Top Notch - Worth Every Cent - Bring Your Snorkel!
We went 9 years ago when this resort opened. The foliage has overgrown a lot to the point where we were a little lost at first for orientation. Just know the Lobby is not the center of the resort. The app helps with knowing what's going on - download it. Also download the MPC app for mobile Passport for US - saves you time in customs line. ROOMS - are super clean, they smell good, and the beds are soft, pillows are plentiful and are goose. As many towels as you need, even toothpaste and tooth brush. They think of everything. LADIES - they supply everything, but if you have longer hair, bring your own conditioner (it's just okay). The lotion and shampoo and body gel are great! SEAWEED - they stay on top of it with a truck to haul it away, but the other resorts don't. It's not as bad as other resorts for sure. It's nature. BEACH - is one of the best. White sand, emerald water, different colors of blues. We arrived at beach at 7:30am and there was no one out there saving spots. There are just so many options and loungers and huts, you can sleep in. There will be some after breakfast still. The pool was the same way. Maybe 3 chairs taken after 8am. I haven't seen that before at a resort! There are plenty of towels. NO SEAGULLS - I didn't see one. There are some black birds, but they don't bother you. SNORKEL - bring your own gear is you have it, even generic. Flippers encouraged. You can rent it about 4 min walk down to the left on the public beach. FOOD - is excellent. Our favorite is the Sushi and French. Market Cafe for breakfast is wonderful and they have the best service! It's tucked away so you can't sit outside and see the ocean, but there is an option for Preferred Club to sit by ocean for breakfast. COFFEE - in the rooms, room service coffee is super good, but we always love Coco Cafe. They can make anything expect cold foam. It's also tucked away from the beach and it's a walk, but a pretty one! GYM - they have everything you need. 2 Smith machines with as much weight as you need, free weights, every type of cardio machine and traditional machines. VOLLEYBALL - beach volley is great, depends on who plays, but there have a somewhat shaded spot and it's a perfect location. They also have pool vball and pool basketball. POOL - the underwater bikes and Aqua Strong (paddleboard in pool class) is a must try. Go early for a spot. They have a popular stretching class lead by the entertainment staff too. COURTS - they only have tennis courts. No actual pickleball court with lines. They have mobile nets for it, it's on turf. I told them to actually build Pickleball courts and more people would come! The closest actual courts are 40 min away. SPA - beautiful of course, worth it! Hydrotherapy is great if you don't want the expense of a massage. POOLS - there are 3 huge pools! Quiet pool is closest to the lobby. And they mean quiet. Surrounded by jungle - very pretty and by a lot of things. The 2 main pools ae centrally located with plenty of space for everyone. They come by with ice cream and have great pool side service! Cruze is a great waiter! The pool concierge's are also great and make sure you have anything you need, umbrellas, towels, etc. The pools are very clean and kept up well. The hotel felt full of people, but there was plenty of space. Cement can get hot, but it's white and not as hot as other places. OVERALL - the hour it takes from the airport is worth it. It's beautiful and the beach is worth the trip itself. If you like to see turtles and snorkel, this place i s amazing. We'll be back! We use Amstar always for transfers. It seems like Tulum is closer, but Cancun is cheaper to fly into still. Same distance from each airport, so we use Cancun. The city of Akumal is very close - like 10 min away. I'd go during the later morning hours or before dinner before shops close.

Loved akumal!
Since we got to the airport three hours early, annnnd our flight is delayed, I guess I'll work on a review! For reference, we've been to all inclusives in Cancun a handful of times (grand moon palace with kids, Le Blanc without), Puerto Vallarta Ziva/Riu and Cabo a few times. we love Mexico! Also, snorkeling. TL;DR - loved it!! I personally have no sense of direction, so this resort would've been very difficult without my husband! The property is gorgeous! Clean, love the grounds, all the plants/flowers and occasionally spiny or furry friends. The service was so amazing - especially the entertainment crew, they really seemed to honestly love their jobs - shout out to Maximilian who we ran into over and over - bike tour (fun but a little sketchy!), blackjack, fun activities. He was very happy and passionate! EXELENTE! Room: started with a basic room booked on points, tropical view, didn't love it so we upgraded for the last two nights and had a huge ocean front room that was amazing! conditioner wasn't great for those who care 😜 but the store was just a quick walk and we picked up a few things. Food was great! Standouts for ne were short ribs at hamitsu and teppanyaki, whole fried fish lunch at seaside and escargot and chicken cordon Bleu & steak at French! We didn't love the Italian but lots of people did! All the pop-ups were good and fun! Snorkeling was great when you paid -we had a young lady guide I believe her name was Anna Maria and she was excellent! She could spot everything! We saw turtles, sting ray, lots of fish, squid etc. Unfortunately when we snorkeled in the areas allowed without paying we didn't see much. It was pretty windy most of our stay, it was also difficult to get chairs in the preferred section of the beach and sometimes hard to get chairs at the pool in the afternoon. The concierge(s) were great and helpful. We did feel like we were tipping constantly and it sucks when you forget to take cash! Overall an amazing stay - a churro cart and fresh tortilla station would take it over the top!! Kalido was EXCELENTE for transportation.

Great resort for couples but beware of the timeshare people
This resort was great. The hotel was very nice and clean and they used premium products in the bathroom. The pools and beach were great and there was always towels and chairs available. The customer service was fantastic. They were so friendly and attentive. I never found myself waiting long for anything and they were always so helpful. Our server on the beach was Velvet and she was lovely. Always checking in on us, anticipating our needs and always happy. The food and drinks were great- better than average for an all inclusive- but not better than a fine dining restaurant. If you're a foodie you probably wont like it but that's what you get at an all inclusive. We really enjoyed the French restaurant and the drinks were wonderful. I will say though the pushiness for time shares was insane. We had to decline their offer to meet 4 times! They even called us on our last day trying to convince us to have lunch with them. It was also creepy eating breakfast in the morning and looking around and seeing 4-5 sales people trying to sell to people while they ate. That is the big reason I didn't give it a 5. When you spend this much money on a trip you don't ned that harassment.

Five stars.
Our stay at Secrets Akumal was absolutely unforgettable. From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel like royalty. Everyone was incredibly kind and always went out of their way to help, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere throughout our trip. Special shoutout to the entertainment team—Max, Ara, and Myra—who were amazing! They brought so much energy and fun to every activity. We genuinely looked forward to seeing them each day. Their passion for what they do really made a difference in our experience. The food was exceptional across the board, but the French restaurant stood out the most. The service was impeccable—our waiter there was so attentive and made our dinner truly special. (I wish I had his name to mention here—he deserves the recognition!) Between the beautiful setting, delicious food, and fun entertainment, Secrets Akumal delivered on every level. We can’t wait to come back!

Least favorite Mexico hotel
Skip it! The hotel is pretty but the food, the hard bed and peeling bedding, the higher price for a room with a view (and joke of a view, sans binoculars), and the worst pushy sales presentation make it all worth skipping. Let’s not forget it is now owned by Hyatt, a company that consistently underwhelms. The food is mediocre at best. This might be okay for spring breakers or those lacking taste buds, but if you prefer an actual high value resort, this is not the place in my opinion.
