Jamaica - Secrets Wild Orchid
We stayed at Secrets Wild Orchid in an ocean view preferred suite (1316) Wild Orchid shares amenities with Secrets St James. It is closer to the majority of the restaurants and entertainment. We loved the preferred beach and pool as it was quieter than the main beach and pool. The room was clean, spacious and comfortable and we spent a lot of time on the balcony. The preferred club also had its own bar setup and breakfast bar. The food was delicious and presented well. Drinks were good and they weren’t pushy. Masks need to be worn indoors unless eating. Tables were sanitized in front of you (it made some tables really sticky) and you could not serve yourself in the buffet. Tip: if you don’t want to wait - be at the restaurants when they open. The staff was friendly and efficient. A few things to note - there was no place to get snacks - cookies, ice cream etc. and room service was from 7am - 10:30 pm and took about 90 minutes. Only 3 restaurants were open each night, a couple (asian, steakhouse) were not open at all. Our airport transfer was through Best Jamaica - they were punctual and accommodating. We also did one excursion with them - Luminous Lagoon - very cool. We took a taxi to Hip Strip (about 5 miles) one day - $60 RT and waiting for us about 1 hour. Smoking is allowed on balcony - an ashtray was provided. We smoked cannabis and were not bothered. Overall it was a great trip and very relaxing. FYI - we were told that RCI would contact us re coupons - they never did (doubt we would have used them). COVID testing for return flight was done on-site. It was the rapid test and was quick and easy with results emailed to you later the same day. SMILE!
We were 12 people on vacation expecting preferred status as stated by RCI and UVC . No preferred status until I complained . Only 3 restaurants open of the 9-11 is unacceptable . Musty smell in room never taken care of all week . I kept getting my boss said no , do you want to become a member . Why would I want to become a member . No reservations at restaurants so 1 to 2 hour wait every night for dinner . I’m sure they will say Covid but something is array at wild orchid . Hoping it gets better
Property was a 4.5-5, but service makes it a 3
NOTE: As our point of reference, we have stayed at 8-9 other Secrets locations, as well as several of their sister resorts, Zoetry, Dreams and Now. It is hard to write a negative review about a property and location that is absolutely stunning. However, while we had a lovely time on our first vacation in nearly a year (thank you, Covid!), our stay was not really positive. That said, let me start with the pluses - as mentioned, the resort and area are both beautiful. The rooms, the pools, the beach, the views, all top notch. Some of the employees were the friendliest and most professional we have encountered anywhere. Shantal, in the preferred club, kicked off our stay in the very best way, and she continued to be a bright spot in our stay for the entire week. We simply can't say enough good about her. She was incredible. Likewise, Kenton, the butler for our preferred room, kept a smile on our faces and went over and above to make our stay positive in every way he could. He had a unique combination of a laid back vibe and friendly professionalism that made him feel like an old friend at the same time he was providing wonderful service. He has a gift of hospitality that is rare. While food was hit or miss, we had some delicious dinners and great service in some of the restaurants. Our very favorite, for food quality and great service, was Bordeaux. In fact, we made a point to find the restaurant manager (I can't remember his name) to compliment him on both. Ingrid and Kimberly were our servers and again, we can't compliment them enough. Fish Nets (at Breathless) was probably our second favorite restaurant - the fish fingers and fried snapper were both delicious. AND service was exceptional there, from start to finish. Takesha and Treena deserve special kudos for the service they provided! Blue Mountain provided a unique experience in its offering of Jamaican fare, and we enjoyed it. Our server (Pat???) was very good, friendly, professional and offered great suggestions. I'd have never guessed I would order, much less enjoy, oxtails, but I did! Two other employees who deserve shout outs, but unfortunately I didn't get their names: the young lady with long braids who manned the towel cart at the preferred pool most of the week. While it was obviously not her job, she spent countless hours helping the lone server at the preferred pool (the other employee who did an amazing job), and often came to our patio to see if she could get anything for us. That's where I'll begin the negatives - did you catch that there was ONE server for the entire preferred pool? That was simply not something we've ever seen at a Secrets, and while she did her best, one server can't handle that entire area. As if that wasn't enough, she was also having to MAKE the drinks in the bar in that area for several days. So...yes, she was the lone server AND the bartender for the entire preferred area. Imagine the wait time at poolside and in the bar when this was the case. Like this instance, many complaints we had regarding our stay were due to understaffing. But not all were for this reason...two restaurants were closed for renovations...completely closed...following an almost year-long shutdown due to Covid. It seemed to us that would have been the perfect time for renovations in order to provide every option available to visitors once Covid was over. Not. The. Case. In fairness, maybe there were legalities of the shutdown that prevented this, but it seemed odd timing. Secrets properties always rotate which restaurants are open on any given night, but the fact two were closed meant more limitations on restaurants to choose from. While the food in El Patio was okay, the service was awful. Or probably that is unfair since we were greeted and seated in a quick and professional manner. But that is where the good service stopped. Our server was rude, not just a little rude, but "refused to speak to us for the entire meal" rude. Once when my husband asked a direct question about a recommendation and she was forced to speak, she answered with ONE WORD. That was the extent of her interaction with us. It became laughable as we watched her treat every table in this manner. I do wish I would have gotten her name, but remember...she didn't speak so I have no idea what it was...because the service was so bad that I would point her out for it. Food at Oceana and Portofino were fine - nothing overly special, but fine - and the service in both was good! When we started traveling to Secrets properties, it was because my husband spent hours researching locations with good food and premium booze. Let's just leave it simply with the premium booze was non-existent on this property. I could give lots of examples, but I think that covers it, and we visited with dozens of other guests who had the same complaint. In fact, we visited with dozens of other guests who had the same complaints about everything I've mentioned including the lack of good, or even passable, booze. While the grounds were well maintained, it was not uncommon for several of the maintenance employees to gather right beside our patio to (loudly) visit with each other, talk on the phone, etc. They mowed and trimmed for the majority of one day right beside our patio. We realize, and even commented, that this obviously has to be done at some point during the day, but it took an unusually long time, and the incredibly loud conversations were so bad that my husband finally went to one of them and asked they move away from our patio. Ok, I'll stop there as I believe it gives the general idea. Most of my reviews point out the positives of a location; however, in this case, we wish we had known this information so we could have either chosen a different location or gone with appropriate expectations. All of that said, the property is beautiful. Our room was incredible. The service from some of the staff was out of this world. And once they are fully staffed again, who knows, maybe it will be a 5. Unfortunately, we probably won't travel back to find out.
Incredible Time In Montego Bay
My wife and I had an incredible time at Wild Orchid. Having access to several restaurants on different properties was very nice. The staff were very courteous and professional and were readily available. Entertainment staff put on some amazing shows and were always around the property as the entertainment crew..Starlight was always full of smiles and energy.
Room for improvement
As recent 7-night guests of the above, all-inclusive vacation property, we would like to share our feedback and review of our experiences while vacationing at Secrets St. James and Wild Orchid, Montego Bay. We chose this resort based upon the reviews on both CheapCaribbean and TripAdvisor and recall the views being dated from a year ago. While we are not travel experts or professionals, before detailing our experiences, it should be known that we are frequent vacationers and travelers for both pleasure and business alike and have many experiences to compare to this experience as the basis of our judgements. This was our third vacation to Jamaica. Prior to arriving to the resort, we expected Covid-19 Safety protocols to be in place and were more than willing to adhere to the expectations. We booked our travel through Cheap Caribbean and that experience was very seamless and their customer service was prompt, friendly and answered all of our questions. The onsite tour operators/airport transfers, Amstar, were friendly, prompt and very helpful both at the airport in Montego Bay and in the hotel. Upon arrival to the hotel, we checked in and were quickly passed off to a sales presentation for the Time-share/Vacation-share Sales Pitch and was offered “free dinner”, and were pressured within the first hour to schedule a meeting with one of the sales people. As previous experiences have taught us, we respectfully declined their invitation. Time-share/vacation-share options are not of interest to us and we did not want to spend 4-5 hours of our vacation under pressure. We prefer to visit many locations throughout the world and not be tied to a few places. This is our personal preference and we prefer NOT to be pressured while on vacation. As far as the resort itself is concerned we left with the following observations: Staff friendliness: for the most part, the staff is friendly and willing to make your stay and easy, comfortable and as pleasurable as possible. Omar, Marlando at the pool bar are fantastic and bend over backwards to serve you in a timely manner and accommodate any cocktail creation you can think of and even offer some of their own! Rancine in housekeeping was very attentive. Resort Cleanliness: for the most part the resort is well-kept. It seemed the groundskeepers were working diligently while we were there to bring the grounds back up to par after being closed during the worst of the pandemic. The pool bar did, however, have mold growing under the ledge on the St. James side. This is not very appetizing for lingering. Our room was clean. The beach had some trash floating in the water one day and we were the ones who collected it from the beach. A wetsuit washed up and was lying along the rocks most of the day. ATM: Because we needed extra cash for tipping, we tried to utilize the ATM machine but it was out of service for an entire day. When we reported the issue to the front desk, we were told, “it’s not our machine. There is nothing we can do. We can offer a cash advance on your credit card for a 10% fee.” Really? Even when the machine is down? We needed the cash to tip THEIR staff in a timely manner. If you go, I suggest bringing plenty of your own cash, or else you will be paying the resort itself extra money, not their staff. At the end of the day, around dinner time, the machine was finally repaired and working again. Spa: Fantastic massage. Prompt, professional service. $200 for an 80 minute massage. The price was not reduced even though due to COVID, the relaxation pool, sauna and steam rooms were not available for use. It seems that when the original charge for a service includes the extra amenities and they are not available, a reduction in price would also be warranted. However, that was not the case. Restaurants and Food Service: This is the area of most concern and disappointment. The Coco Cafe, in the mornings, did not have enough staff to accommodate the usual long lines for “Starbucks-like” coffee concoctions. One young lady usually worked alone as the line grew 10-15 people deep, every day. On the day before we left, she had help from a manager on duty, when the line became approximately 20 people deep. Likewise, the lines for the restaurants in the evening were also long. For the number of guests staying at the resort, combined with seating limitations due to Covid, only having 3 options for dinner was not enough to accommodate everyone in a timely manner. The tablet in the room with the daily schedule and restaurant availability was not always accurate. The tablet may indicate a certain restaurant is open for dinner and when you arrive, dressed for that particular restaurant, anticipating that particular food, only to discover it is closed. Guests were often provided with “buzzers” and a “wait-time” for dinner. One evening we waited more than an hour to be seated. Everyone we talked with seemed frustrated to have to wait. The Ocean seafood restaurant was closed every night due to construction, so there was not a seafood restaurant option unless we left the resort and paid additional money. Other restaurants did offer a fish dish or two on the menu. The proportions were very small at all the restaurants except the buffet. My husband most often ordered two entrees for dinner in order to feel satisfied. The food itself was good. Only one beachside grill was open for food and the line was always long there as well. The day we arrived we ordered room service and waited approximately 90 minutes for delivery. This was not a great first impression. Our second room service request, pizza and a salad, took just over 30 minutes to arrive, on our last evening, so perhaps the word was getting out and back to the management. The “secret box” each room is used to request drinks for the in-room refrigerator. The refrigerators are not automatically, and when the beverages arrive, they arrive warm and we had to stock the fridge. This wasn’t the end of the world, but when you’d like a cold beverage, you had to plan ahead to prepare enough time to chill it. If you wanted a “cold one” upon arrival, it would have had to be ordered from room service, which could take a bit to arrive. When frustrated with the service and food selection at Secrets, we ventured over to Breathless for a change of scenery. We enjoyed fantastic service and food a few times both on the rooftop as well as for breakfast at the buffet. Then, out of nowhere, on our way to visit the restaurant a fourth time, we were told we could not enter and that we would have to pay an up charge. The Secrets staff didn’t even know whether or not we were “allowed” in or not. Entertainment: Great, entertaining, funny, engaging, talented. Summary: It is our understanding, from talking to other guests who have spent other vacations with the Secrets organization, that our experience is not typical and they agreed with our observations. We were told Secrets St. James and Wild Orchid were sub-par compared to other Secrets properties. Since this is our first and only experience, we will not recommend this property to others and probably will not return to a Secrets property and were disappointed in the value for the money we spent for a much-needed, post-vaccine vacation.
