Overall great family vacation!
Wonderful family vacation with great service and food! We escaped the sargassum and went to Isla Mujeres twice while we were here - unbelievable beaches and water and NO SARGASSUM! The resort is wonderful - - the pools, the huts, the food, the service were all top notch! One of the best all-inclusive we have experienced! ROOMs: Comfortable and roomy. My only feedback is that the bathrooms could use a deep cleaning - ie., shower heads and around the toilet. One drawback is that they collect dishes from room service in the middle of the night so we heard clanging at 3am most nights. My husband got up and made them aware. Also, they were not consistent in providing enough towels each day. FOOD:: Our favorite servers were Jorge and Noe - - they were so nice and gave us a great experience! 1. World Cafe - unexpectedly delicious! So many choices. Loved the Mexican station which was fresh every day - - pasta station, also very freshly prepared - plancha station - hamburgers/fajitas, eggs in the morning - all so good! Great variety! Our grandkids could live here! 2. Himitsu Japanese restaurant with Teppanyaki tables - - quite delicious! Hard to get a reservation for the teppanyaki tables. 5 stars! (My favorite - highly recommend the Gyozas!) 3. Portofino - Italian - very tasty pasta and pizza. (My husband’s favorite) 4. El Patio - we had a frustrating experience here. Had to wait 1 hour (party of 8) and then another hour to get our food, and then another 1/2 hour to get our souffles (highly recommend) even though I requested them when we were seated as they take 40 minutes. Service took a LONG time making this not as enjoyable. Food was really good though. (They forgot to bring me my soup !) 5. Gaucho Grill - steakhouse. Very good service and food. Filets were not the best, but the other cuts of meat were better. (They forgot to bring me my soup AGAIN :() Recommendation: Crab cake 6. Olio - Mediterranean food. This was another one of my favorites - the beet salad was excellent! 7. Coco Cafe - loved being able to get ice cream every day! Overall, the variety of pools was great, especially if you have kids with you. This was key since the ocean was not appetizing due to the sargassum. We did water aerobics one day and Diana was so much fun! Loved her! We paid for Preferred, but didn’t find a whole lot of benefits from this. The Preferred lounge was not as crowded but the food was very average - hot food was NOT hot. If we had to do it again, we would not get preferred. Our view was great, but I would imagine an ocean front room would give a similar experience without paying for Preferred. Also, there is NO tracking of who is Preferred or not - - no bracelets and no enforcement.

Great for Families
Dreams Sands resort is a great place to take your family and our kids loved it. BEST: The spa. Phenomenal staff and was top notch and very contemporary. Perfect 10. Also, Oscar our concierge was amazing. Housekeeping was fantastic. GOOD: Food options and variety. Room service was good, but takes a while. Beach access is great, although there was a seaweed problem which was not the fault of the hotel. Cafe and ice cream, and the sports bar were all very good. NEEDS IMPROVEMENT: The preferred club took a while to get us checked in, and after a long trip in you just want to go to your room not sit in a lounge for an hour. The pools were good, but there were a lot of tiles at the bottom of the pool missing which tended to make it look like low quality and a lack of attention to detail. The "preferred" section of the pools and beach is too small and too packed. If everyone is preferred than nobody really is. It was supposed to be a more relaxed and exclusive part, and it was actually quite the opposite. The resort was very nice in parts, and very dated in others. There are two elevators which are way too small and not air conditioned. The resort needs a bit of a makeover as it is over 40 years old and in parts it really looks like it. OVERALL: We had a great experience and the staff, especially Oscar, were outstanding. Service at the pool was excellent as well. Drinks were good and very timely. Bring tip money, like all resorts. The kids absolutely loved it and want to go back, and because of that I gave it 5 stars. If you are not traveling with kids, I would pick a different resort as there were a lot of young kids and it is very much geared toward families. So if you are looking for a romantic getaway and don't like to be splashed at the pool and beach, then you should look elsewhere. But for families with young kids it was a great spot and we would go back.

Disappointed, need maintenance
Dreams Sands Cancun PROS: All of the staff we encountered were very friendly. The food at this resort was some of the best we've had in all of our trips to Mexico. The restraunts were also very accomoding with all of our food allergies (milk, shellfish, gluten and bananas/plantians). During this trip, my husband and myself traveled with our 8 year old and 5 year old daughters. They enjoyed the kids club and their kind staff. CONS: Upom check-in, we were offered to pay an additional $70 a day to get "preferred access". With that comes a special pool, additional options for dining and upgraded alcohol. We opted not do pay for preferred access. However, in choosing to not do that, there was VERY limited pool seating. Most of the seating were white umbrellas, which were designated for preferred access. Pool conditions have lots of missing tile and is a hazard. There was a lot of seating on the beach part though. Compared to other resorts we have stayed at, the room here was small and run down. The toilet didn't flush constantly. The water temperature changed consistently during showers. The shower door did not contain the water in the shower and required at least 2 towels to clean up the leakage on the floor. It would not keep a steady temperature and would get extremely hot or freezing cold without having touched the knob. The door to our balcony did not close correctly. When shut and locked, it would suck our curtains up to it. The shows were okay. I wouldn't say they were anything impressive compared to the entertainment/ shows we have seen at other resorts. They did not test their sound system so it was very very loud when sitting in the show area. Part of that could be that this property is very small and doesn't really have a designated entertainment area. It's usually by the pool and just isn't that much space. Also, the entertainment goes until 1am. The walls of the room are thin and you can hear people in their room next door as well as the entertainment until 1am. Having brought young kids with us who usually are ready to sleep by 9pm, this can be less than desirable. Drink service on the beach and at the pool were mostly by us going to the bar. During our 4 day stay, there was only 1 day where some came by and offered to take a drink order. At most places we have stayed, there has been someone that makes rounds. One thing that was also disappointing was the non-motorized sports access. We tried to go kayaking and were told we couldn't because of the wind (that wasn't hardly blowing), but we could rent jet skis. What was frustrating is we saw other people kayaking when we asked and we were told that they were from another resort or with a private company. I'm not sure why it was safe for them, but not us.

Disappointing Stay
The hotel stay was okay overall. We had our pros and cons. Our cons being the entire room was damp and had condensation everywhere. The curtain stuck to the door, the floor was wet, from the a/c dripping, the mini fridge was leaking water, our sheets were damp. When house keeping knocked on our door sheets were damp. When house keeping knocked on our door our son went to answer the door and slipped and fell. The rooms are very dated and therefore need many renovations. As you know, this hotel is titled “ All Inclusive” but many activities and areas such as pools and beach chairs where preferred guests, therefore non-preferred guest had little places to sit and little activities to do, I believe that the hotel should honor the title “ All Inclusive”. The main pool is missing a lot of tiles and more were loose. One of the couples we met told us one of there kids cut their foot. Also, the beach was full of sargassum. Which was unexpected because the pictures that the resort continually posted showed clear beaches and water. Which was the total opposite. The pros the staff! They were extremely kind, entertaining, and helpful. They were the real stars!! The speciality restaurants were good and the staff there were wonderful. Unfortunately, we would not recommend this resort to anyone.

Good resort with a great beach
A very nice resort, it is on the smaller size and older building but they have kept it up very well and the service is very good. The pool overlooks the ocean and when there is no seaweed, the beach is the best around. Great for families, would recommend for a vacay!
