Our Third Time
My young adult daughter and I have stayed at Cabana Bay Beach Resort now 3X. That’s because why fool with what’s perfect for us - we know we will love our time there. We have been for 2 Christmas weeks and now a September week. It’s upscale, immaculate, and a full resort for a budget price. It has a cafeteria which is a huge benefit as far as cost and for years the Fresh Tuna Bowl = an all time favorite. Always delicious and grilled in front of you. We have visited the Universal Parks 2X and this time just relaxed at the hotel and visited Aquatica Water Park. The room is always comfortable and we pick the Volcano Bay view. Room cleaning service is excellent and we had an immediate delivery of extra bathroom supplies when I called the front desk. The Hideaway Grill at the pool also excellent - the freshest french fries. Just love it - everyone so nice and helpful. The pool is huge and has a beach area. The lazy river is a big favorite with most guests bringing water tubes to float - apparently we are not the only repeat guests. It has a goodwill vibe that is contagious and I plan on keeping that here back at home.
Don’t tell someone they are booked over the phone , then when they come half way across the country at 1AM to check in, you tell them you don’t have the room and messed up. They said they would put us in a better room the 1 st night. I told them I didn’t want to change rooms, they told me I had to . They offered me a discount. Turned out to be about $20 off! They said we would have to check out in AM , bring things to luggage area for them to hold until our other room was ready. This gave us less time at the parks. Couldn’t use our bag as planned at the park because we had to pack room items in it. After we picked our luggage back up from the luggage area, we discovered our shoulder snap was broken on the one bag. We were told to file a report and manager would contact us. Manager said she would credit me the cost of the bag. I explained all the trouble we had, all the time we lost etc. I brought a male friend with me, and the hotel staff kept calling him my husband and “Mr. Somervill”. He is not my husband , not even a boyfriend. This was Inappropriate and embarrassing. Be upfront about pool hours. We didn’t know the pool with slide was only open on weekends or we could have planned accordingly. We waited until our last full day to visit the other pool and discovered it was closed. The lazy river was closed most of the time we were there, nor was the hot tub. I am an annual pass holder , so I got a discounted rate on the room I thought it was a great value. After what we went through, I realize we would have been better off to stay somewhere else and paid more. We flew down just to attend HHN and Universal Studios. We lost so much time switching rooms, handling damaged luggage, and trying to swim in the pools/lazy river and hot tubs that were closed (that’s all my son wanted) that we lost precious time and a chance to make memories. I asked for a later check out to allow us to do a few things we didn’t get do e due to all the problems, they said the beat they could do was noon. 1 hour extra. Wow. Terrible customer service! I like the location of resort, some of the staff and the shuttle option. That’s about all the good I can say.
We would not recommend a stay at this hotel, but I guess it's based on your priorities. My biggest issue was the pools, the main reason we stayed there. The pool in the Thunderbird/Starlight area is CLOSED Monday through Thursday, which they DON'T tell you when you book or when you check in. We were really looking forward to swimming for an hour before we left today, but there was no time to hike to the other pool. The second pool area is quite a hike through the hotel lobby. If there's another way, we couldn't find it. The lazy river, which is fun and wonderful, doesn't open until noon. With the afternoon thunderstorms that means it's only open a few hours a day! Again, it's a mystery what time it opened, so lifeguards were forced to answer over and over. One lifeguard answered before we even asked the question.. you could tell hecwas tired of hearing it. So we waited 40 minutes for it to open. The pool there was very crowded. So very frustrating. Transportation - the bus is indeed convenient, but they are cramming every single person they can get into the buses, with no announcements or apparent effort to convince people to wear masks. They are literally allowing people to stand in the aisles and breathe down on you. We were shocked. We only rode once. Several people were expressing concern.. Would not advise riding the bus while covid is still around. Even on the boats, they were squeezing people together. At least it's moving fresh air but they were making strangers sit with two people on a bench. An appalling and complete disregard all the way around for COVID protocols. Third - the food from the Pizza place that delivers to the room was entirely disappointing, Delicioso's. We asked for no peppers. It had peppers and the "breadsticks" were inedible. They didn't look like any breadsticks we've ever had and they were overdone. The walk to the parks and city walk is from a basically unmarked entrance, which seemed a bit odd. Great way to get into the park but there aren't many benches along the way so be advised. The staff seemed great. I'm sorry they have to deal with so many things that must be based on poor administrative decisions. I would rate this lower than any Hampton Inn we've ever stayed at. The rooms were clean and the bed was fine. If you're looking for a budget entry to get to parks, this will satisfy that demand, but if you're interested in the water amenities at all, don't stay here. I've never been more disappointed.
Bad location plan
Person who booked room placed us on complete other side of resort w closed pool and it was under construction… asked for pool side how ever was around near the corner of the pool not exactly pool side… j

Great proximity to the parks, plenty to offer all ages, our little ones loved the pools, our teenagers loved the HHN offerings (Jacked up experience), the game room and bowling alleys, and the adults loved the food and drink options at every turn! The retro-themed decor and music took us back to a more carefree and relaxed time and all this was before we even got to the parks!
