    Honeymoon: Dirty, Moldy, and Downgraded

    My wife and I stayed at this property for a portion of our honeymoon in May 2024. Upon check-in, we were given a complementary “upgrade” to a villa suite. The front desk agent said it would be better than the partial ocean view junior suite we booked, due to the building under construction next door. Once we opened the door to the villa, we immediately noticed a strong smell of mold and mildew. After traveling all day, we dropped our bags off and went out to get dinner. When we returned to the room from dinner, I turned the ceiling fan on, hoping to circulate some air. Chunks of dust flew off the fan and landed on the floor and bed. I began to question how clean the rest of the room was. After a closer look, we noticed all the light fixtures were not only rusted, but also coated with dust. Additionally, there were stains on the bed sheets. The duvet cover and decorative pillows also were dirty. And their was black mold spots on the walls… At this point, my wife and I go back to the front desk and ask if we can have the room we booked initially, instead because the villa was so dirty and smelled of mold. We were told that they were full for the night and to come back in the morning and ask again. We didn't get much sleep that first night and by midnight I was having trouble breathing because of the mold. It was unfortunately one of those rooms you just don’t feel clean in… The next morning, at 7 AM, I went back to the front desk and complained because of how bad our experience had been and asked to be moved rooms and that if nothing was available, we would be checking out and going to staying somewhere else. At 2 PM we were finally moved to a junior suite (same room type we booked initially). It was clean and satisfactory to stay in. I asked the front desk agent if anything could be done to comp a portion of the room rate for the first night, since the villa was so disgusting and we were unable to sleep much. I was told that since the junior suite we were just moved to had a “full ocean view” that the new room was enough to make up for our poor experience. We didn’t even ask for an upgrade to begin with. Just a clean and mold-free room to sleep in… The staff were all friendly, for the most part, but we are still very disappointed that almost 2 days of our honeymoon was spent dealing with the dirty moldy room. The condition of the villa should have been unacceptable for RIU to even rent out. We spent over $3K to stay there for 4 nights… We were so excited to visit Aruba and stay at the RIU. If you ever choose to stay at this resort, I would recommend avoiding the villas. They are not well maintained or clean. I thought I would get a survey email from RIU to leave a review after the stay. However, it never came, so I decided to share our experience on trip advisor. I understand that things do happen. However, I feel it’s the responsibility of RIU to prevent this sort of thing and also rectify the situations they happen. We’re not sure if we will stay at a RIU again, after this experience. We don’t have much confidence anymore and expected more from a RIU property. Hopefully this review will save others from dealing with the same issues my wife and I experienced on our HONEYMOON! :(

    Lots of Rules....but nice

    I would like to start my review by giving special thanks to the following employees for their participation in making my birthday/anniversary stay special: Albi at the front desk was so accommodating and kind, Chef Victoria personally handled my dietary needs with professionalism and a smile, Manager of housekeeping Jacqueline and Daisy decorated my room so beautifully, and last but certainly not least Andres made sure my favorite drinks were well stocked in my room! Now the rest of the review are things you should note when choosing to stay at most RIU properties: No food is allowed to be taken out of the buffet restaurant (is understandable) but I know some people will wonder why, if you choose a villa room, request to stay on the first floor if you can't walk up 2 or 3 flights of stairs, be prepared to enjoy the nightly entertainment outside (although covered, it can get pretty steamy in their theatre), if you want a lounge chair under an umbrella on the beach - you have to go and put a towel down at 5AM ( I hope they come up with a better system that is fair), when eating breakfast and dinner in the buffet they should let guests pick their own seat. Like I said .. lots of rules, there are more but you can probably read more reviews to get some I may have left out.

    Amazing stay!!

    Traveled to Aruba with friends. It was our first time there. We all enjoyed RIU and are already planning on coming back. Food was wonderful, beds were very comfortable (even the sleeper sofa), service was amazing. Everyone was so friendly and helpful!!!
