Nice Resort with Poor Customer Service & Communication

My dad and I love Florida and typically go a few times a year. We decided to go in December, and I wanted to try a place we had not been before. The Diplomat looked really nice online - great pictures and what looked like a good steakhouse. The experience started with my reservation to the steakhouse being cancelled twice with no explanation- just an e-mail from Open Table saying it was cancelled. I was able to rebook a third time. Fast forward to the day of arrival. We pulled up and saw a ton of construction at the front of the building. There was no notification on the website that the hotel was under construction. We were early to check in, but I went to the desk to let them know we had arrived. The woman at the desk was INCREDIBLY rude and not welcoming at all. Additionally, I was told that our room was actually ready, but if we wanted to go in, I would be charged a fee for early check-in. I was taken aback, as I have NEVER been to a hotel that would not just pass the key over if I checked in early and the room was ready. I never requested early check-in, I was actually going to see if they could store our bags and inquire about parking. Any other hotel has said “great news! Your room is ready now!” and given the key if I happened to have that luck. Of note, I wasn’t a tremendous number of hours away from check-in. So the room sat empty until 4 pm, as I refused to pay an additional fee for an already expensive room. I am careful not to book cheap hotels to avoid service and attitudes like this, but I guess that didn’t work in my favor this time. We ended up getting back in the car, going to eat, and coming back later. When we checked in later in the day, we saw that even more of the resort was under construction- I’m assuming the lobby and the pool that is on the upper level. Everything was draped and noisy. Again, not the biggest deal in the world, but there should be a notification about construction on the website upon booking- and I booked direct. The shops were ridiculously overpriced. The room’s balcony was very nice and had a nice view, especially at night. Parking was across the street and pretty easily accessible. As it was the Christmas season, there were nice decorations throughout. The pools were nice although one was closed due to the construction. Beach service was non-existent and no one that worked here went out of their way to be accommodating. Another issue was that our room keys would randomly stop working. I had to switch out 2 different keys. Lastly, on my last day at the resort, a woman complimented me on my shoes. I quickly realized that it was just a way to approach me about booking a future stay at a Hilton hotel. I can’t stand this pushy type of behavior, especially while I’m on vacation. All in all, the resort itself is nice (I assume nicer when the construction is finished) but the poor customer service, lack of attentiveness, poor communication on the website, and horrible attitudes from the majority of staff, especially at check-in, make it a “one and done” deal.

    Bad visit

Where do i start. Called three times to get the room serviced. (never came). Went to the pool but since they are remolding, very limited place to sit. Ended sitting on the pool edge. Ordered two beers and a margarita ended costing just under $50.00 with a 20% tip automatically included. My advice, stay clear.

    My worst experience

1 Star I expected a lot more from a resort like The Diplomat, but unfortunately, the service was a huge disappointment—especially at the breakfast restaurant. The host was incredibly rude and dismissive, as if doing their job was a burden. We weren’t greeted with a smile or even basic courtesy. When we asked a simple question about the wait time, we got attitude instead of answers. The rest of the staff seemed unmotivated and disorganized, and we constantly felt like we were inconveniencing them just by being there. For the amount of money this place charges, you’d expect at least decent hospitality. Sadly, that was not the case. Definitely not coming back.

    Construction impacts pool

Change your reservation if you want a nice quiet vacation by the pool. My kids spend most of vacation time at the pool so I called on purpose prior to arriving to ask about the construction and specifically the impact on the pool. I was told the pools weren’t impacted and it was only the north cabanas. Anyways, the pools themselves are open but the space outside the pool for chairs is cut in half. The construction blocks off all the seating area for about 60% of the pool. The hotel is sold out and everyone has to use a very limited amount of chairs. It’s incredibly crowded and in no way relaxing.
