    July visit

There were quite a few things that didn’t go well during our stay but I wanted to make it known that Enrique, Rey, and Romeo from the entertainment/activities group made our stay THE BEST! We had such a good time with them and they are one of the only reasons we would return to this resort! We also had the best bartender Cuauhtemoc who always made sure we had a drink in our hand! The facilities were not the cleanest, the food was average at best and we had money stolen from our room. The staff was pleasant and friendly the entire stay but I probably won’t book here in the future.

    Rude staff and unreasonable prices

Our experience at the Sunscape resort Akumel was indeed unpleasant 1) overcharged for the room rate (all inclusive ) 2) staff rude when I asked to use the hospitality room as our flight was 16 plus back to Geneva They asked me to wait quite awhile even though I demanded to see the general manager - it’s a tactic to hopefully make you walk away but I was adamant 3) food and beverages for 800 USD per night for two rooms was extortionate particularly given that Americans visiting from Chicago pay about 50 USD per night ( I heard this from some Americans staying there ) I would not recommend this hotel The only good thing was the beach staff did clear the sagassum seaweed which is prolific on all the beaches and we could use the beach

    A series of Unfortunate Events

This resort really needs some Updating in many areas, more than just a coat of paint. My husband and I booked a week long stay in this resort. The troubles began from the moment we arrived. We arrived at about 9:30 pm local time. We had booked a Sunclub pool view room. The Check-in Process was easy. They sat us down in a separate area. Maybe because of the time we arrived, we didn't get the complementary champagne the guests received, but that was not an issue for us. We arrived at our room and found water on the floor near the closet. When we opened the closet doors, the entire top shelf of the closet was flooded. The extra blanket was dry because it was in an enclosed plastic container. The extra pillow was soaked. We called down to the front desk and within a half an hour or so, someone had come to fix the problem. We explained to the staff that we had been traveling all day and wanted to get some food before the restaurants were closed. We asked them to have our room clean while we were out. About an hour later, we returned to our room, and the floor and closet were still wet. We tried calling the operator or the front desk to get the mess cleaned up. No one answered the phone. Soon, the phone would not even ring down to the front desk. My husband went to the front desk and again told them we needed the water cleaned, that we had tried calling, but the phone wasn't working properly. Another maintenance person showed up and tried fixing the problem again, but no one came to clean. Some time after midnight the floor was finally dry. The next day we explained the events of the previous evening to someone who claimed to be a manager. She pretty much said, Oh, sorry. Our house keeper did not make sure the room was fully stocked with coffee cups, toiletries, or even a sign to hang on the door that said Do Not Disturb. We figured because of Covid, they had removed some of the room features. There were times when our mini-bar was not stocked. Even after saying something to the front desk. On the second day of not having the minibar still not fully replenished, we finally went and asked for a manager. After the manager got involved then we finally got the minibar fully stocked. Food at our resort was not very good. The Buffet was the worst. The food was always cold unless you ordered something from the grill. However, the hamburgers from the grill were not freshly cooked. They showed fresh burgers, but they cooked them ahead of time and put them in a container on the back counter. When you ordered a burger, the pulled a pre-cooked one out and put it back on the grill and by the second time it was cooked, it was inedible. I do have to say we ordered food from room service and if you ordered when they were slow, you got it in a decent amount of time and it was hot and fresh. The burgers didn't appear to be reheated. The day before we left, we went to start packing our belongings only to find water dripping from the light fixtures in front of the closet. Not only was water dripping from light fixtures, it was dripping from a crack in the ceiling! We had maintenance out to our room again. They fixed the water a second time and this time because of the leaks we were made to change rooms. We were at a first floor swim out Sun Club pool room. We were moved to a second floor balcony room that was half the size of the room we had just left. The bed in the first floor room was perfect. Not too hard, not too soft. The bed for the second room was definitely a down grade. After all of the drama we had been through we just let it be. At check-out we explained what we had been through from our rooms, being moved and all (The previous day my husband spoke to a manager), and we asked for some sort of compensation for our problems. Their manager thought $50 was enough compensation. For this $50 discount, we practically had to fight with the front desk clerk to receive. Amstar tried to sell us a vacation plan, and based on my experience in this resort, I am very glad we rejected their offer.

    Family vacation

Just spent a week here with my wife and two daughters and had a very nice time. Overall the hotel is in good condition, needs some TLC like most places do especially after Covid with no revenue coming in. The hotel is right on the beach and has great snorkeling opportunities. Food as pretty typical for al all inclusive, and what made the stay the most enjoyable is the staff. Everyone was super friently, respectful and always went out of their way to make sure we had a nice time. If you're looking for a moderatly priced all inclusive I would highly recomment Sunscape! Great place for children and families!
