    Too Expensive and Dirty Room

Recently for spring break my family and I stayed at this resort for 2 nights. I will say location was great on the beach. I booked with Expedia based on the description that was provided. This was not a cheap resort to stay at for those tonights, but yet we chose to stay there based on what we read online. After entering the room, we learned that the floor was dirty full of sand and dirt. We could not take our shoes or socks off without getting our feet dirty. That’s when we started to learn that they don’t provide room service or cleaning unless you stay there for five nights. For our whole trip we had no room service. No one cleaned the floor or anything not only that but for such an expensive resort, they do not provide you with beach umbrellas or chairs. You have to pay a third-party $50 per day for those items. I do not recommend this place due to those reasons I could’ve paid less money to stay on a different resort and gotten all of those items included in my stay for less. Based on what what disclosed online I was lied to and I had a horrible experience.

    Pros and Cons

DiamondHead is definitely a mixed bag. First the positives.. the staff at Cabanas are fantastic.. attentive and always with a smile. The bellhop John.. just as great as the staff at Cabanas. Our beachfront room view did not disappoint and the beach was certainly less crowded than Lani Kai and Margaritaville .. which was a huge plus for us. Now the negatives.. front desk staff were constantly meh.. seemed like you were bothering them if you had a question and one refused to go through our final bill with us. We also requested a late checkout when we made the reservation, when we checked in, and the day before check out. They made us call at 7am the day of check out to see if it was available. Unfortunately it was not.. but really poor customer service not telling us before then.. having to wake out early on our last morning.. they obviously knew the room was already booked. The other issue was the cleanliness of the room.. or lack there of.. sand was everywhere on the floor as soon as we walked in.. tables/bathroom vanity/kitchen cabinets had stains/marks on them, and really needed a good cleaning. Not sure if we would stay here again.. as our favorite part was Cabanas and you don’t have to stay on property to eat there.

    Worst service ever

The resort was great but I had the worst service EVER at the restaurant. The waitress asked us to close out because she was cut but we hadn't received our food yet so we asked if it was coming. She said no and that the kitchen was closed now. She forgot to ring it in - I totally understand that it happens, but she offered no apologizes, didn't offer to make it right, simply kept circling back to see if we'd put our card down yet. When we spoke to the manager, he basically said she wasn't good at her job and offered to comp three of our six suncruiser drinks. Totally understand that mistakes happen, but I just don't feel that this was handled appropriately at all by the waitress or the manager.

    Proceed with Caution

Oh man - I do not even know where to start. This was BAD. I should preface we were only there 2 nights (which I think is a large part of how we were treated). This was the final stop on a long trip throughout the state. This ‘resort’ was highly recommended by family members and we were so excited to go! We knew they might be working out some things post Ian, but not at all to this degree. This experience was so beyond bizarre, this review doesn’t even seem real for well over $400/night. After finally getting into our room that we were ‘upgraded to’ since it was not ready on time, we noticed the room itself was not clean at all. I pulled down the sheets as part of a habit, and there were MULTIPLE body hairs on the fitted sheet. The bed was made, but it looked pretty obvious that the sheets had not been changed or were dirty upon changing? We call the front desk, and they bring up new sheets. They SIMPLY DROP THEM OFF. I call back and they said they have no one to service the room, so we have to make our own bed. We had to PULL OFF THE DIRTY SHEETS WITH BODY HAIR ON THEM THAT WAS NOT OURS and REMAKE OUR BED. I mentioned the room itself was also very dirty and they offered us a ‘sleeper room’ to stay but we could not change rooms. We only could ‘sleep in it’. They said they were sold out but the sign outside said ‘vacancy’. Other room issues: -The floors were covered in sand or dirt. You might say, “well you are on the beach.” Sure! But we had not been to the beach yet. -End tables are glass and had literal crumbs, dirt all crammed underneath the glass. -(Minor) but charging ports on the table on one side of the bed did not work. The next morning, we peace out of the room as soon as we humanly can and go to a baseball game. After the game, I noticed a missed call from the resort. After the above complaints when I called the front desk the prior day, SURELY someone would have serviced the room or at least mopped/left us new towels? NOPE! Because I did not pick up my cell phone, which I did not even hear ring - they will not enter the room. They only do housekeeping service for stays 5 nights or longer, even if you complain and have to make your own bed the night before. Resort Issues: -Restaurant is not open until Wednesdays (Closed early in the week), beach bar only open until 8. How can you call yourself a ‘resort’ without a simple amenity like dining? -Construction - any room facing the pool or gulf will hear it (they are literally building a terrace right outside the pool). If you are sitting at the pool it will be going the entire day and it is loud. -Elevators: Only one bank is working and they are SLOW. Literally every person we ran into in the elevator was complaining about how slow they are. When we left (we had no room charges so we didn’t swing by the desk), I got a call at 11am saying we needed to checkout to return our bracelets (which are the room keys). I told the woman we left them in the room but apparently we needed to drop them at the desk per the rules, or we would be charged. No one told us this at check-in. I spoke to the manager and she said she would make sure we weren’t charged for the bracelets. How noble. FYI re: Pool towels - there is a sneaky sign under the sink. Make sure you have all 6 under the sink or you will be charged for them. After all of this, we were not offered compensation on the current stay since it was paid for already in full prior to check in. I was offered a free night in the future which I laughed at the thought of ever returning here. I will not get into my thoughts on how I thought my discussion went with the manager, it isn’t even worth my energy at this point. I am rooting for you to get it together, Diamondhead. We all work hard for our money (despite if we are there 2 nights or the entire winter), and your hotel is not cheap. Show some respect for the people who are paying to stay there and treat us like human beings.

    Long Weekend

Room: Went back and forth between this resort and Margaritaville down the road. Chose this resort because it offered a gulf view room for the same price as an interior room at the other place. The joke was on me. Pictures depict our "Gulf View" room. This was the same price as other gulf view rooms. Terrible and misleading. This room should be advertised and priced as an "obstructed view" like they do on cruise ships. Pictures are sitting at the table and loungers on the patio. The view where you can see the rooftop and construction scaffolding is standing up on the patio. Not only did we have a half wall blocking the view but 1/3 of the screen was missing and one screen was ripped. We were unable to open the sliders to hear the gulf because of the air conditioners on the rooftop adjacent to the room. Toilet ran continuously every time we flushed it. We just fixed it ourselves each time and reported it when we left. Elevators: The elevators closest to the room are still not working but another set in the front of the building does. We were on the 2nd floor so it was much faster to just walk up the stairs. Beach: As said by other reviewers, the beach reconstruction has moved down the beach a couple hundred yards so no heavy equipment in front of the resort. You can still hear the generators running nonstop. Chairs and umbrellas available for rent ($45/day). The gentleman working wa kind and accommodating. There are also a couple dozen loungers up by the resort away from the water that are first come/first serve. Beach is expansive and has very soft sand. Location: Times Square and other beach bars with live music are all within walking distance. This resort is towards the end of the activity on the island so it is WAY less crowded. Restaurant: Ate at Cabanas (the beach bar) for dinner one night. Drinks were good, staff were attentive. Food was mediocre. Both my husband and I ordered the Cuban Sandwich. I described it as a sandwich someone made earlier in the day, wrapped it in wax paper and threw it in the fridge until ordered. The sandwich was served in the wax paper with grill marks on the paper (not the sandwich). It was steaming hot and soggy, the bread had no crisp to it, and was bland. My husband described it as something that reminded him of a gas station sandwich. Misc: Plenty of parking, coffee/breakfast truck in the parking lot each day had good coffee and smoothies, resort was clean, beach towels were provided, wristbands are used for room access instead of traditional key cards which proved to be very convenient, closest vending machine was 2 floors up and outside in the dark
