Never Come Back to This Riu Hotel Again!

My family and I stayed at the Riu Republica for 6 nights and I will say it was not the best vacation we experience but tried to make the best of the situation. I'll start off with the bad. The rooms we're definitely out dated. The curtains on the patio door had lots of stain marks. There were few mold spots in the bathroom. The water in the shower smelled awful. I had to go to the front desk 5 separate times due to our key cards did not work on the first night we were there. Each time I would go down there, they would give me another set of key cards and each time they did not work. Come to find out, it was a sensor issue on the door. Then my kids rooms, the air conditioner was not working. My 6th time going down to the front desk on our first day there to complain about my kids rooms not having any air and you know how hot it gets there in Punta Cana and this particular day was extremely hot. I spent most of my evening on our first night just trying to get our room situated which wasn't complete until after 10pm. As I went down to the front desk to let them know about my key cards, it seem everyone was having that same problem. Luckily, there was a nice lady (I wish I would have gotten her name) took the time to allow my kids to switch out their room for that evening and then the next day, she went out of her way to replace their room along with mine & my wife's room to a different floor with a better view. And when we booked the rooms few months back, we booked a King size for my wife and I and they gave my wife and I 2 full separate beds SMH! When my kids received their new room the next day, it was better than their last room because they had air but come to find out, the air wasn't really blowing out cold air like our room was. Tried to adjust the temperature but that didn't work. They still went ahead and stayed in the room. But I do appreciate the last at the front desk accommodating our situation. However there were some staff workers did seem to have little attitudes when trying to ask for assistance. When we stayed at the Riu in Montego Bay, Jamaica, we had a blast, thinking we were going to get the same experience but that was not the case. With this being our first time in the DR we have decided most likely will not come back or at least stay at the Riu Repulbica. Now for the somewhat good. We pretty much ate at the buffet where they had some good tasting food there but then at the same time, some of the food was not that great. we had read lots of the reviews about the food being horrible. some food items, yes I agree but they had some food items there were ok. There were a couple of staff workers that were really nice & we made sure to sit at their working station. They would interact with us and even teach us little Spanish lol. We made sure to give them a nice tip each night. Again do not know their names but one young kid had braces, very very nice. The drinks there were ok, I pretty much order the same 1 or 2 drinks every time but I always made sure to ask them to add a little bit more liquor because the drinks are a little water down. In my opinion, it's definitely a party hotel but this particular one can really use and upgrade, renovate. In Jamaica, the resort would be very clean the next morning, not here. When I go work out in the morning, I still see trash everywhere from the lobby, to the entertainment spots, pool area. Oh yeah, we have witness people throwing up in thee pool was the pool bar was at on 2 separate occasions and did the clean it up right then and there? The answer is NO!!! very discussing. The would just pour more chlorine. We got to experience this hotel and we have decided, never again. I Usually read the reviews before I book a vacation spot and read the reviews all the up until it's almost time to go but I always say you have to see it and experience for yourself. On this hotel, the ones that didn't like it particular like it that much becuase of different reasons, I totally understand where they are coming from.

    Great resort

We enjoyed our stay at Riu Republica. We read a lot of mixed reviews before going, but I am glad we chose this resort. The white party and pink party were great events. 95% of the food I ate was good - they do have restaurants with servers and restaurants that are buffet style. The resort employees were friendly and happy to assist. Games by the pool and on the beach were fun. Plenty of seating by the pools and beach. Some pools are more lively with swim up bars and some are pretty quiet with not many people in them, which was nice when we wanted to relax vs. be in the middle of the party. The couple’s massage in the beach gazebo was a great way to start one of our mornings. Waterslides were a lot of fun too. Our room was well located in the middle of everything, but I could see where some rooms are a bit far from the beach. Our room being in the middle of everything also meant a lot of noise till late in the night, but it didn’t bother me. Beds were comfortable and I slept well.

Nowhere close to a 5 star! 3 star MAX!

Lord! Where do I begin?! Check in - we checked in online and joined the ‘online queue’. Waited 30 mins without moving so went to another desk and were shouted at to ‘get back in line’. Finally checked in, no map given and poor instructions. Weren’t told where the lift was so had to lug our luggage up to the top floor. Room - got to our room and there were 2 out of 4 numbers missing. Nice big room. Drawers were so hard to open. Mini bar hadn’t been stocked up. Only 1 pillow each. When we requested another one, it was ignored 3 times until we went to reception to get this sorted. Room wasn’t always cleaned. Bed wasn’t made. When asked for minibar to be restocked we were shouted at that we had asked too many times - we weren’t given what we asked for which is why we asked again. Food - both buffet restaurants were lovely with plenty of choice. Japanese restaurant was vile. Spanish wasn’t to our taste. Indian was nice but gave us both dodgy tummy’s. Fusion restaurant was amazing! Italian restaurant was very nice. Steak house was mediocre. Jerk chicken stand was nice. Ceiling of Mangu (buffet restaurant) caved in during lunch service and this was played down by staff. Pools - the pools are not skimmed, bugs, plasters and rubbish left floating on the surface. Didn’t contemplate for a second going into the pools with the swim up bars and people were in them all day not getting out for the loo!!!! Beach - is nice but not very clean. Very far from bar so had to take our own drinks. There is literally no where to go for peace and quiet. Around the pools it’s so noisy and at night the entertainment starts at 21:30 so no chance of getting to sleep - and we were at the ‘quiet’ side!!!! I will NEVER come back here, nor will I recommend it to anyone! How the hell they have a 5 start rating is beyond me!

    Gets the job done

At this resort you get what you pay for. The service wasn't as great as other RIUs but the food was just as good or better. Definitely a party resort which is why we picked this place so it was what we were looking for.

Better than most of the reviews

I took this trip with my adult children and their significant others. We had a good, relaxing time. Here is my opinion on a few things: Transportation to the hotel: was a bit confusing due to different instructions. Finally found the driver and it was somewhat a short drive to the resort. Tip: Go outside of the airport to the Riu/Expedia/Dreams Destinations counter to the individual wearing a white shirt trimmed in green. Your name should be on the list. Transportation to the airport: check with the Dreams Destinations guide at the main stage the day before checkout to be notified as to what time you need to be in the lobby. Be prompt for departure. Check-in/Check-out: Both were pretty smooth. Our rooms were ready right after checking in. The front desk gave me the wrong directions to my room, so it was a bit of a walk for me. Some staff were not very helpful when I asked where I could locate my room. It took me about 25 - 30 minutes to find my room. Keys: Make sure to keep the keys very far away from your phones!!! The keys deactivate very easily and often! CLEANLINESS: the resort was pretty clean. Sometimes you would find plates in the hallways or glasses in the elevator from the night before, but the housekeeping starts very early in the morning up into the evening. Make sure to put your DND sign on the door if you do not want service. The beach is not cleared of seaweed, so be cautious of that. ROOMS: My kids stayed on the pool side, and surprisingly, it was pretty quiet at night. I didn't find that the rooms were terribly outdated as some reviews stated. The rooms were clean. I did not choose housekeeping service since it was only me staying in the room. According to my kids, their mini-bar wasn't restocked while we were there but that was not an issue for them. If you prefer to use washcloths to shower, bring your own from home because they only supply hand towels for you to wash your body. The air conditioner worked perfectly, even to the point where I had to turn it off one night. The beds were comfortable. You only have 2 pillows per bed. FOOD: Okay this was the downfall! The best "meal" is the jerk chicken by the beach. Breakfast was ok. Ramon and Miguel in the smaller buffet were awesome!!! The buffet for lunch and dinner needed help! The steakhouse was good, nothing too special. You must be there by 6:00pm to be put on the list. The Italian restaurant and Japanese restaurants were just okay as well. Please tip the staff!!!!
