I thought the hotel was great. I find that in PV and around, it is hard to find a good quality all-inclusive resort. This one raises to challenge. The only downfall though, I found that social distancing and sanitary measures were quite loose. There are arrows on the floor and rules to follow, but no one to enforce them. The pool bar was packed with people, without masks and just rubbing on each other. We made sure to stay away from people to be safe and made sure to have food when it wasn't busy because otherwise, it was quite cramped. Also, the bathrooms are outdated, but I mean, for the price we paid it's decent!
Nice Covid surprise
4 of us went here Sept. 20 thru 26th, 2020. Pool very nice and big, very warm. Weather was great. Sprinkled for one minute during the day the whole time. Rained a couple of times in the night but still warm. No mosquitoes at all. Buffet had so many options that you will find plenty that you will love. Their guacamole was my staple. Birria soup and their pozole were so so good. The service at the a la carte restaurants made you feel like being in a fancy restaurant. They love feeding you wine, liquor and beer if you desire. A few a la carte restaurants offered filet mignon. It's tender and worth it. Lobster was mediocre but still worth it. The butter tastes more like margarine. Lots of yummy looking fruit (not my thing) but looked good. Overall food quality was pretty great. New york steak was pretty good. I love rib eye and it was great one night and pretty good another. Men had to wear pants in a couple of the a la cartes. There are so many staff, you get service faster than you need. If you tip, they really give you the service like royalty. The lobby is beautiful. The rooms are really good. Not stinky. Bathrooms aren't stinky. So you know, the female staff go in the bathroom to clean it even if you're in there, fyi. Our rooms were cleaned, sometimes twice a day. That may be because leaving a tip on the bed helps. They make your bed even if you have things on the bed, so you know. Not used to that but nothing came up missing. I needed a lighter and one of the male staff gave me his lighter and said he'd just get it back from me some time later. The service and hospitality from staff was superb. The only place that seemed to slack a bit was the sports bar. It wasn't ever busy but sometimes we would be waiting and the bartender would serve their buddies (it seemed) first even though we were there first. Also there were several times when the bartender was talking to (a buddy?) at the bar and we'd get ignored for a little longer than seemed normal. Overall, not really worthy of complaining about. Snack foods like hot dogs in the sports bar that you can just grab out of the refrigerator and microwave up. Not too shabby actually. Played lots of sand volleyball and water volleyball. That was super fun. Oh and ping pong. I was the champ by the way. There was some form of entertainment each night. It was the time of year that a lot of the guests were mostly Mexican. It was rare to find people who spoke English. I personally didn't care. I speak enough spanish to get by and the Mexican guests were great. Very friendly. The service in the entertainment section was ridiculously good. They checked on us very often. (probably didn't hurt that we tipped every time). I think the one that stood out the most was Adriana? She took good care of us. Use Uber, not taxi. Uber is way cheaper. We went to Bucerias nearby and it cost 2 to 3 bucks. Taxi was 6 or 7. Try all the a la carte restaurants. There's something good at each one. If you go to Bucerias visit The Snack Shack. We went there twice. The owner was awesome. He sat down with us and kicked it with a beer or two. His name is Alex. He even went and got us a cigar when we expressed interest. Who does that? Most beers in Bucerias are 1.50. Exiting the airport beware of the "shark tank". Oh man, it's a real thing. People trying to hit you up and get your business, get you to use their services. Just keep your head down and keep on walking toward the exit. The resort takes visa and US dollars. You can tip in US dollars. I hear people prefer pesos and we got some while in Mexico at an ATM but not entirely necessary. If you need change for your large pesos from the ATM just get it from the front desk. Overall, food was great, very clean, amazing customer service, due to covid the sports bar didn't have pool or foosball but sports were on the tv's. Alcohol is watered down but thank god. When you drink all day it's a blessing. Gotta wear your mask til you are drinking, eating,or sitting down at a buffet or restaurant table or outside pretty much. Enjoy feeling like Royalty.
Came for a week with a young family. Room was dated but very clean and well maintained. The only complaint was that we were promised a child’s minibar in the advertisement but the family rooms only have a single minibar. Cleanliness everywhere was outstanding, we alway saw someone cleaning or repairing and every time we ate temperature and hand sanitising had to be done before entry. Some restaurants were closed on a rotating basis but not an issue, easily accessed and no queuing. The buffet was slightly repetitive but always well presented and good food. I noticed some people complained about service but all of the service we had was excellent. The front desk was good and we used taxis to travel to various activities. The children’s club was very quiet (expected) but little in the way of physical activities being mainly arts and crafts, something for the hotel to consider. The only bar issue was the diet soda was very watered down making drinks taste poor. Should use standard ratios to improve the taste. Although alcoholic measures were good and waiters continually walked the pool asking if we were all ok. Overall a great stay with a couple of things that could be improved. We would come back for sure.
We stayed here with two other couples celebrating special birthdays. We are Riu Club Gold, and hoped for something special to commemorate the birthday... room upgrade, special room decor, some sort of recognition. NADA. Not a single thing... period. Our room was not even cleaned the day of my birthday. So disappointing, considering our previous stays at other Riu resorts that truly went out of their way to recognize special events. We got exactly the rooms we booked, decent view but not the special service we have experienced at other Riu Palaces... notably Riu Palace Las Americas in Cancun and Riu Palace Macao in Punta Cana. Little touches that were missing - robes in the room, towel animals, nightly turndown service, entertainment in the lobby. Minor things really, but factors you consider when choosing to upgrade to the Palace. It was cool during our stay and we appreciated the coffee cart in the lobby... excellent. We enjoyed the Italian and Mexican restaurants, was not able to get into the Steak restaurant. The Buffett was good, but not memorable and service was iffy. Our normal favorite dining experience at Riu Palace resorts is Krystal, it was not good at this resort. The food was served lukewarm and not as flavorful as other locations we have been to. We love coming to this area for the gorgeous beach and beautiful sunsets. We spend part of our day on the beach and part at the pool. Activities scheduled for the day at the pool were haphazard, we arranged our excursions to be there for the foam party, it never happened. Sadly, This was a recurring theme. We did like the printed activity schedule available at the front desk. So...good points.... expansive beach, beach drink service, $20 massages at the tents, close walk to Bucerias or other Rius. We did not stop at the Jalisco this time but did check out the renovations at Riu Vallarta. The day we were there was very busy, crowded and loud. The old Vallarta was one of our all time favorite places, but we found it to be very crowded now. We did go into Bucerias one day and the Las Caletas excursion another day.... highly recommend both. We saw lots of whales!! We may come back some day after the renovations happen but for now, we will go back to our favorites.
Riu Palace during Covid
We live in Mexico, just North of Puerto Vallarta but wanted to get away for a few nights for my birhtday. Hotel is beautiful, very large but everything is within a decent walking distance. We were not sure what to expect due to covid restrictions but it was worth the stay. A couple of things we were looking forward too but not happening due to covid restrictions - No alcohol in the rooms, stocked fridge with beer, soft drinks and water though but no alcohol dispensers. No room service at all. No coffee makers in the rooms. I get the covid restrictions but a couple of those don't really make sense to me. Food at the restaurants were amazing, service was always top notch. My wife arranged a private dinner on the beach and it was awesome. Thank you Jackie and Louis! Outstanding service in the dining rooms by Lalo and Julienne. Took the time to find out our names and always said hi when they say us. Same with Jackie and Luis. Pool bar is open but they make the drinks at the upper bar and bring them down so you can still get service at the pool bar. Service around the pool was fast and friendly. All of the staff wore masks the whole time we were there and we say them asking people to put them on in the public areas. You have to wear masks too and from bars, dining and pool but once seated you can remove them. All in all a great trip but missed room service the most.
