    Average Experience

    First off…. The staff was super friendly and we never wanted for anything around the resort. The pool area seemed nice to us and there was always a cold beverage. The rooms are very dated…. Like very… But they do have a cool wristband door key, so you never have to worry about forgetting your room key. We had a premium seaside view and it was fine. The balcony was very small, but worked. The restaurant staffs were great and always had a smile. The food was so so and there were not many options…but it was good enough. Overall I give them an average score because we have stayed at other Barcelo properties and they were much nicer. This was not expensive…. So all in all it makes sense.

    We are extremely well traveled and Barcelo Gran Faro Did Not Let Us Down

    We are quite well satisfied with our time spent at Barcelo Gran Faro. Price for all inclusive was fair and amenities were many. As with anywhere in Cabo, take your phone translator with you and you will have no issues. The wiFi is weak to non existent but we didn't go there to work, so our cell service worked just fine. The staff was wonderful, always helpful and attentive to our needs. The only issue had nothing to do with the staff but with the guests...you will encounter a few borrachos trying to get their "monies worth" in alcohol. We saw more than one extremely intoxicated people. Food was above average, the sushi and peppered seared tuna, while it looked fine, I declined to partake (for obvious reasons) but that was all that concerned me with the food. The pools and surrounding areas were clean and very well maintained. I'm some folks could go there and not have a good visit for a multitude of reasons but our experienced traveling souls had a great time! Highly recommend.

    Great Mid-Level Resort

    Good: - Staff are wonderful. Very welcoming and professional. This goes for all staff - bellboy, reception, pool guys, servers, etc. Please tip they work hard for you. - Covid testing on-site. Best prices in San Jose. $150 Canadian for PCR test (too bad our government requires it of vaccinated citizens to enter their own country). $25US antigen test if you are American. - Food is very good & varied, best we have had in an all-inclusive. Too bad we missed the seafood restaurant that is offered only once a week. Lots of seafood at other restaurants tho. Best ceviche at lunch. Shrimp Taco (order 2) at Mexican and Rib eye at Italian (not on menu but ask). - Reception willing to exchange bills. We only use pesos and need lots of $20 pesos for tips ($1.20 cdn). Better deal than All those using US to purchase items here - pay more. - Music at pool is a nice addition and not always excessively loud and rarely anyone on a PA or Mic System (thank you for that) - Rooms are basic but large and come with a well stocked fridge including bottled water. - Premium package is very nice. Ocean front, premium alcohol and a few other perks like being able to reserve restaurants for your whole stay. Plus a sun area with chairs and umbrellas which they enforce for premium only guests. - Beach Vendors can’t come on Barcelo property. If you want you can go to them or avoid them if you walk the beach. They really are not a problem tho and who doesn’t like a trinket or two. - Adult pool & Adult hot tub. Always appreciated - Towels - no requirement to exchange or lose $50 - Games & Sports - lots of them. Pool, volleyball, mini basketball, ping pong, corn hole toss, etc. Bad (irritating really) - Discrimination alive and well. Men ‘must’ wear closed toe shoes (even hiking boots) to premium restaurants while women can wear crap flip flops or crocks or anything really. Not sure how many men have closed shoes for a trip to the tropics. I get the long pants (well sort of but not really) but shoes? Plus women and men wearing short jean shorts and nothing said. Come on!!! Treat all guests the same. - Notice given to not save chairs or your towels will be removed. Well you know how that goes? It’s BS as you go to breakfast and see 10 lines up with a single towel on it and hours later the yahoos show up as they have been sitting on other chairs. Staff need to deal with this as I’m tired of throwing peoples crap off the chair so I can enjoy the pool for an hour. - Covid mask wearing requirements. Staff are all very compliant with wearing masks all day long in the heat. It’s the idiot tourists that are disrespectful to other tourists and staff by either not wearing masks when inside and/or wearing them under their noses. At least 50% don’t follow the regulations. Arrogance and staff reluctant to enforce. Staff eager to enforce no open shoes for men but enforce masks. Problem is, many Americans can travel when not vaccinated. - Vegan Food - lack of. Limited variety- Bread/Toast (no peanut butter), Oat Milks, seeds, fruits and salads, tomato pasta. They do have cereal but we brought our own. - Umbrellas - most are broken or have to be jimmied to work. At least restring them. - Starbucks on-site. What a joke, bought 2 small black coffee $150 pesos ($9). - Wifi spotty - The Premium lounge has great selection of top shelf alcohol but it’s a weird little business centre and strange bar on top of a cabinet. Nothing special here. Ugly - Habanero Peppers are placed near the egg and/or soup counters. They are mixed with non-evasive peppers in a bowl and are roasted and look yummy. I ate one and immediately was sick. It felt like I had burnt a hole in my stomach and had to lie down and drink lots of milk. 6 hours later I started to feel better. Those things are 100,000 on the hotter scale than any other pepper. They should not be available to unsuspecting customers. Very dangerous if a child ate one. Ditch the habanero! Hints - Uber is cheaper than taxis (airport $12 vs $40 shuttle/taxi) - Use Pesos - Swimming in the ocean is not advisable in San Jose. Take a collectivo (local bus) to Santa Maria beach - Horses (not skinny like old days) available on beach in front of resort - Premium Rooms try to get in Building 2 and ask for highest Floor. - Try to get rooms that don’t face outward (face the courtyard of the ocean). Building 2 faces kids park and Building 3 faces building that will be demolished. - Mojitos are great. Ask for skinny if no sugar wanted. - If peanut butter is a must - bring your own. I would have given 5* except for the closed-toe shoes for men.

    it's fine for R&R

    Definitely not the best all inclusive stay that I've ever had. Definitely don't go into this expecting a 5-star vacation. For the price and experience it was ok. Upon checking in, it took three tries to get the correct room. What they kept offering us was not what was represented on the website. If you're selling it as ocean view, then you need to provide ocean view. Not pool view with a partial view of the ocean. After getting that resolved the room was ok. Not fancy at all, but not terrible. It would've been nice to have an actual bedspread/comforter on the bed. They were made with just 2 flat sheets. On the first day we received bath towels, hand towels and washcloths. After that we were only supplied with bath towels. We always had to ask for washcloths. The minibar again was just ok. It was stocked with water, beer, pepsi products and juice. It was not restocked everyday which was disappointing because we only drank the water and it was only replenished twice over a 5-day stay. The pool was nice and the pool bar was awesome. The wait staff were 5-star all the way. They kept the drinks coming and were always friendly. (they rim alot of the drinks with Tajin, so if you're not a fan, let them know before they make your drink). The buffet was good especially for dinner. I enjoyed the Italian restaurant that you make reservations for, but the Mexican restaurant was a flop for me. The ladies in the spa are excellent if you want to treat yourself to a self-care day. The resort offers now transportation to/from the airport or anywhere else for that matter. They will recommend a cab that is $40 each way. Your best bet is to Uber, it's the most affordable way to get around. The entertainment is disappointing! I was there for 5 nights and there were 2 nights of entertainment during that time and they were not very entertaining. Room service is not included in your all-inclusive pricing. This is not the resort you want if you want a party atmosphere. This resort is mostly families and couples. It's very quiet and chill. They do play decent music at the pool but that's about a much of a party that you're going to get. If you want to save some money and just get R&R without a lot of frills, this works. If you want a different kind of experience, look elsewhere.

    Fabulous EXCEPT the first 24 hours

    We loved our trip with small kids. Although Kids zone was closed, the pools, food, drinks and beach outside the hotel were TRULY fabulous. There were even baby turtles hatching on two mornings!!! COVID safety protocols were good: temperature checks at breakfast and dinner and soap for hand washing everywhere. We would have given 5 stars except the check-in and first 24 hours were awful. After a long day of travel, we had to wait 1 hour to check in. We had booked “premium” so we were in a nice room with drinks and food BUT we were exhausted after a long day of travelling and eager to unpack and get to the pool … Then we were told that we would have to wait 1 hour longer for the room to be sanitized. Then when we finally got to the room it was awful. There was one bed—we booked a room with two beds. The room desperately needed renovation and did not smell good at all. We were given a roll out bed and were told to return tomorrow at noon to see if we can change rooms. I ended up having to sleep in the roll-out bed and I got all itchy. YUCK! Anyway, no one slept well. Then at noon we were told to return at 1pm. At 1pm we were told to return at 3pm. At 3pm we were told to return at 3.30pm when the “manager returns”. Finally, we DID get a room with two beds and it was LOVELY!! So we would STILL return to Barcelo next trip because we loved everything else but I hope that management will “retire” or renovate that room and that they better staff the check-in desks and that they kick the habit of telling customers to return over and over.
