Stay for a night to enjoy Renaissance Island
We stayed two nights to visit Renaissance Island and downtown. Both our rooms were clean and modern, and the common areas were well kept too. The island was great with calm waters and flamingos strolling all day. The family side (iguana beach) isn’t quite as nice as the adult side though. Staff at the beach were great and go early to get a chair with shade. Floats, snorkel masks, hammocks, towels were all provided. (Paddle boards and kayaks were never available due to wind and not sure there was a good area to use them anyway). Callum was our boat driver twice and he made both trips fun. The boat process is a bit frustrating though as each boat only holds about 20 people and staff saves spots for employees that arrive late. So you wait 15 minutes for a boat only to have 3-4 families allowed on. They need more boats at peak times or boats from each hotel (they currently share boats). Be prepared to wait about 30 minutes for a boat to the island. We enjoyed our stay but next time would only stay one night before moving to Palm Beach. This was a great hotel but we prefer beachfront at Palm Beach. Tips: - Bring quarters for flamingo food - Catch boat to island at marina hotel (it picks up first so you are more likely to get on and is a cooler ride out) - Dutch Pancake House (in mall) serves a great breakfast - Convenience store in mall is reasonable spot to grab drinks or snacks. -West Deck is an easy walk from hotel and has good food at a reasonable price right on the beach - Ride on right side to island and left side from island to improve chances of staying dry

Loved meeting Mena!
The trip was amazing, the Flamingo island experience was definitely one of a kind and the hotel and food was amazing. However, this review is long overdue, but I want to take a moment to recognize a specific individual from the Sol swim up bar and restaurant area. We met Jimena "Mena" the first night we arrived at the hotel- not only is she great at her job, but this lovely lady is probably the most loving person we've ever met on a vacation (and my girl's make friends everywhere we go). She and the girls would run to each other and exchange hugs everyday, and on the last day they exchanged gifts. She took care of us for every meal that we had out on the patio and would take a moment to simply say hello and ask the girls about their newest adventures for the day if we were only passing through. She's passionate about her job and simply loves people. She is a top reason we would consider coming back. The Renaissance definitely picked a winner when they hired her!

Great employees named
I waited a long time to check in & when I had questions (sometimes) Housekeeping did an excellent job. But I was not informed at check that they would in fact clean every day (not true in USA anymore) Traveling alone customer service is even more crucial When I asked the concierge for help I was given wring answers. I waited at the front desk again & got better help. I was not sure about this stay. Then I visited Flamingo Beach. There I was lucky to meet , Natalia, Maria and Andrew. These friendly helpful folks made me feel welcome. What wonderful & valuable employees to your resort! I was disappointed in the appearance of the hotel ground in some places. Though the hotel itself was clean & beautiful. I was also disappointed that the pool & pool bar closed so early. I wanted badly to see the flamingos I did that immediately & was happy. I didn’t realize until arrival that this is not a destination set up for solo travelers. But I met kind people & did my best to enjoy. Again, Natalia, Maria & Andrew, & made the adventure so much better on Renaissance Island!

A one-of-a-kind sort of experience
We almost didn't book this hotel because when we looked at it on the map, it seemed like there was no ocean/beach and it seemed isolated. Thank goodness we looked into it more closely and realized that it has the whole private island as part of the hotel. Having access to Renaissance Island was the highlight of the stay. The boat ride is only 6-7 minutes and there are boats every 15 minutes. The hotel itself has an adults-only side and an family side and while we didn't think it was that big of a deal, it ended up being a true bonus. My kids are in their 20's and my daughter and I were there for a beach vacation and not having kids around was kind of nice. Even on the island, there is an adults-only lagoon and then the family lagoon - so great to have a choice. The island's flamingos walk around all day and hang out in various spots on the beach and in the water and it's so much fun to interact with them. There are colorful fish to see in the little streams and while snorkeling in the lagoons. The iguanas have their own area for feeding and the size and variety is amazing. There are plenty of palapas and palm trees for shade, but you do need to get there in the 9am-range to get a chair in the shade. We would have loved to have rented one of the overwater cabanas, but there are so few of them, they sell out very quickly. They have snorkels/masks, and those do run out, but then people start returning them so you can get them in the afternoon. We thought the room was spacious and comfortable. The bed was very comfortable and there was plenty of counter space in the bathroom. We thought the service was very good - check-in was fairly quick, the bell staff were super nice, and the concierge was helpful. On the island, the bar staff and servers were incredible, as they were practically running to accommodate all the food and drink orders and they were fabulous about checking on us throughout the day. There were different menus at each of the lagoons, so there was a great variety of food and it was all fresh and delicious. The location in the city is so close to the airport and has all the fun little restaurants along the dock and doesn't feel touristy at all. The only tiny issue we had with the actual hotel was that there was no luggage rack in the bedroom and almost no where to hang wet clothes and swim suits.
