    Family & Friends

Staff were excellent. Rooms can use some work. Keys never worked and there was a sewage smell in the washroom. The grounds and beach were beautiful! Jerk chicken was great and the drinks were good.

Do not stay here! Worst resort experience!

This is my 4th Riu resorts in the past 5 years. My first 3 visits were in Jamaica. This particular resort in DR was an horrible experience when I compare it to the others. The service was very poor. Staff rarely spoke when walking by. They did not try to accommodate for english speakers. When they found out we didn't speak spanish they lowered their quality of service. I was surprised in rare occasion's when some of the staff said como estas to us. In Jamaicia, we were consistently welcomed by all staff at all times. DR was the opposite. Everyone seemed extremely bothered and unhappy. Our room 2162, was extremely out-dated. Walking in, I noticed the top of the door frame had cracks and chipped paint with ants coming out of it. The restroom mirror was covered in rust spots, the room was missing a desk, the patio furniture had cigarette burns on it, the floor board behind the bed was broken, the shower was dirty (We took bathes with our flip flops on the entire trip), the bed was uncomfortable, I have aches and soreness in my neck and shoulders due to this bed, the TV was old and the quality was poor, the alcohol nobs were dirty and stained, the refrigerator was old and hard to open, and the mirror outside the bathroom also had rust stains. We called 6 times to ask for an extra blanket and they finally answered and brought one. The alcohol was extremely watered down. I took 4 shot of tequila with hopes of getting drunk and was not phased at all and I NEVER drink. All drinks seemed like virgin drinks and they completely lacked alcohol because they were trying to be frugal with it. We enjoyed the entertainment the days they had them. We enjoyed the Jerk Chicken stand. We enjoyed our time at the beach. There were multiple chairs available with shaded areas. The light skinned entertainer with braids was the only person that consistency spoke to us and seemed enthused to be there. He always said " I love my job". He was the only one that tried to connect with the people. We stayed 6 total days and we were trying to leave after day 2 to come home early. We will not be coming back. We will stay at excellence or go back to Jamaica. I will not recommend this resort to anyone.

    Week in Punta Cana

First week of twin-centre break; very large hotel (1,300 rooms) and accepts group booking so given time of year was full of American Spring Break Students; so rather busy and noisy (not helped by restaurants seeming to lack any soft surfaces to absorb noise). Facilities, pool, beach, etc good and so were drinks, but food pretty much all self-service and rather bland. Rooms big and clean but a little tired round the edges. Good if want to party but not if looking to relax. Close to airport but Punta Cana itself more a strip of coast (somewhat like a costa in Spain) rather than a place and not walkable; malls and a line of big hotel complexes mostly.

Worst experience I’ve ever had. Do not let the “5star hotel” fool you. I have stayed at Inns that were cleaner and nicer. Let’s start with the room. Well AC doesn’t work so be prepared to stay in a room that is 80 degrees or hotter night and day. We have found cockroaches all over the room and to top it off you can’t use the tv because it’s broke. The water pressure in the shower is awful. Don’t plan on washing your hair. You know how an old run down home you lose water pressure when someone flushes the toilet or uses the sink? That’s how this place was. The food. The buffets are awful, the food is garbage and always cold. Even when you walk in the restaurant as the first person it’s usually cold. Drinks are watered down so don’t expect to enjoy yourself. Between my wife and I we had easily 15 cocktails and we weren’t even slightly buzzed. The only decent part is the staff are friendly. But not all are a help. When requesting a new room we were told we can’t switch rooms. So after having to live with cockroaches the size of a cell phone and AC that doesn’t work we are supposed to stay in the same room with dead cockroaches? Oh also, be careful with the elevators. The screens are missing, wires hanging out of the walls and mother boards just dangling right in front of your face. The doors don’t always close which is not safe. I have read the reviews on here telling similar horror stories and I have a message for the person who says “sorry we will continue to work towards being better”. Don’t waste your time commenting back and do something to make this place livable. We are here for a week and after two days we are taking the first flight home. Absolutely horrid. This place is a walking health code violation.
