Don’t stay here for a relaxing vacay
If you’re looking for a relaxing getaway, this ain’t it! Not great for just adults. It’s an OK place to stay if you have kids, want to be close to Volcano Bay, and get early access to the parks, but the resort itself is not run well. Don’t expect good service, cleanliness, or peacefulness WHATSOEVER. It’s not as classy as the other Universal Orlando resorts. The hotel layout is cool, it has cool amenities (when they’re open) and decent rooms. But it isn’t a relaxing calm place to stay on vacation and decompress. There’s screaming kids everywhere and loud noises early in the morning and at night. The staff is crabby AF and shuts down the amenities early. They go around slamming down the pool chairs and taking towels 40 min before the pools are supposed to close. Staff hovers over the guests around the pools with bad attitudes. The manager Emmanuel something is extremely unaccommodating and rude, and neither him nor anyone else amongst the staff gives AF about the guests. If there’s bad weather and amenities are shut down, or if they shut down the amenities for any other reason, they’re like oh well we can’t do anything. If they schedule maintenance on the amenities they won’t tell you before you pay, they’ll tell you on the day of and say oh well. They never offer compensation if you have any inconveniences. If you pay for a pool view or volcano view you might get a view of the parking lot or the sandy sidewalks, and they won’t do anything about it. The manager Emmanuel acknowledged that there were inconsistencies with what his staff was enforcing. I think they must’ve changed managers since we last stayed here because 3 years ago we had a better experience. The only nice staff are the ladies in the diner. Also, it’s supposed to be a non-smoking facility, but there were many people smoking around the hotel in the outside areas. The pool gates wouldn’t open with our room keys half the time. The parking lot gates are a pain because you have to swipe a room key to get out. The pools are cold and they opened the lazy river when it was dirty, full of leaves and lizards and cold, but closed it down the next day when the weather was nice and it was clean. I wouldn’t recommend paying more than $130/night for this place, if the rate is any more than that just stay somewhere better.
Stay somewhere else!! Dirty, Bugs, Unfriendly Staff, lazy river shut down, screaming kids everywhere, poor management!
The lazy river was filthy and barely worked, we were only able to get in it 1 time during our 4 night stay because they shut it down for 3 days! The slide pool was also closed down while the other pool was open on one of the nights. The pools did not feel like they were heated. The staff outside and at the pool bar was very rude and unfriendly. The pool bartender guy yelled at me for not having a mask on after coming out of the pool and refused to serve me without a mask! (I am 49 yrs old!) I guess it’s ok to not have a mask on as soon as they hand you a drink though- makes no sense!! They yelled at guests and were very militant about getting people out of the pool and slamming the lounge chairs down before the pool was even closed! I paid for a pool view room and we ended up with view of the sand- we could not even see the pool. The room was not stocked well with enough toilet paper, coffee or towels- I had to go find more from someone in the hall. We also had a big BUG in our room which I had to smush with my sandal! The front office manager on duty was not very accommodating and did not offer anything to help our stay be a better one. I have a medical condition that causes me to be short of breath and possibly pass out and I told him I could not wear a mask so I was wearing a face shield that covered my entire face (it says on the universalorlando.com website that it’s acceptable if you have a condition- I screenshot it and can provide if you need it) - he did not believe me and did not care and said I still had to wear a mask but he would put an exception note in our chart for that day. The only friendly staff we encountered were the ladies in the diner. I think the rest of your staff could use a class in hospitality etiquette & friendliness- including management. We usually stay in higher class resorts with exceptional service, but we chose Cabana Bay because of its amenities... unfortunately those amenities were either not available or were poorly functioning & dirty. Very disappointed & did not enjoy our stay.
Stay somewhere else
We just stayed at Cabana Bay. It was over run with teenagers cutting lines for food and keeping us up at night going up and down hallways and near pool area. We ran out of toilet paper and had to ask multiple times to get more. Our door lock battery died and we got locked out and we had to wait (wet and cold from the pool) to be let in and for someone to change the battery. The room was FREEZING. We asked for more blankets. They gave us some thin ones full of holes. So I bought my kids fleece ones at the gift shop. (There was no comforter at all and we did try to a just the temp to 71 - the thermostat didn’t work) We made the best of it. But would definitely never stay here again
Must stay for a Visit to Volcano Bay!
We stayed at Cabana Bay to visit Volcano Bay water park and it did not disappoint! We were literally steps from the park entrance which made getting there super convenient. The hotel itself has really nice pools, restaurants, and even bowling. It’s super cute retro theme takes you back in time. The hotel was very clean and everyone was friendly. I’d definitely recommend a stay here we had a great time!
Good for families with young kids
This resort was recommended to us by a few friends who have stayed there in the past. This was our first time at Universal (we've done the Disney thing several times), and we wanted to stay on property to take advantage of the transportation to the parks, etc. The good: The staff at the desk (and via text) were very friendly and helpful. Our kids enjoyed the lazy river. Transportation to/from the parks was great - we never had to wait more than a couple of minutes. The food at the pool restaurants was great! Shop in the lobby has a lot of stuff you'd find in the parks (same prices too), plus things like swimwear and sandals, sunscreen, etc. The not so good: We waited almost an hour to check in. I'm not sure if that is typical, but there were only a couple of people working the desk and a LONG line. The hallways and elevators leading to our room (we were in the Americana section) were not the cleanest.... the floors of the elevators in particular look terrible. Our room was ok. We found a dirty sock that had been missed by the cleaning staff. Not sure how well it was cleaned if they missed a sock lying out in the open... and re: cleaning... we stayed Monday-Friday and were told that due to Covid they would not be entering our room for housekeeping during that time. We appreciated all the safety measures, but this really fell flat for us. They couldn't come in ONCE during our stay to change out linens and give us clean towels or empty the trash? Their response was to bag up our trash and leave it in the hallway to be picked up (same with dirty towels). While we enjoyed the pools, the slide was not open during our stay which was a disappointment for my kids, and it didn't matter which time of day we went, we could never find a pair of seats with an umbrella for coverage. Also - I believe it is a non-smoking resort, but more than once I walked through someone's cloud of smoke - both while getting on/off the shuttle bus and near the pool area. The diner is fine, not great. Overall it was just fine. Not anything special, and we wouldn't stay again when we could stay somewhere nicer (with maybe an actual real restaurant, not a cafeteria style diner) for just a little more money.
