Honeymoon Stay
I stayed at Secrets Papagayo for a week on our honeymoon. We had a wonderful vacation. I will say that we met other honeymooners in their 20-30s, but most of the resort guests were 55+. This is not a party resort, and was very quiet with minimal activities or night life. Great for relaxing, if that is the vacation you are looking for! We booked some tours through Amstar at the resort, but found Frank the Tank tours to be cheaper and more enjoyable. We also booked our airport transportation through Amstar through the resort. The shuttle did not show up for our early morning return and we had to taxi. You can/should also book airport transport with Frank the Tank and not Amstar. The resort is clean, and the staff is beyond amazing! A few takeaways: Make sure you are on top of the staff with dietary restrictions and allergies. 3 of 6 of our dinners on site, we told the staff my husband has a broccoli allergy and he was served broccoli with the entree vegetables. Usually the vegetarian option was fish, so if you are not pescatarian, again be on top of the staff with that. While our room was clean, we had a lot of dead ants. We brought this up to guest services and they offered to spray the room. This did not prevent ants from getting in, but killed them. Every morning when we got up, there were new ants. Housekeeping cleaned them up every day too! We received $200 in VIP credits at check in, but were never able to use them. We were only given the runaround when we tried. They were specifically for the romantic dinner, spa, and bottles of wine.

Costa Rica
Secrets Papagayo Costa Rica is a very nice and relaxing resort. This place is definitely for those who wish to chill and relax. I will definitely visit again. The drinks and food was good and the staff was very friendly.

Recent visit was amazing.
We had a fantastic time during our week stay at this resort. We were definitely pampered by Marco, Ingrid, Bismarc and Gary and Kevin was always there to say hello and entertain us. We loved the black sand and the jetski excursion from Jorge’s in the beach. Would recommend this resort.

Excellent vacation but very different Secrets experience compared to other Secret properties. This is a much more laid back resort that is very spread out. We personally enjoyed that but, understand that others may have found this hard to navigate due to the property being very hilly. The grounds were exceptionally cared for and the staff were amazing and always willing to help to ensure a great vacation. Diego at Amstar was a rock star when it came to his recommendations on excursions.

A fair 4 star resort
I’ve been to a lot of 5 star all inclusive resorts and this is not one of them. This resort rates a 4 star maximum. Overall stay, had good food, good service and our room location was excellent. Bad side, Room cleaning, especially after covid, left little to be desired and needed to be called back to complete multiple times. They cleaned room without mask or gloves.. Prime pool and grill location had washrooms nearby and the septic smell was terrible. Coffee not available until 6:30 am. No self serve coffee stand available. Must wait or make your own in your room… Mini bar for preferred club room was pitiful with 3 beers, 3 cans of coke and a water. Preferred club check in process terrible. No arrival greeting with wet cold towels, and no drink. Had to finally ask for water. Check out also an issue. They told us we had a $200 credit on our account, but again, this did not happen. Instead they gave me a book of coupons worth $200 US that could never be used..strange. We used the spa several times and the massage was good. Location and set up good, but fails at 5 star. Overall, preferred club price increase definitely not worth it. Staff very friendly and does not appear to have a staff shortage, yet you keep asking yourself, where’s the meat. Outstanding staff was Cristian waiter from Hymtsu restaurant And Johan and Braulio were very hard workers at the pool and beach cleanup/maintenance. Don’t know who was responsible for the septic issue. Overall 7/10. There are many real 5 star resorts than to duplicate a trip at this location.
