Great ocean, delicious food, few people
Visited in early September 2020 for 1 week. The new "normality" looks like this. Masks are a must in restaurants and lobby. Every time you enter the buffet/restaurant, your temperature is measured. The food in the buffet is behind glass about a meter away from the visitors. The names of the dishes are written in Spanish (large print) and English (small print). If your vision is not 100%, it is not always possible to see which is which. You need to point your finger or tell the waiters every time what you want them to put to your plate. You are expected to reserve breakfast, lunch and dinner at the buffet every day using their website. In practice, we constantly forgot to do this, but we were allowed into the buffet without a reservation. On the day of arrival we tried to book an Italian restaurant and a Steakhouse, but the only available date was on the last day before our departure. The room door is opened using a chip embedded in the bracelet. All staff are wearing masks, even the workers cleaning the seaweed on the beach. The sunbeds on the beach are washed with some kind of liquid. In fact, anythign that gets cleaned gets marked with a small blue sign saying it was disinfected. The hotel is about 20% full on weekdays, and closer to 30% on weekends. On weekends, locals come to the beach and love to blast music from speakers. Despite the fact that in the adult part of the beach there are close to 30 people, it was difficult to find a quiet place on weekends (visitors with their own music plus music coming from the bars). We got sunbeds on the first line without any problems at about 9.30 am. There were always seats on the second line. The ocean is clean with practically no seaweeds. Waves are pretty constant, 2 days out of 7 waves were quite strong, but we swam every day. Buoys are relatively far, so there is enough space for swimming. The wind is also strong, therefore after 5 pm it becomes cool on the shore, and you don't really want to get into the water anymore. Food can be ordered to the room with a delicious but limited menu (nachos as starters, then pasta, burgers, fries, pita) There is a souvenir shop in the lobby, the prices are 20% lower than at the Punta Cana airport. I am grateful to the staff for their hospitality and high level of service, and to the hotel management that they continue to receive guests despite this covid situation. I believe that the probability of getting sick with coronavirus (flu, tuberculosis, mumps, insert the right one) in all-inclusive is basically zero. I do not regret for a second that I went on vacation, despite the constant intimidation and recommendations to stay at home.
Many changes with Covid
We have been to this resort 3 times. Our first trip was 10 years ago and then last year over Labor Day week. Currently, we are still here. We love the resort and will come back. However, this experience is significantly different than our first two stays. Typically, this is a very low key place. If you wanted to party or be entertained, you could take the golf cart to “The Village”. We have done this and a good time was had. Due to Covid only Ambar and Esmeralda are only open. The entertainment takes place in the Lobby. This is fine but if you are expecting the low key after dinner drink, the lobby isn’t where you will find it. The closure of other sections of the resort filters those all guests into the “Luxory” sections. The clientele is a little different than in the past. The dress code appears to have lightened up. The food at the buffet honestly is awful. Dried out. I do believe this is because the guests are able to get reservations at the sit down restaurants and no one needs to eat there. It is limited and like I said, sits out too long. Beach restaurant is still very good. Not a Buffett like the past. They still have the best burgers. My husband was so excited to get his tuna steaks but they are not serving them. I was excited for burgers. I wasn’t disappointed. Room service is great! Burgers again are fantastic. Sports bar food is similar to room service. Swim up bar not open. Same Staff as last year. Pool needs cleaned. Green and oil floating on top of the water. The twerking at the pool was certainly new this year. One gentleman who is a server at the various restaurants is not friendly. I remember him from last year. We booked on Bahia Principe’s website and booked the air fair. What they don’t tell you is it took us to Expedia when we selected the airfare. We do not get credit for our stay even though we booked from their website and added airfare. Makes nonsense. We also had to pay for transfers. Will come again in hopes it goes back to the way it was with a more selective clientele and low key resort.

Thank you for making us stayed memorable Ones attitude will make or destroy the way you vacation no matter the destination. To it, add a great customer service and you most definitely will have the complete experience. The checking process was fast and efficient. And so was the check out. The rooms were clean and the private pool was very well maintained. The buffet during breakfast and lunch; Brisas during lunch afternoon snacks were super clean and immaculately kept. For dinner we visited M.E.A.T, Portofino, The Greek and the Fish Market during our stayed. Every one of these restaurant’s menus were simply delicious and above satisfying. Now to what we felt was the best part of our experience, customer service. Everyone we came in contact with during our stayed, from the cleaning crew to the management personnel, was friendly, helpful, and most importantly consistent with their joyful attitude. However, there were some interactions that put the cherry on top in our experience: Albania Mendez from management, it was a pleasure to interact with someone from management and not feel like they are doing it by obligation. She was genuinely friendly and when she smiled it never felt forced. During lunch and dinner, Manuel, Julissa, Paula, Pablo Santana and Enrique were incredibly profound and professional with their service. From making a joke to make us laugh, to making sure we felt welcome every time. Their attitude were always friendly. They definitely know what customer service is and how deliver it. We most definitely hope to see them again next time we visit. Carmen and the other Pablo at the Sports bar and Jensy at the pool bar were also a great asset to our experience being wonderful. Overall, we would definitely recommend anyone to go and visit. Just make sure you go ready to have fun and with a great attitude. Remember what I said at the beginning, your attitude is 75% of the experience the other 25% will definitely be provided by the staff. Excellent food and one of the nicest (corner swim-up) accomodations I've had anywhere in the Carribean. The only negative for me was the lack of decent smoking areas. Whenever I was lucky enough to find an ashtray and spark up a gasper, I was forced to tolerate the stink-eye and rude comments from those non-smokers who were, no doubt, reformed smokers or retired teachers with Tilley hats and Subarus.
To start off with the good- rooms, beach and the pool are top notch. Came here with boyfriend and two of our friends to have a nice vacation during the Covid situation. Everyone is cautious about that. Everything else - not so much. Service here is very poor- most waiters and waitresses don’t speak English and don’t try to understand you. If you don’t tip after every small thing they do, they won’t service you the next time you come. Very little explanation for anything in this hotel. You’re on your own trying to figure how everything works. Went on a snorkeling trip and they didn’t explain a single thing and demanded a tip for taking pictures on their own phone and when looked at, there were no photos of us just the water. Alcohol is very bad. Everything is watered down extremely and just tastes so bad. Food has absolutely no taste when it comes down to something as simple as pizza or pasta it’s still barely bearable. As for advertisement from the company we bought this hotel from, it said all restaurant a la carte are available unlimited and open and that the buffet is always open. When we came here we found out you have to make a reservation for every single place and without it you cannot eat. That is understandable but when we came and tried to make a reservation every place was booked out a few days in advance which left us going to the buffet which is not good. Coming to the Italian restaurants that they offer- also not so good. Everything is either not salty at all or not sweet at all and has zero taste. Overall, really bad trip besides the room comfort, beach and pool. Will not be coming back to Dominican Republic in general as it has much worse service than other Carribean countries. Fully understand the COVID situation but service and food should not be affected by it this extensively.
