    Royalton is going downhill

We booked directly with the hotel online and our transfer was included. Checking in at the airport was effortless and we went directly to our transfer. We had to drop off passengers at the Royalton Bavaro prior to our stop, but did not take long and was right around the corner. Once we got to the resort we were taken to the lounge to check in as we were Diamond Club guests. We were greeted by the head of the butler staff who directed us to the snacks and drinks. We finally got our welcome drink which did not contain any alcohol, which I thought was strange. It was up to us after to request a drink of our choice, which we had no idea what to order basically waiting for them to offer their signature alcohol drink or drink of the day. We were not offered either. Our Butler Christian came and he took us on a miniature tour on the way to our room. We set up WhatsApp for our group of 3 so he could communicate with us. He stated that he would make our dinner reservations for us but the first night we went to the buffet. The first night at the buffet there was not much to choose from that we liked and we were tired from the long travel so we grabbed some food and went back to the room to relax. The next day we went back to the buffet for breakfast about 930am and it was jammed packed. Most of the food had been picked over and there were people everywhere. It was way too crowded. We happened to see the butler afterwards and he explained that people from the other Royalton come over as this is the best place for breakfast. Little did we know at the time that this was the only place to get an actual breakfast meal on the resort except for room service. The butler told us that he made reservations for us that night at the seafood restaurant for that evening. We were told it was at the Royalton Splash so we hopped on the trolley to head over. That restaurant was the worst. Our reservation was at 730pm and we did not get our food until 9pm. The food was terrible. Daughter and I ordered the chicken breast while husband ordered the fish and pigeon peas which he stated was okay but definitely needed seasoning. The chicken was not seasoned so we asked for some hot sauce and the waitress actually came back with literally a drop left and said that was all that they had. See picture below. So what were we supposed to do with that? I ordered the salad that was supposed to be loaded with cucumbers, carrots, onions, etc with a choice of shrimp or chicken and this is what the waitress brought me. There was absolutely nothing on this salad. This was a total disappointment. We could not wait to get back to the room to order room service. We got back to the room and ordered pizza which was just okay but much better than that horrible Under the Sea restaurant. The next morning we ordered room service and must say was surprised that everything that we ordered was there and it only took 30 minutes. Very pleased with that service. The next night we were not going to go back to the Royalton Splash as we had reservations for the Mexican Restaurant. We decided that we would just grab something at the sports bar because we wanted to be close for the entertainment. Another mistake. First of all we went in and there was no air conditioning. We were told to sit anywhere. They only had empty tables with dirty dishes on them. We patiently waited for them to clear a table but they did not seem to be in a hurry. We looked around and saw that no one was eating and we could tell the service was slow so we decided to leave. We went back to the buffet for dinner. The food was okay but nothing to brag about. We were happy to go and see what the entertainment was all about. We went up to the White Night and there were plenty of people and it looked like everyone was having a good time. The place was crowded and of course there were not any seats so we were not going to stay long. Back to the room we went. The next morning we decided to try the buffet for breakfast again only this time we went about 830 and the choices were better but it was packed as before. This is definitely a turn off and thankfully this was our last full day and we were excited about spending the day at the beach. Husband went out earlier and got a good spot so we were ready to enjoy the day. The waitstaff on the beach was very attentive just as the pool area but I would say the Diamond beach area staff was more attentive to our needs until we ordered food as we saw other guests order. We waited about 40 minutes when another waitstaff came to clarify our order and said it would be 30 minutes. 90 minutes later we had no food and got up and left to head to the buffet before it closed. We just grabbed a bite because luckily we had reservations for 630pm at the Hibachi restaurant which turned out to the best food that we had on the resort. We normally spend 5 to 7 nights at resorts as we travel extensively. I was truly glad that we only spend 4 nights here. Diamond Club is a joke. This is our 3rd Royalton. Jamaica and Grenada were our first and much better. Other Royalton rooms that we stayed in with Diamond club status, we had liquor in the rooms. Nothing but beer, water and juice in ours and the only thing that was replenished was water. The diamond club lounges were much better and had way better food. The butlers did do more than what our butler Christian did. We never heard from him and he was a waste. We could have made our own reservations as that is all that he did. I did ask him about the snacks in the room and he explained they were part of the welcome package and they were not replenished but our last night there he managed to replenish which we did appreciate. Butler service is non-existent at this resort. We have traveled to other brands like Secrets and Sandals and know what butler service entails and Royalton does not have true butler service. This resort is beautiful and immaculate. People are friendly and rooms are great, but I would not recommend it to anyone because with the 3 resorts basically in one it is too crowded and with that being said it shows that the employees are probably overworked and this makes service subpar. I would rate it as a 2 out of 5 and definitely will not be back and will not support Royalton anymore.

Diamond club is not very shiny

Lower. Your. Expectations. If are looking for a luxury, concierge experience, this is not the place for you. Diamond club is not as exclusive as they would have you believe. 10am- no towels left at the towel shack. 6pm, 1st seating at dinner- they only have 5 menus for a party of 11, you’ll have to share. First night here- no dinner reservations, you had to make a reservation yesterday. Want to order their dinner special-oops sorry, we don’t have that tonight. Need room service at 7am before an excursion- we are too busy at that time, you’ll have to go to the buffet instead. It was disappointment after disappointment for a solid 2 days until we lowered our standards. We’ve traveled concierge level before and it was COMPLETELY different (in a good way). On the plus side, the hotel is very clean, pools were not super crowded, and the nightly shows were decent entertainment. Our butler Antonio did his best with what he had and what we asked. He was polite, pleasant and accommodating, but the resort’s resources just couldn’t accommodate our needs overall. And if they offer or promote a resort “credit,” be warned that this is nothing but a coupon book for 15 different resort services that will cost you extra money. Otherwise it’s useless. Unless you are interested in listening to their timeshare speech- if you do, then you can get a discount on an excursion booked through them. I cannot recommend this resort in good conscience. I won’t be back.

Great place but a few little amends needed

Nice resort, however a few things that need sorting are as follows. 1 - not enough sun loungers on the beach, guests from the splash and the actual resort mean that demand out weighs supply, need to get there at 8am to guarantee a lounger. 2- most of the cardio machines in the gym not working. Also too small and gets rammed in the am meaning that you are working out in the PM at the hottest part of the day (air con not great) 3- booking restaurants is a nightmare, using the app and it’s always booked up. Luckily the room Butler managed to get us in, when he did the place was half empty so something definitely wrong with the app. 4- front of house staff at the Hunters and Jade restaurants are full of attitude, not helpful And quite frankly rude!! On a major plus side the holiday was made a lot easier and rescued by out room butler Romeo. He was first class and helped us loads. Without him the holiday would not have been as enjoyable. The resort itself is lovely, clean, well Maintained and in a fantastic location. Just a few little bits to sort and this would be perfect.

    Great 2 weeks away

Me and my family had a great 2 weeks at the resort and it was made all that much better by Romeo, he was amazing, so nice helpful and just an all round great person. He made eating at all the delicious a la carte restaurants a breeze as we didn’t have to worry about booking as romeo did all of that for us. Would highly recommend

Overall great experience, beware of sales pitch!

This review is not to complain about the resort per se, it’s more to make people aware of the expectations of the place. My family and I stayed at the Royalton Resort & Casino for a week to celebrate my son’s birthday. Upon check in we were informed that the restaurant buffet closed at 3 pm and didn’t open again until 6:00 pm. We also had to have a reservation the day prior to assist to any one of their restaurants on site. We found that very inconvenient since the check in time is not until 3 pm and after a long day of traveling with kids all we want to do is drop bags and go eat. They did say that there was a food cart open until 5 but when we went they didn’t have food anymore. Thankfully after asking around we were told about this sports bar that was still open and we could take our kids for a bite just to be startled every so often with the screams and celebrations of people watching a sporting event. (Nothing against those people, that is what the place is for but unfortunately that was the only place where we could eat at that time) Then my kids wanted to take a swim but found out the towels were not being distributed after 5:00 pm and the pools close at 7:00 pm. In my opinion they close way too early compared to other places where we’ve stayed. Our problem was not with the somewhat stringent rules that we were more than happy to follow, but with the lack of clear information ahead of time to make proper decisions. Overall, the facilities are gorgeous, very well maintained, the service was excellent from some people, but others notoriously lowered their standards of service once they noticed we spoke Spanish too. I don’t know if they feel we are not worthy of their excellence in service if we are from another Latin American country. The food choices are endless, there’s something for everyone and every palate. If you are an introvert and get overwhelmed by so many people all around you, this is not a place for you. Breakfast time was a beehive of people crossing your path every couple of inches, or invading your personal space, or just flat out pushing you aside to get food. So many people from so many different countries and levels of proper manners are noticeable specially at breakfast time. The part that was annoying the most is the concierges trying to sell you their platinum membership every-single-morning on your way out to breakfast. They station their desks just at the entrance of the building so you have to interact with them forcefully. We have nothing against them because at the end of the day they are just doing their job and making an honest living but heir speech was filled with guilt tripping and the level of insistence and peskiness that they showed just made every interaction awkward and uncomfortable. We heard from other guests that they don’t actually make a salary but get incentives from the people that accept to have the “speech” given and that the amount was around $130 dollars for every family they send. We would be more than happy to pay a “no sales pitch fee” of around $100 dollars If they can still make a living without bothering us and still provide an excellent service. Otherwise I think the overall experience was great, excellent value for your buck for a sales pitch free family vacation. You must NOT miss visiting GRAZIE Italian restaurant and Hunter Steakhouse. Best of them all!!
