very happy with our more expensive, adult only choice of a place. The majority of the guests were married couples, many having been married for 20-40 years. It was a more relaxed, accepting kind of crowd. It was perfect!

    Okay Place with Nice Beach

We recently enjoyed a week at the Grand Bavaro in room 7235. It is a nice 3 star resort that was busy but not crowded. Strong Points: It has very nice physical layout, and the grounds are very well maintained. There is a nice pool complex and beach with plenty of cabanas and lounge chairs. The staff is universally friendly. The restaurants and the food are a huge strength, with varied menus and excellent service. The check-in and check-out were smooth. Low points: The room needs updating and maintenance has suffered. No USB ports, only one electrical outlet for charging, no alarm clock, some jets in the Jacuzzi broken, dirty curtains in the bathroom, the tile floors are very slippery when wet, the TV remote didn’t work. The butler was good at doing routine things like making dining reservations, but simple requests like getting Diet Coke in the fridge and getting the ceiling fan adjusted never got done. No one knew which of the unmarked coffee cartridges were regular or decaf. It was a big deal to get a list of channels for the TV and no one knew if the NFL playoffs would be televised in the room. Most days we had good maid service 2 or 3 times a day, but one day we were skipped entirely. Next time we go to Punta Cana, we’ll go elsewhere.

We could not have been happier!

My husband and I went to our first Iberostar to celebrate our 10th anniversary, and we could not have chosen better. From the moment we arrived, we were treated like royalty. We were greeted by "our" concierge, Eliezer, who could not have been more helpful and gracious. No sooner had we been escorted to our gorgeous room, with the private deck overlooking the extremely well maintained grounds, then our butler, Jose, arrived to give us the short list of all the things a hotel butler can do for us, from dinner reservations, to booking massages, to specific mini bar requests. (Ask for Jose, you won't regret it.) If you are a pool person, you will love the pools, with the games, activities, and mini bar. If you are a beach person, enjoy the grass umbrellas and beachside wait service. If you are a golf person, the course is beautiful and challenging. If you like excursions, there are several available to get you off the property (although we tried a couple of beach trips, and why? the resort has the best one). You can walk for miles along the beach. When you dine, look for Yari, the consummate hostess at breakfast and dinner, and keep an eye open for Lorraine, Iris, and Samuel. The buffets are extensive, fresh and amazing, with something for absolutely everyone. The restaurants, we found, were often not as good as the dinner buffet, with the exception of Casa de la Playa, which serves Dominican food every night. For a romantic splurge, have the "romantic dinner" on the beach -- it's like starring in your own romance movie, right down to live smooth jazz in the background. Even the housekeeping staff are friendly, considerate, and went out of their way to make every moment of our stay wonderful (I mean you, Silvana). There is no question that we will return. We have a new version of paradise.

    Best Butler Ever!!

The trip was great, but what made it amazing was our Butler Robert. He is friendly, knowledgeable, attentive and a wonderful personality. Robert clearly understands the value of Hospitality and the importance of people enjoying their vacation. Robert made it a PERFECT VACATION!
